Almelo is a municipality and a city in the eastern Netherlands. The main population centres in the town are Aadorp, Almelo, Mariaparochie, and Bornerbroek.
Almelo has about 72,000 inhabitants in the middle of the rolling countryside of Twente, with the industrial centres of Enschede and Hengelo as close neighbours but also with tourist towns like Ootmarsum, Delden and Markelo only a bicycle ride away. Almelo received city rights in 1394. Within the city limits lies the castle of the Counts of Almelo.
Located in the city centre is Huize Almelo, a castle that in its current form dates back to 1662 (This castle is not open to the public). There are mosaics which decorate the walls of the tunnel close to the railway station.
The city is also known for its local association football club Heracles Almelo, which plays in the Eerste divisie, the second highest football league in the Netherlands. The club uses the Erve Asito.

Walking in Twickel and Delden
Twickel is the name of the estate with a beautiful castle completely surrounded by a moat. Built in early Renaissance style. With a beautiful tower from 1551. The castle has been expanded many times.
The estate is 4400 acres and the house color is black with white shutters on the 148 farms. In the area zinj many Saxon farms sometimes still with the wells. The castle is still inhabited by a member of a noble family. Occasionally the garden and the castle are set up for visitors. The lands, forests are included in a foundation.
The estate has mainly a lot of forest. The felled trees are processed in Twickel's own sawmill. It is a large area with streams, woods, fields, meadows and bridges over the water. And as a bonus, every now and then a beautiful view of the castle.
Twickel itself has a parking lot where you can park for a small fee. The proceeds go to the foundation for maintenance.
Delden is a beautiful old town right next to Twickel. I park my car mostly behind hotel-restaurant de Zwaan also known as parking Noorderhagen. Parking there is free. You can easily take the pedestrian tunnel under the road.
Walk the Umfassungsweg from Twickel
The route is almost 10 kilometers. Well signposted. Without height differences. Although the pedestrian bridge over the main road is high. However, this can be circumvented by using the pedestrian tunnel over the bridge for cyclists and cars. The most famous and loved by many Umfassungsweg. No no no typo the name of the route is German. The route covers {umfasst} the heart of the estate.
Right after the pedestrian tunnel, the Umfassungsweg already begins. The signage is on wooden posts marked with the black letters UW. The route goes largely on unpaved paths, through the park landscape near the castle, through forest, across meadows, heathland and over the Esch, back via Delden. Some parts of the route are not suitable for wheelchairs and baby carriages. On a part of the route dogs are not allowed because of cattle and the fragile nature.
The first part goes over fairly wide dirt roads. Along the way there are regularly benches. You cross a narrow asphalt road again. Along the way there is a beautiful wooden picnic cart at a farm (Erve Bokdam). Here you can buy something to drink and a snack. But also a piece of cheese and other farm products. Only cash to pay. Then you walk through a gate and cross a meadow. Often there are cows and sheep. You cross a small asphalt road. And go over a large wooden bridge. If you go on this road, before the bridge, a little to the left, you come to museum farm Wendezoele. Here you get a glimpse of former life on a farm. After the bridge the path begins with wooden boards. Often you get the spontaneous feeling that you are walking in Africa. The path takes you slightly above the swampy ground so you keep your feet dry.
Then you walk through an open field, the Esch, with a wide view of the surroundings. The water tower of Delden comes closer and closer. Just before the larger road on the linden side is tavern Het Hoogspel. There is a lovely large terrace and a large playground. Nice for a well deserved snack and drink.
Via the high steel pedestrian bridge you walk into town of Delden.
The castle walk is 5 km and officially starts from the parking lot of Twickel.

Delden, Twickel Castle and estate with medieval watermill | The Netherlands #3
In this episode, I take to the tracks to visit Delden, a small town in the Dutch province of Overijssel. Delden has one of the tiniest medieval centres in the country and is bordered by a large estate named 'Twickel'. The 16th-century castle with its garden forms the centre of the 40 km2 estate, which is covered by woodland, farms, and streams. A medieval watermill used to produce linseed oil is still in operation.

Für Radfahrer und Wanderer gibt es auch beschriebene Routen, durch die sogenannte „Kulissenlandschaft“ aus Äckern und Alleen, Holzwällen und Waldstücken, die in früheren Jahrhunderten gestaltet wurde und einer wechselnden Theaterbühne gleicht.
Bauernhöfe, die besichtigt werden können, malerische Schlösschen, die von Landgütern und Parkanlagen umgeben sind und ein historischer Dampfzug, der durch die Landschaft rattert - Zeugen vergangener Tage gibt es in Twente in Hülle und Fülle. Neben den historischen Sehenswürdigkeiten gibt es aber auch moderne Städte mit einladenden Shoppingstraßen und Einkaufszentren. Die Stadt Enschede hat sich zu einer lebhaften Studentenstadt mit vielen Ausgehmöglichkeiten entwickelt. Auch in Hengelo verschmelzen Moderne und Historie sowie in Almelo mit dem eindrucksvollen Jagdhafen.

Atlas moet eerst eens naar onze video over de binnenstad van Hengelo(O) kijken. Het aanbod op cultureel en geestelijk gebied , het winkelaanbod en horeca is ontzettend groot. Het plein voor het gemeentehuis is aangepast en de Markt is heel aantrekkelijk voor jong en oud.

N742 Borne - Deldeneresch - Twickel - Delden (NL)
The N742 is a short provincial road in the east of the Netherlands, in the province of Overijssel, in the Twente region. The road is a short direct connecting route between the towns of Borne and Delden via Deldeneresch and the Twickel estate.
The video starts in the center of Borne, near the station. Via the Deldensestraat we leave Delden and we cross the A1 (Amsterdam - Osnabrück) and A35 (Zwolle - Münster) motorways via a viaduct.
On the southwest side of the motorway we enter Deldeneresch: a hamlet on the northern part of the moraine of Delden, which extends from the Twickel estate to the area south of the Twente Canal.
Just before Delden we pass long estate Twickel, a historic country estate that was first mentioned in the year 1347. We drive right past the vegetable garden, which is separated from the road by an old garden wall.
When entering Delden we pass the 38 meter high water tower from 1894 and the provincial road N346, which has been dug here. We leave Delden via the Molenstraat. The video ends at the roundabout that connects to the N740 to Neede, the N741 to Almelo and the N346 to Zutphen/Hengelo.

De N742 is een korte provinciale weg in het oosten van Nederland, in de provincie Overijssel, in de regio Twente. De weg is een korte directe verbindingsroute tussen de plaatsen Borne en Delden via Deldeneresch en landgoed Twickel.
De video begint in het centrum van Borne, vlakbij het station. Via de Deldensestraat verlaten we Delden en we kruisen de autosnelwegen A1 (Amsterdam - Osnabrück) en A35 (Zwolle - Münster) via een viaduct.
Aan de zuidwestzijde van de autosnelweg rijden we Deldeneresch binnen: een buurtschap op het noordelijk deel van de stuwwal van Delden, die zich uitstrekt vanaf het landgoed Twickel tot het gebied ten zuiden van het Twentekanaal.
Vlak voor Delden passeren we langgoed Twickel, een historische buitenplaats die voor het eerst vermeld werd in het jaar 1347. We rijden vlak langs de moestuin die van de weg gescheiden wordt door een oude tuinmuur.
Bij het binnenrijden van Delden passeren we de 38 meter hoge watertoren uit 1894 en de provinciale weg N346 die hier verdiept is aangelegd. Via de Molenstraat verlaten we Delden. De video eindigt op de rotonde die aansluiting geeft op de N740 naar Neede, de N741 naar Almelo en de N346 naar Zutphen/Hengelo.

Niet alleen voor de Nederlanders, maar vooral ook voor de vele honderdduizenden Chinese toeristen die jaarlijks deze typische toeristische attractie bezoeken. Dat het varen makkelijker lijkt dan het in werkelijkheid is, blijkt uit de video die ik hier geplaatst heb. Zelfs met hele kleine bootjes is het vaak lastig manoeuvreren en dus ook om botsingen te voorkomen. Velen denken dat een boot op dezelfde manier stuurt als een auto, maar dat is een grote vergissing. Enfin, beoordeel het zelf maar op deze video.
