Guinakit Fluvial Parade during the 16th Pakaradyan Festival of Malapatan, Sarangani Province

Music: Hawaii
Musician: ASHUTOSH

GUINAKIT SA SUGODA - 16TH PAKARADYAN FESTIVAL OF MALAPATAN

With the battle against COVID-19 still far from over, it is almost impossible to imagine festivals like Malapatan's Pakaradyan taking place, but the creativity, innovation, and persistence of Malapateños proved to be without limit. Today, I was part of a well-organized, uncrowded, but definitely successful Guinakit fluvial parade. There might have been very few people on site, but in their homes, people still participated it in by watching the whole event streamed live for audiences around the globe.

The fluvial parade of guinakits, or those colorful sea vessels that are adorned with flags and ornaments, signifying royalty, is part of the annual celebration of Pakaradyan Festival. This is usually a crowd drawer but with our current situation, only a limited number of people were invited. The activity commemorates the arrival of Islam in the archipelago.

Mayor Salway Sumbo, Vice Mayor Jean delos Santos, Councilor Eleanor Suib, and Municipal Tourism Officer Katherine Guttierez were on board the main guinakit that sailed around the municipal waters of Malapatan. The main boat was flanked by two other smaller guinakits and two speedboats of the PNP Maritime Group and Coast Guard.

I was told that usually every barangay decorates their own guinakit, so what I have witnessed is about a quarter of the usual number of colorful boats participating in the parade.

Malapatan's Pakaradyan festival was opened with a virtual program yesterday and will close in the same manner tomorrow. Most of the activities were also conducted online. They had cultural dance contest, TikTok challenge, quiz bowl, feature writing, documentary film, photography and painting. All of which can be viewed on the Facebook Page of the Malapatan Tourism Office .

The municipality of Malapatan has just proven that it is possible to celebrate a festival without compromising the safety of everyone.

DATU SAUDI AMPATUAN, MAGUINDANAO | MASJID DIMAUKOM OR PINK MOSQUE

The mosque includes extensive coloured glass in its facade, and displays other traditional elements such as the Panj Kāse (five concaved) design. It is named in popular culture as the 'Pink Mosque',[1] due to the usage of a considerable number of pink-colored tiles for its interior design.[2]

I Was Told to NOT Love CHINA... Yet Here I Am

I’ll be honest, before visiting China, I was warned by friends and family that I should NOT fall in love with this complicated country. As an Australian, I was cautioned about the pollution and advised to be wary of the Communist regime that governs China. Yet here I am, cruising along the canals of Suzhou on a gondola and finding myself falling in love with the enduring history and mesmerizing beauty of this ancient water town known as the Venice of the East. With its vast network of stone bridges crossing over rivers and canals, Suzhou sweeps me away to another time. As the sunset casts golden hues along historic Pingjiang Road, and I taste the sweet songpyeon cakes that locals gift me with smiles, my heart fills. How can I not love China when the people welcome me with such warmth and open arms? I was warned not to, but I am falling in love with China all the same. Join me on this journey through the Venice of the East to experience the magic for yourself. And then tell me again that I should not let this complicated yet captivating country capture my heart.

Aliwan Fiesta
Pasay City

Started in 2003, the Fiesta has grown to be a household name and a must-attend for those who love all things cultural. The aim of the Aliwan Festival is to promote the different cultures in the country, not just to its own people, but to tell the story to the rest of the world.

Aliwan Fiesta is an annual event that gathers different cultural festivals of the Philippines in the Star City Complex in Pasay City wherein contingents compete in dance parade and float competitions.

Organized by Manila Broadcasting Company (MBC) together with the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and the cities of Manila and Pasay, the event is dubbed as the Philippines' Grandest Fiesta, with prizes totaling P3 million (roughly US$70,000). Aliwan Fiesta, which began in 2003, aims to showcase the different Filipino cultures and heritage not only to the people in Metro Manila but also to the rest of the world.[1] The contingents, meanwhile, aim to promote their respective regions both economically and tourism-wise.[2] It was originally organized as a visual extravaganza for the Christmas season, but it has since been held during the summer months of either April or May.[3]
Aliwan is a Tagalog word for entertainment or amusement.
Aliwan Fiesta festivities are covered live on DZRH News Television annually.
