The 10 best things to do in Augsburg, Germany

The top tourist attractions in Augsburg - one of the oldest cities in Germany.

Read more here:

Augsburg was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2019, which is exactly the reason I put together this list of the best things to do in Augsburg. Most international tourists probably never heard of Augsburg before, but the city did play quite an important role in history. The famous Fugger clan had its headquarters here and (indirectly) ruled half of Europe during the Renaissance. As a free city, Augsburg also left its mark on art, especially silver and the goldsmith industry.

From lavish city palaces to magnificent cathedrals, there are just so many places to see in Augsburg.

A Quick Trip to Friedberg, Germany

In this video I share some of the highlights of my quick trip to Friedberg, Germany.

Friedberg is a small town in Germany 25-kilometers away from Frankfurt am Main.

I visited Friedberg during the middle of August and it was surprisingly quiet. There were hardly any tourists around and my girlfriend that I had the town to ourselves to explore.

After an hour there wasn't much else to do in Friedberg so we continued on with the rest of our Central European and German road trip.

Thank you for watching and be sure to subscribe for weekly travel videos!

Places to see in ( Augsburg - Germany ) Church of St Ulrich and St Afra

Places to see in ( Augsburg - Germany ) Church of St Ulrich and St Afra

The Basilica of SS. Ulrich and Afra Is a Catholic parish in Augsburg, in Bavaria, which originated from the Roman tomb of St. Afra, which was martyred in 304. The building is a great example of Gothic architecture in Germany; In its interior it conserves three enormous and very precious altars of Renaissance ends considered a masterpiece of the German sculpture of the period. Its high bell tower with an onion, which dominates the city of the south, served like prototype for the construction of numerous baroque towers of Bavaria.

In 1577 (officially) and 1643-1644 (virtually) the church, which was called the Benedictine abbey of Saints Ulrich and Afra was elevated to the rank of imperial abbey.

On October 18, 1777, a Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart organ concert was held. On May 4, 1782, Pope Pius VI celebrated Mass in Basilica. Secularized in 1802, it entered the possession of the State of Bavaria. In 1810 the church was elevated to parish and from July 4, 1937, declared by Pope Pius XI, a minor basilica and finally on May 4, 1987 was visited by Pope John Paul II.

Walking in AUGSBURG / Germany ????????- Central City and Fuggerei - 4K 60fps (UHD)

Augsburg is one of Germany’s oldest cities. Located in Bavaria, Augsburg is a 30 minute train ride from Munich.

We start our Augsburg tour at the Augsburger Dom and visit the cathedral for a look inside. Next we stroll through the Hofgarten which is a nice little oasis in the historical old town.

As we head South we enter the city centre visa the city market into the shopping streets. There in the centre we walk around a bit to see side streets before we go further South to the Augsburger Zeughaus and Königsplatz.

The tour continues towards the inner city going to the central Rathausplatz with renaissance buildings like Augsburg's Town Hall.

For the last part we walk out of the centre again North-East to the the Fuggerei. Driving in Germany: Bundesstraße B10 B28 Ulm to Dreieck Neu-Ulm

In this video you can drive along on the B10 and B28 through the city of Ulm in Southern Germany. This route through Ulm carries a lot of through traffic that comes from the A8 connecting to the A7 in the Southern direction. Depending on traffic it's often the shorter option.

Ulm is a typical university city with a young population and is located on the border of Baden-Württemberg - Bavaria. Neu-Ulm is located in Bavaria, while Ulm is in Baden-Württemberg. Ulm has about 130.000 inhabitants and was first established in the pre-medieval era. It's known for having the world's highest church tower at 162 meters and it's also the birthplace of famous Albert Einstein.

Augsburg (2023) is a city in Swabia, Bavaria (Schwaben, Bayern) in Germany (Deutschland). Augsburg was founded by the Romans in 15 BC and is one of the oldest cities of Germany. Augsburg has a medieval city centre (Altstadt) and has many urban districts around it. Between 1530 and 155 Augsburg played a crucial role in the reformation. Furthermore, the oldest social housing project was started here in 1530 (the Fuggerei) by Jakob Fugger. It is the third largest city of Bavaria after Munich and Nuremberg. The city of Augsburg has a population of 300,000 and 885,000 in its metropolitan area. Would you (could you?) live here for €1/year rent?: The Fuggerei in Augsburg, Germany.

The Fuggerei in Augsburg, Germany is the world's oldest social housing complex still in use.

It was founded in 1516 by Jakob Fugger the Younger and rent has always been one Rheinischer Gulden per year (or )equivalent to €0.88...88 cents!!! The conditions to live there remain the same as they were 500 years ago: three daily prayers — the Lord's Prayer, Hail Mary, and the Nicene Creed, one must have lived at least two years in Augsburg, be of the Catholic faith and have become indigent without debt.

Not mentioned is the ability to tolerate thousands of tourists tramping around your property (although the gates are locked at 10pm every night so not 24hrs of tourists.

From Augsburg to Landsberg am Lech - wonderful bike tour along the Romantic Road

The first part of our bike tour goes from Augsburg along the river Lech to Landsberg am Lech. It is part of the Romantic Road cycle path.

Our bike tour starts with a challenge: Augsburg central station is a major construction site, the elevators are out of service and we have to carry our bikes and luggage from the platform over the stairs to the outside. But soon we leave the hustle and bustle of the city and immerse ourselves in the nature of the Augsburg city forest. We ride past the ice canal, a canoe slalom course built in 1972 for the Munich Olympic games.

Then we reach the Lech barrage 23. The Lech is tamed from Füssen to Augsburg with a total of 23 barrages, which serve both to generate electricity and to protect against flooding. The reservoirs are a paradise for waterfowl.

Next, in the open field, we come across the modern Assisi Chapel, built in 2005/06. It is made entirely of copper, the reddish-brown color of which creates a warm and soothing atmosphere inside.

Then it's over with the tranquility! We meet the hiking chickens. These are happy free-range hens and hard-working organic egg producers. They stay behind us, cackling loudly.

And again we come across a barrage on the Lech, this time Lech barrage 19. There is a fish ladder here, with the help of which the fish can cross the otherwise insurmountable dam when spawning. Here, too, the reservoir is idyllically situated in nature and is lined with many yellow water lilies on its shore.

Now we tackle the steep ascent to the bluff of the Lech. We want to visit the ruins of castle Haltenberg, the only castle in the Lechrain between Donauwörth and Füssen. On the way there, an information board draws our attention to the fact that the first written mention of the Bavarian tribe took place around 550 AD for this area.
The castle was built around 1290 and was still used in the 18th century as a hunting lodge for the Dukes of Bavaria. Today only the mighty keep and the outer walls are preserved. Unfortunately, the keep is locked, but we are the only visitors and have the ruins to ourselves.

We continue along the Lech. Shortly before today's destination, Landsberg am Lech, we come across the baroque pilgrimage church of St. Leonhard near Kaufering. It is the destination of a pilgrimage that still takes place today, the Leonhardifahrt. Saint Leonhard is the patron saint of cattle and is highly revered here in rural areas. The chains around the church are also a symbol of this saint. The baroque interior is worth seeing.

Finally we reach Landsberg am Lech, our destination for today. We ride through the Bayertor down to the picturesque main square of the pretty town.
The main square has an unusual triangular shape. At its center is the fountain of Mary, erected around 1700, with a figure of Mary and four water-spouting dolphins. West of it is the old town hall with a magnificent rococo façade by Dominikus Zimmermann, the designer of the Wieskirche (we will visit the famous pilgrimage church of Wies later). In the southwest of the square is the former Ursuline monastery with the monastery church, also designed by Dominikus Zimmermann. In the northeast, the main square is bordered by the Lard Tower (also Beautiful Tower), a city tower from the 13th century.
Further north, the parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary dominates Landsberg's old town. The originally Gothic church building was redesigned in Baroque style around 1708. Inside, baroque splendor reigns supreme.
In front of the old town is the Lech weir, which now has four levels and was built in 1364 to protect against flooding. A wonderful sight is offered from the opposite bank of the Lech, when the colored historic houses are reflected in the light of the setting sun behind the Lech weir in the water.

The next stages of our bike tour will take us further along the Romantic Road to Schongau. You can find the video here:
