Best Thailand FLOATING MARKET | Bangkok’s most attractions 2024 | ???? Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

Damnoen Saduak is the largest floating market in thailand. Lots of tour companies sell tour packages here and to the neighboring Maeklong Railway Market. Both these attractions can be found in the neighboring province of Samut Songkhram, about a 2-hour drive from Bangkok.

As you hop onto the longtail boats at damnoen saduak largest floating market in thailand , you find yourself gliding down the narrow canals and small wooden houses on stilts - with enthusiastic vendors selling local Thai street food and various souvenirs to take home. It may seem commercialized and overcrowded sometimes, but tourists and vendors bring noise and color to the area.

Come along for the ride, as we explore this authentic Damnoen Saduak floating market that has been a part of Bangkok's waterways for centuries.

This popular Damnoen saduak floating market tour is a uniquely Thai experience, and although it may sometimes feel like a tourist trap, it does at-least guarantee a floating market experience.

Floating Market Bangkok Thailand - Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

In the past, daily commerce in Thailand was conducted mostly along rivers and canals (or khlongs in Thai). Bangkok’s water network was busy and served as the principal means of communication causing Bangkok to be called as the Venice of the East by early European visitors.

Damnoen saduak Floating Market in Ratchaburi is one of the most popular floating markets in Thailand. Every day many Thai and foreign tourists travel here to shop, eat, and absorb the atmosphere of Thailand water markets that have been like this for over a 100 years. Klong Damnoen Saduak Damnoen Saduak is the straightest and longest canal in Thailand. The canal was built on royal initiative as King Rama IV of Thailand wanted to link the Mae Klong River with Chinese river ways to support transportation and trade. It took over 2 years to dig, and was eventually finished under the reign of his successor King Rama V. The canal is 32 kilometers long and has more than 200 branches. Damnoen Saduak Floating Market's popularity grew to new heights in 1971-1973 when the river was full of farmers on their boats selling their wares. And that is the way trade is performed in this area until todays.

One of the most popular floating market in Thailand, Damnoen Saduak, is a great day trip from Bangkok. It’s located about 100 kilometers from Bangkok to the west. It’s the first floating market that the Thai government built up to service the tourist industry in order to benefit the local community.

Damnoen Saduak is the market that you’ll see in the pictures of all the travel agencies, and the only one where there are still dozens and dozens of boats selling different products, which nowadays are mostly tourist souvenirs, although some still sell fruit and even freshly cooked food.

On the banks surrounding the canals you will see many shops, cafes and small restaurants for visitors.

It is very touristy, but it is a fun visit for a couple of hours. Visitors can take a boat to sail along its canals and get an idea of what these markets were like in the past.

Quite a few films have been filmed in this floating market, such as ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’ of the James Bond saga, or Nicolas Cage’s ‘Bangkok Dangerous’.

The original market area is located on the opposite side of the canal with a museum.
