TEXAS TO OKLAHOMA: A Roadtrip on ROUTE 66 through Elk City to Oklahoma City

Join the road trip through three states in the South Central region of the USA: through New Mexico, Texas, all the way to vibrant and buzzing Oklahoma City.
There is the saying that the most promising words ever written on the maps of human knowledge are terra incognita, unknown territory. Traversing from New Mexico to the wide Plains of Texas for me was exactly this: unknown territory, the promise, of a new adventure, of places that I had never visited before.

Here are the Highlights of my roadtrip from New Mexico to Texas and Oklahoma:
00:00 Leaving the mountains of New Mexico heading direction Texas, you will encounter a lot of beautiful wide plains.

01:09 Stop at the village of Cimarron. The town has the motto „Where the West is still wild“ and you can do a self guided historic walk if you bring a bit of time. The historic sites like the Old Mill Museum or Old Jail are dating back to the mid 1800s. Make sure to not miss out on visiting ST. James Hotel: The 43 rooms were witnesses to at least 26 murders during Cimarron's wilder days. Clay Allison, Black Jack Ketchum and Buffalo Bill Cody have all left their mark - you can still see numerous bullet holes in the tin ceiling of the main dining room.
04:09 Cross into Texas in style
04:43 Find a motel in the middle of nowhere and drive through the local towns - this part of the fun of a roadtrip!
07:49 Visit Elk city, drive on the hirstoric Route 66 and visit the National Route 66 & Transportation Museum to experience the history and heritage of Route 66. The Elk City Museum Complex consists of 5 unique museums. Get a glimpse into the lives of early settlers in Western Oklahoma at the Old City museum and the Farm and Ranch Museum and visit the replicas of an schoolhouse, opera house, doctor’s office and chapel, and experience the pioneer history.
09:29 Stop for a night and some sighseeing in Oklahoma City
10:44 A must visit in Oklahoma City is the Myriad Botanical Gardens & Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory. The park will transport you to a lush paradise. Open to the public since 1988, the Myriad Botanical Gardens have continually provided a gathering place and oasis from the busy city life.
11:44 Don't miss out on Oklahoma City's buzzing art scene! Visit the Oklahoma City Museum of Art and enjoy the permanent collection that is presented in a quite joyful way: artworks by contemporary artists like Kehinde Wiley face icons like Renoir. But I was most fascinated by the exhibition of Dale Chihuly. The Museum’s collection represents over three decades of Chihuly’s work, is one of the largest collections of Chihuly glass in the world, and heralds this brilliant luminist as one of the most important artist working in glass.
12:34 Oklahoma City is a good place to take care of your vehicles if you do a longer roadtrip. It's big enough to have some really good workshops - so I took my chance and changed my rear tire.

AMARILLO: What I Saw SHOCKED Me - Much Of The City's Center Is In Decay

We visited Amarillo, Texas. There are numerous fun things to do and see in the city, including Cadillac Ranch, Palo Duro Canyon and the Big Texan Restaurant. The area surrounding downtown, however, is in a shocking state of decay. I wouldn't have believed I hadn't seen it for myself.

Day 162: TX Winter is Coming

Skeletor10, Ai-Chan, and I awake in Dalhart in the far Northwest corner of the Texas panhandle to a sight none of us wanted to see - Snow! We overcome the shock, dragging our feet out the door of the hotel and into the cold white powder covering the desert landscape. Despite our misgivings we actually have a pretty good time of it, enjoying the sudden change of scenery and several good geocache finds. On our run south, trying to break free of the snow, we find ourselves in the small town of Vegas, which is filled with murals, statues, and other interesting pieces of historic dating back to its glory days along the infamous route 66. By the time we reach Hereford we manage to put the last traces of snow in our rearview mirror, enjoying the victory as we make our way from one county courthouse and arrow statue to the next. Our daylight comes to a swift end by the time we reach the city of Tulia, bidding goodbye to another sunset over the plains of Texas.

Annual Parade - 2019 XIT Rodeo & Reunion (Saturday)

The XIT Rodeo & Reunion Committee organizes one of the largest annual parades in the Texas Plains Region. The parade route is mostly in the historic residential district in Dalhart, Texas where parking is limited and many of the people who go to watch often have to park blocks away from the route #Parade #XITRodeo #DalhartTX #AmericanHeartlands

There was nothing in the history of the West quite like the XIT Ranch. In the 1880s, it was the largest ranch in the world under the fence, and it sprawled across the Texas Panhandle up from the old Yellow House headquarters near what is now Lubbock, northward to the Oklahoma Panhandle in a crazy strip that was toughly thirty miles wide occupying ten counties in Texas. At one time, the ranch ran over 150,000 cattle.
