WESTERN SAHARA to MAURITANIA: from Dakhla to the most dangerous border of the world // EPS.2
Three months after we drove the motorcycles to Dakhla, we continued our journey in the desert of Morocco/Western Sahara. We had heard many nightmare stories about the border of Mauritania ahead (it was supposed to be the most dangerous border in the world with a lawless No Man's land with landmines and small sandy tracks). But our first obstacle when returning to Dakhla was to find a motorcycle garage for changing the tires of our bikes before we could enjoy the oasis of Dakhla for Kitesurfing. A little break before we really started our adventure ride south through the desert on the westcoast of Africa. On the way through Morocco/ Western Sahara we came across many checkpoints, beautiful dunes and amazing landscapes before we finally hit the border of Mauritania...

Travel Guide: Why Dakhla is a paradise for water sports... and so much more!
An average year round temperature of 68°F to 77°F (20°C-25°C). Welcome to Dakhla! The ideal spot for those who like to disconnect from the world. The magnificent lagoon of Oued Eddahab, also known as Rio de Oro, and its turquoise waters will make you forget the dullness of everyday life. But Dakhla is also a paradise for thrill seekers: kite surfing, surfing, windsurfing, the coast is world famous for its favorable winds and mysterious places like the Dragon Island or the White Dune. Fishing is also a sport not to be overlooked: there are multiple varieties of fish that we catch in our nets! And don't forget the oysters and the lobster... Bon Appétit!

Dakhla Day Tour
Dakhla is in Western Sahara, a sparsely-populated area of mostly desert on the northwest coast of Africa. A former Spanish colony, it was annexed by Morocco in 1975. Since then it has been the subject of a long-running territorial dispute between Morocco and its indigenous Saharawi people.
We only stayed in Dakhla for 3 days on our way to Mauritania and we decided to join a group tour arranged by our hostel because we like the convenience :)

Did we feel safe in Dakhla?
Yes. At least we can say this based on our experience. We have walked around Dakhla by ourselves day and night and felt safe. We didn't see beggars on the street nor were we harassed in the markets when trying to buy things.
Did we enjoy the tour?
Definitely!
We only had to share with 2 Moroccans plus the driver and we got along really well. We could have skipped the Ostrich Farm but the rest were fun and can highly recommend.

Dakhla, the pearl of southern Morocco
Located in the south of Morocco, Dakhla is a small part of paradise, lost between the waters of the Atlantic and the sands of the Sahara. It gives you a complete change of scenery. Kilometres of beaches expand from one side of the town to the other : an opportunity to relax, and indulge in all kinds of water activities.
These shores are one of the most beautiful ones in Morocco. These pearls are an absolute haven of peace ; an ideal place to bask in the 25-degree sun all year round.
In the surroundings, the PK25 and Foum El Bouir beaches are particularly famous. While PK25 is a perfect place for relaxation, where to swim quietly in the calm and crystalline waters of the lagoon, the atmosphere of Foum El Bouir is more lively.
Being the perfect places for sliding sports : Surfers, kitesurfers and windsurfers, whether amateurs or professionals, meet here to experience thrilling challenges with waves and winds. « Pointe de Dragon » is another internationally renowned spot : waves are impressive and the most famous surfers have come in droves to these spectacular tubes that run for hundreds of metres.
Leading to sub-Saharan Africa, Dakhla is a gateway to a never-ending array of thrilling and exciting activities !
