Crotone is a port city in Calabria, southern Italy. The monumental Castello di Carlo V is a 9th-century fortress that was modified in the 1500s. The National Archaeological Museum houses items, including a gold tiara, unearthed at the ancient Temple of Hera Lacinia in the nearby Capo Colonna Archaeological Park. Farther south is the Capo Rizzuto Marine Protected Area, with seagrass forests, barracudas and starfish.
Croton's oekist (founder) was Myscellus who came from the city of Rhypes in Achaea in the northern Peloponnese. He established the city in c. 710 BC and it soon became one of the most flourishing cities of Magna Graecia with a population between 50,000 and 80,000 around 500 BC. Its inhabitants were famous for their physical strength and for the simple sobriety of their lives. From 588 BC onwards, Croton produced many generations of victors in the Olympics and the other Panhellenic Games, the most famous of whom was Milo of Croton. According to Herodotus (3.131), the physicians of Croton were considered the foremost among the Greeks, and among them Democedes, son of Calliphon, was the most prominent in the 6th century BC. Accordingly, he traveled around Greece and ended up working in the court of Polycrates, tyrant of Samos.
Crotone Airport (Sant'Anna Airport) is served by Italiatour.it and other charter airlines. Crotone also has a railway station, although much of the tourism traffic is served by the Salerno-Reggio Calabria highway and the National Road (called 106 Ionica) leading all the Jonic (eastern) coast from Taranto to Reggio Calabria. In recent time Crotone Port has been used by visitors on yacht charter cruising vacations. Crotone hosts a national archaeological museum, a municipal museum, a municipal art gallery, and a provincial museum of contemporary art, as well as the Antiquarium di Torre Nao.

The Cathedral, originally from the 9th to 11th centuries, but largely rebuilt. It has a neo-classical façade, while the interior has a nave with two aisles, with Baroque decorations. Noteworthy are a baptismal font (12th century) and the Madonna di Capo Colonna, the icon of the Black Madonna which, according to the tradition, was brought from East in the first years of the Christian era.
The 16th-century Castle of Charles V. It houses the Town Museum, with findings excavated in the ancient site of Kroton. Notable are also the remnants of the walls, of the same century, and of various watchtowers.
The ancient castle built on an island, with accessibility on foot limited to a narrow strip of land, is referred to as Le Castella.

A dispetto del nome, Isola di Capo Rizzuto non è una terra che emerge dalle acque, ma un comune calabrese in provincia di Crotone.
Nonostante la bellezza, le gemme che racchiude e spiagge da favola, questa località è ancora sconosciuta al turismo di massa. Per fortuna, mi verrebbe da dire.
L’Area Naturale Marina protetta di Capo Rizzuto, gioiello naturalistico incontaminato, il Castello Aragonese di Le Castella,
raccontano di un passato antichissimo e lasciano stupefatti i turisti in visita che scoprono gemme inaspettate nel mare di Calabria.
Non solo cultura e storia, ma anche una gastronomia fortemente radicata al territorio, con piatti tipici famosi e apprezzati a livello internazionale, e un ricco calendario di eventi. Ruolo molto importante, infine, è giocato dal mare Jonio: pulito, dai colori affascinanti e bello da togliere il fiato. Scopriamo insieme quali sono le spiagge che meritano di essere frequentate.
Per non mettere in secondo piano le spiagge con sabbie color oro bagnate da un mare turchese e contornata da scogliere impervie.
Si tratta di una bellissima spiaggia ampia di sabbia fine e straordinariamente rossa, bagnata da un mare turchese e cristallino, con fondali molto bassi e ricchi di anfratti, nei quali si nascondono una miriade di pesci che rendono queste acque ideali anche per gli amanti dello snorkeling.
Di fronte alla spiaggia si staglia poi lo splendido castello del XV secolo, che si erge su una lingua di terra collegata alla spiaggia da una sottile striscia sabbiosa percorribile solo con la bassa marea.
E' un angolo di paradiso che non teme il confronto con le più blasonate spiagge caraibiche.
Gran parte dell'ambiente che circonda la spiaggia di Le Castella è stato purtroppo sfruttato in modo esagerato.

Crotone Italy
Crotone is a port city in Calabria, southern Italy. Founded c. 710 BC as the Achaean colony of Kroton (Ancient Greek: Κρότων or Ϙρότων; Latin: Crotona), it was known as Cotrone from the Middle Ages until 1928, when its name was changed to the current one. In 1992, it became the capital of the newly established Province of Crotone. As of August 2018, its population was about 65,000.

Soverato Catanzaro Baia dell'Ippocampo - Calabria Italia
Soverato, nota anche come la Perla dello Ionio, in provincia di Catanzaro, è una delle mete turistiche più rinomate della Calabria.
La città è suddivisa in tre zone urbane: la prima sulla costa la seconda in collina e la terza quella più alta è Soverato Superiore.
Nella zona vecchia molto suggestivi sono i resti dell'antico borgo medievale, distrutto nel 1783 da un forte terremoto.
La vera ricchezza di Soverato è certamente la sua costa, fatta di arenili di sabbia bianca e dal mare cristallino.
Per la presenza costante di vari esemplari di Hippocampus, a Soverato c’è un tratto di mare denominato Baia dell’Ippocampo, zona protetta inserita nel Parco Marino Regionale.
Vero elemento di interesse naturalistico è il Giardino Botanico Santicelli, posto su un'altura che si affaccia sul golfo di Squillace.
Lungo la costa si scorge la leggendaria Torre di Carlo V, detta anche Turrazzo, una torre di avvistamento costruita fra il XVI e il XVII secolo con lo scopo di difendere la città dagli attacchi dei Pirati e dei Turchi.
Soverato, also known as the Pearl of the Ionian, in the province of Catanzaro, is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Calabria.
The city is divided into three urban areas: the first on the coast, the second in the hills and the third the highest one is Soverato Superiore.
In the old area, the remains of the ancient medieval village are very suggestive, destroyed in 1783 by a strong earthquake.
The real wealth of Soverato is certainly its coast, made of white sandy beaches and crystalline sea.
Due to the constant presence of various specimens of Hippocampus, in Soverato there is a stretch of sea called the Hippocampus Bay, a protected area included in the Regional Marine Park.
A true element of naturalistic interest is the Santicelli Botanical Garden, located on a hill overlooking the Gulf of Squillace.
Along the coast you can see the legendary Tower of Charles V, also known as Turrazzo, a watchtower built between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries with the aim of defending the city from attacks by pirates and Turks.

The famous fortification, probably of Magna Graecia origin, stretched out on a small peninsula by the sea. A swell in the 70s of the 20th century discovered a large wall about 40 m long under the castle foundations on the back of the east side, whose construction technique, with limestone blocks and small checkered stone panels, is very reminiscent of near that used in a Hellenistic wall of Velia: its dating fluctuates between the second half of the IVth and the beginning of the IIIrd BC This suggests an ancient breakwater wall or what remains of a phrourion crotoniate, that is, a military outpost and natural port for boats. The fortress had various architectural changes over the centuries, depending on the rulers and defensive needs. Very important are the monumental quarries of blocks and drums of Greek columns (VI-III century BC) on the Punta Cannone and in the area of the port. From these were presumably extracted the drums of the columns of the Temple of Hera Lacinia, located on the promontory of Capo Colonna.
