Curepipe Mauritius (It didn't rain) Glorious sunshine day

We visit Curepipe on a glorious sunny day. What a place. From the historic to the hustle and bustle of a huge city. Only recently out of the red zone, the city is coming back with a bang.

The market is an impressive art deco structure where we started our tour of Curepipe, with tons of fresh produce inside, including chicken, lamb, beef and a host of different types of fish, from tuna to snapper.

We walked the street in what can only be described as the heart Curepipe and discovered a type of shopping mall call arcades. one even had a garden in it. On one of the back streets, we found a grill. They were cooking chicken and lamb, it smelt so good we bought some lamb.

We then visited the royal college, which is an imposing structure, as if it had been plucked from the hallowed universities of Cambridge or Oxford. In front of the college is the National Heritage site of the missing soldier from world war one, with Tommy and Paulu.

At the main crossroads of Curepipe we saw the iconic MCB building and the Arcade across the street that looks even older but is just designed to look that way. Inside the Arcade is a great cake shop, Chelseas Cup and Cake and a very trendy bar.

A short walk down the road leads you to St Theresa's Church, a magnificent old building which is currently under renovation. Across the road from the church is the Curepipe Municipality building complex which houses quite a few National Monuments in the form of statues. One is of Paul and Virginie in bronze, copied exactly from the original by D'Epinay in marble. Another is of Abbot Caile who was the first person to chart the stars of the Southern Hemisphere. He also calculated the exact location of Mauritius and produced a detailed map.

Next to the Municipality is the Carnegie Library and the Town Hall which are both National Heritage sites. The Carnegie Library was built with funds donated by Carnegie and filled with books donated by many Mauritian collectors. The Town Hall is undergoing extensive renovation but interestingly was originally built in Moka and moved to Curepipe.

We then went into Lakesview Mall which is a food court overlooking a beautiful waterway. Curepipe is known as The City of Lights and this is because it had electricity back in 1865! Many people had moved here from Port Louis during the malaria outbreaks and the arrival of the train led to even further development. Canals were built in the 1930s which greatly reduced the humidity and swampiness, but couldn't halt the extraordinary amount of rain.

At the end of our tour of Curepipe, we visit the old market which will be transformed shortly as the trains are returning in the form of a metro. We enjoy a dhol puri from one of the many food vendors near the bus station.

Mauritius Curepipe City

Curepipe City is the second largest city in Mauritius and this was filmed in 2012. It is interesting to see the changes filmed recently by the Mauritian Vloggers. It's always a busy, popular shopping centre with historic colonial buildings. The Curepipe Botanic Gardens are not to far from the Curepipe CBD. The volcanic crater of Trou aux Cerfs has spectacular views and is a short drive from the CBD. Many thanks to the Tour Guide Nohar Ramsaran for his expert commentary. Curepipe is always cooler in summer than the coastal regions.

Visit the second largest garden in Mauritius | SSR Botanical Garden, Curepipe

Curepipe Botanic Gardens (or SSR Botanical Garden of Curepipe) is located in Route des Jardins, Curepipe, is the second largest botanical garden in Mauritius.

The entrance to the garden is free.

It is also known as the SSR Botanical Garden of Curepipe, named after the former prime minister and great political persona of Mauritius Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam in the 1980s.

It covers an area of roughly 27 acres, and is situated about 2 km to the west of the Curepipe town centre in Route des Jardins. The main entrance is on Botanical Garden Street at Les Casernes, and a secondary entrance is located at Camp-Caval.

The purpose of this botanical garden was to cultivate different species of plants that were otherwise not acclimatising to the less temperate parts of the island. Unlike other places, Curepipe had a colder climate than the coastal areas of Mauritius. Its counter-part the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden didn’t have the appropriate grounds for planting certain species, and thus, they were transferred to the Curepipe branch.

Initially, a wide range of exotic plant species was introduced in the garden and also in Mauritius, namely Rhododendrons, Azaleas and Camphors along with numerous exotic fruit trees. Currently, some of the rarest and endangered plant species that are endemic to Mauritius are also growing slowly.

To host community events, there is a gazebo in the garden as well. It has a Victorian-inspired architectural design and is raised from the ground with the help of its wooden floor. It is constructed in such a way that it is acoustically well balanced, making it easier for the audience to enjoy the programme loud and clear.

This is definitely a must visit place in Mauritius
