HUECAS! Best Restaurants in CUENCA Ecuador on a Budget
Some of the best restaurants in Cuenca Ecuador are huecas. These little hole in the wall restaurants serve traditional Ecuadorian food, open after 5pm and have killer aji.
Here are 7 huecas in Cuenca that you'll want to try (addresses below!).
At the Los Sandwiches de Doña Piedad you can try a pernil sandwich. It's made similar to hornado where it's a slow roasted pork. It comes in a simple white bun and of course you have some aji and coco drink for $2.60.
One pernil sandwich isn't enough so go to El Vecino, which means neighbour. This family run spot has been around for generations. The aji they use is different. It's a cream base. This one is $1.50. It's really good. Worth trying both.
Huecas are all about eating traditional food in Cuenca. But did you know hot dogs are considered traditional and super popular in Cuenca. La Tropical been around for 53 years and I'm actually at the very first location, which is called Dispensa Tropical.
They're only a dollar and they do it a little bit differently. It's actually a chicken hot dog cooked on like a rotisserie served with mayonnaise and pickled onions.
One of the most popular street vendors in the city is now one of the best restaurants in Cuenca, Las Piezas del Maño. This guy is known all over the city, everyone knows him and that's because he first started as a food truck outside of the university. And he's famous for his hot dogs, for two reasons, one, because they always have a second meaning.
In fact, his name means Maño’s Wieners and how he names his hot dogs: big weiner, little weiner etc.
So the hot dogs are actually steamed alongside the onion and tomato and then topped with mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup. This and a coco drink is $1.50.
The last hot dog restaurant has an English name “My Favorite Dog”, but everyone here calls it La Ventanita. It's a steamed hot dog with shredded cured meat on top of it along with onion, mustard, mayonnaise. Ecuadorians don't like to stand in line, but they do here.
Soda Margarita is known for two things: Salchipapas and secos. Secos have quite an interesting story, and it comes from the fact that at lunch in Ecuador, you have almuerzo, it’s a set lunch. And there were two different courses, but in Guayaquil it was very hot. And so when the British came here, they didn't want to have a hot soup to start their lunch.
They only wanted the second course. Not knowing Spanish they just kept saying second but Ecuadorians not knowing English thought...didn't know what they And thought they were saying seco. And so this dish is far from dry, which is what seco means.
Pinchos in northern Ecuador are called chuzos here. Chuzos Alexandrita is in southern Cuenca. The only restaurant that is not in Cuenca's historic district. I wanted to try molleja or chicken heart. You can also get chicken feet called pata, chicken neck, choclo con queso, paisa etc.

Let's beat the Summer Heat!
Camp Pulong Gubat Wave Pool Resort is located in Cuenca, Batangas (Philippines). The place was nice and the staff was very accommodating but their slide (the highest one) was only up to 8 in the evening. We really enjoyed our summer outing and the place was highly recommended. Camp Pulong Gubat celebrated their 2nd Year Anniversary last 28th of April. The Fire dance show was amazing and the Live band rocks.

MT. MACULOT: HIKING GUIDE AND ITINERARY | 2020 VLOG
I'll place Mt. Maculot as the second must climbed mountain in Batangas because of different factors. Can also be one of the best options for day hike because of its minor trail type, terrains that are covered with trees and surrounded by grass and shrubs, the air is fresh, cool ambiance and a perfect location for a stunning shot with the world famous and most active Taal Volcano on the background. In addition, the Rockies is the best and famous part of Maculot. #81ProvincesPh #Vlogging
THE TRAILS: From the jump off to the campsite, the trail is ascending and got 3 rating out of 9 in terms of its difficulty, but never under estimate it. The trail is well established, clean and covered with trees and shrubs on the sides. The ambiance is cool and the air is fresh. Buko juice and halo-halo stores are present in almost every 10 meters on the trail, perfect to replenish the lost body fluids.
SPECIAL FEATURE, THE ROCKIES: From the camp site, the trail is well-established but has descent and an assault to the Rockies. Trail type is more technical, because hikers would need to do scrambling to reach the summit. This part has different views, the actual Rockies where hikers a have a death defying pose or the side where Mt. Taal is a perfect backdrop. On either side, the sea breeze is cool and relaxing.
THE CAMPSITE: Its campsite has a wide and open area which can handle more than 20 tents, depending on the sizes. The area is clean, well maintained and has cottages. The breeze is cold especially at night, so bringing a jacket is highly recommended. The Price is Gold store is also available. ALWAYS REMEMBER LEAVE NO TRACE. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR TRASH AT THE CAMPSITE.
MT. MACULOT TRAVERSE: A traverse is another journey. Hikers need to trek to the summit that is 930 MASL; it took us two hours to reach the summit from the camp site but was certainly full of fun. The trails and terrains are pretty much the same, they are well established. The sea breeze is still cool and has fresher air because everything is surrounded with greens with orchids hanging on the branches. Also, the area is abundant with variety of birds that are singing lullabies. On the summit, there's a big picture of a beautiful #Batangas and the nearby provinces. The crystal blue water mirrors the spectacular image of the sky. THE ROPED SEGMENT: More than an hour from the summit is the challenging roped segment where the trails are steep and cliff hanging.
SETTING YOUR EXPECTATIONS: Mt. Maculot doesn’t have water source on the camp site or on the summit. Everyone needs to bring your own food and water. There’s a store at the camp site, but the price is gold. You can buy supplies at Cuenca Market. For overnight, Insect repellent lotion is recommended because the area is covered with grass and weeds. For the traverse, I would suggest to wear a comfortable outfit, especially on the roped segment. Guides and entrance fees are to be collected.
HOW TO GET HERE: In Jam Liner terminal Buendia, we rode in a bus bound for Batangas and alighted in Cuenca. Travel time was 2-3 hours. Then, rode in a tricycle to the registration and to the jump off (tricycle drivers already knew the place).

Traditional Spiritual Cleansing in Cuenca Ecuador
We decided to try a traditional Andean spiritual cleansing in Cuenca Ecuador, known as a limpia. This all went down at the Mercado 10 de Agosto (August 10 Market) in the town of Cuenca, Ecuador. This traditional healing involves an egg being rubbed around the body to obtain a diagnosis, being beaten with herbs, and being spit at. What a cultural experience! It is meant to rid everything terrible from the body.
This woman performing the spiritual cleansing had a massive following, as customers were waiting for about an hour specifically for her, while other cleansers were available. She charges $3 for this spiritual cleansing at the Cuenca market and the process lasted about eight minutes.
