10 Best place to visit in Crockett United States

Day Trip to Crockett ???? (FULL EPISODE) S10 E3

Behind the towering green veil of the Pine Curtain, time slows down in the Hub of Houston County, and if you take the time to slow down too...well I think you'll like what you find.

You’re probably wondering how this town is connected to the Texas hero, Davy Crockett, and this spring in Brewer Park is the place to find out. Back in the 1800s, Davy stopped in town to visit a friend, and on his way he stopped at this very spring to get a drink of water. Historic! And thus the town was renamed…

Visit this site that was once a bustling village of native Caddo Indians, living in little grass houses just like the one recreated by Caddo Indians. Fun Fact: the word “Texas” came from the Caddo Indians word for “welcome.”

This mission reconstructed by the CCC is a loose representation of the Mission San Francisco de Tejas, the first Spanish mission in Texas established in 1690. The original mission was only in the area for 4 years before it was relocated to San Antonio as Mission Esperada.

The best place to dive into the music history of this town is at this little joint where Lightning Hopkins used to play for tips before he struck it big as a blues artist. Stop in for a show, and if you’re lucky, you’ll get to see owner Pip Gillette do some pickin’ on the banjo and play the rib bones.

In town, you’ll find the ruins of Mary Allen College, the first women’s college for African Americans in the state. It’s a cool sight, and an even cooler significant moment in Texas history.

At first glance, this place doesn’t look like much, but it’s a local favorite. Owned by the mayor, this cafe is decorated with tons of (you guessed it!) Moose heads and serves up a mean patty melt. Don’t forget to order the fried pickles, too!

For a down home atmosphere and a family-potluck-style buffet, look no further than Rosemary’s. Each day is a new special, but you can bet it’ll be finger-licking — especially when you wash it down with a homemade pie for dessert!

This hiking trail might just be one of the most significant in Texas. Also called the “King’s Highway” or the “Old San Antonio Road” this is the pathway taken by all the Texas heroes (we’re talking Austin, Bowie, Crockett) that once led from Louisiana to Mexico. This is the only remaining section and it’s a pretty awesome hike!

One of the biggest nearby attractions is the Davy Crockett National Forest, which is 160,000 acres of incredibly beautiful East Texas nature. Spend some time wandering through the towering pines or paddling the Four C National Recreational Trail.

Day Trip to Brownsville ???? (FULL EPISODE) S10 E6

At the very tip of Texas, where just a river separates two countries, a vibrant Tex-Mexified adventure awaits. Time for some South Texas-trippin'!

Housed in a 1920s train depot, this museum tells the story of the Mexican-American War and how it lead to Brownsville’s creation. The exhibits show that Brownsville is a place where the histories of Mexico and Texas mix together.

You can visit the Palo Alto battlefield to learn about the first battle in the Mexican-American War. Tour the battlefield, get a bird’s eye view from the observation deck and even see historic cannons and field guns from the battle.

If you’re expecting brisket and sausage at this barbecue joint, then you’re thinking of the wrong kind of ‘cue. Sure, it’s still smoked meat, but Vera’s is one of the few spots left in the states serving up traditional Mexican barbacoa — a full cow head cooked in a burning pit in the ground. Don’t let the words “cow head” scare you off, it’s mighty tasty in a taco.

When you’re in Brownsville, just prepare for tacos galore. This local favorite is opened late and tacos are about a dollar a piece. The choices are simple: choose between 6 or 8 street tacos and choose your meat. Then prepare for a beautiful presentation of tacos piled high with avocado, onions and cilantro, with plenty of hot sauce choices.

The Sable Palm Sanctuary is an old sugar cane plantation right in the middle of a lush native palm forest filled with colorful birds and wildlife. Take a stroll through the sanctuary to get lost in the South Texas beauty.

Boca Chica Beach is the spot where the Rio Grande meets up with the Gulf of Mexico. It’s a pretty cool to see this water that has floated all the way down from El Paso.

Crockett, Texas! Drive with me through a town in Houston County, Texas!

Join me for an ultra high definition real time driving tour of Crockett, Texas! Crockett is the county seat of Houston County, Texas.

Crockett, Texas has a population of about 6,500 people. Crockett, Texas is named after the frontiersman Davy Crockett and it is where he camped on his journey to go fight at the Alamo. The Old San Antonio Road, which is a section of El Camino Real de los Tejas, runs through the area.

Crockett was founded in 1837 making it one of the oldest towns in Texas. Houston County was the first county established during the Republic of Texas.

Do not confuse Houston County, Texas with the City of Houston, which is located 100 miles to the south in Harris County, Texas. Both places are named after former president of the Republic of Texas Sam Houston.

Top 10 Texas State Parks

Top 10 Texas State Parks

In this video, Sharon and MiLena, the Two Tired Teachers, choose their 10 top favorite Texas State Parks. The choices are made for various reasons which the teachers will attempt to explain after each announces a favorite park.

The first pick went to Sharon who named Caprock Canyons State Park as her very favorite. The primary reason she chose Caprock Canyons is because of the bison. We saw really big bulls and calves that were so young that they hadn't yet begun to turn brown. Another reason Sharon selected this park was the amazing trails.

MiLena's top choice was probably Caprock Canyons, but since Sharon had just talked about that one, MiLena chose Balmorhea State Park. The only real draw for this park is its pool. The pool is 25' deep in parts and it is 68 - 72 degrees year round.

Sharon's second park was Mission Tejas State Park. It is an east Texas park with fewer than 20 campsites. The park sits at the tip of the Davy Crockett National Forest.

MiLena's next choice is Lake Mineral Wells State Park. One reason she chose this park is the swimming area. The park is big, and it's one of the few, if not the only state park with rock climbing.

Our fifth choice is Palmetto State Park. it is a beautiful park that isn't far from San Antonio. Although we didn't get to spend much time there, we will return to really explore this gorgeous park.

Number 6 of our top ten Texas State Parks is Purtis Creek State Park. It isn't as large as MiLena remembered, but is a good size park. The campsites are well defined, and it is a very relaxing state Park.

Sharon's next pick was Tyler State Park because it has very easy access to Interstate 20. The swimming are is very nice in the spring fed pool.

Possum Kingdom State Park is number 8. It's a pretty park with some beautiful CCC work. The smaller campsites are extremely well defined. In the premium sites there is lots of overflow parking for boats or other toys that may not fit in on the camping pad. Warning: The rangers are serious about campers not parking on the grass.

Sharon's next to the last choice is South Llano River State Park in Junction, TX. Her reason for choosing this park is its proximity to Interstate 10. South Llano River State Park has done an amazing job of ADA accessible sites. Even some of the walk-in tent sites are ADA accessible with paved sidewalks going to and around the first few campsites.

Our last choice is Bonham State Park. It is a tiny park with lots of stuff to do. They rent paddle boats and maybe kayaks. The community uses this park on the weekends. It's a beautiful state park.

Sharon gave honorable mention to Fort Davis State Park. Fort Davis is a National Historic Site. The state park is not in the fort itself, but they are close.

MiLena's honorable mention is Palo Duro State Park. The Two Tired Teachers haven't been there as adults although they did go as kids. It offers the outdoor musical TEXAS about the early settlers and their struggles. Plus, the canyon is breathtakingly beautiful.

This is the second in a series of videos about our Texas State Parks because we love our parks. The first was an overview. The next one will list the top five swimming holes. The one after that will give you some resources to use when exploring the parks. The final video in the series will be about the Texas State Parks park pass. Some changes have been made and we want to let you know about those.

Delicious Tex Mex at the Crockett Tavern!

We stopped in for lunch at the Crockett Tavern and toured the historic Crockett Hotel. The Tex Mex at this restaurant was absolutely delicious! This was a tasty surprise!

The Crockett hotel was built in 1909 and is tucked away behind the Alamo Grounds. This is one of three historic properties that surround the Alamo Grounds.
