5 days in CRETE, GREECE | traveling during OFF-PEAK season to a lesser-known island (skip Mykonos!)
In November, I went on a 5-day girls’ trip to Crete! This was my first time in Greece and I’m so glad we chose Crete out of all the other major islands. We rented a two-bedroom villa with the most beautiful interior, a balcony overlooking fruit trees and old houses, and a private pool. Everything we ate was AMAZING and grown directly on the island - from traditional dishes like bougatsa and various cheese pies, to local greens and hearty mushroom stews. We rented a car and drove around three major cities to explore the charm of each one.
A lot of locals were surprised we were in Crete during November. Everywhere we went, they would remind us that it’s “off-peak” season and that some places were closed. We definitely wished it was warmer, but in the end we realized that there were so many amazing moments we probably wouldn’t have experienced during the peak season. Empty roads, less tourists, quieter streets to stroll on; all of these are reasons why there is never a “perfect” time to travel. At the end of the day, I’m glad I never experienced the picture-perfect ‘Greece’ that tourists usually make up in their head. I got to soak in the charm, the grace, and all the magic that lives on the beautiful island of Crete :)

☀️ It's best to go to Crete in spring
Crete is a mountainous island with an area of over 8 thousand. km2. The developed coastline and numerous small islands mean that there are plenty of beautiful beaches and places suitable for water sports.
???? The island is made of sedimentary rocks, mainly limestone, which makes the three mountain ranges extremely picturesque. They hide numerous gorges and caves, many of which have become tourist destinations.
???? The Mediterranean climate of the island makes it warm and even hot in the summer, and serene, and the winter is very mild. However, in the mountains, which are up to 2,000 meters high, m, there are often heavy snowfalls.

???? It is also worth visiting other archaeological sites, where you can admire maybe slightly smaller palaces and other interesting ruins of buildings. Fajstos and Gortyna are equally interesting and show how European civilization began.
☀️ Charming cities of Crete
Greek towns have their own charm. It is no different in Crete. Chania, Rethymnon and Heraklion are some of the island's most beautiful cities to visit. Each of them has its own style and charm.
???? Chania impresses not only with its atmosphere, but also with its beautiful location between the sea and the mountains. Winding narrow streets, numerous taverns and a lot of monuments make it possible to walk around it for hours.
???? Rethymnon has a similar atmosphere, where most of the buildings come from Venetian times. It is a must to visit the mighty and magnificent Fortezza, a castle located on the island.

???? There are also numerous caves that can be explored. The most visited is the Dikte Cave. This is where Zeus was supposed to be born. The grotto impresses with its beautiful dripstones, just like most of the Cretan caves.
