We took an hour bus ride from the bustling city of Guadalajara to the quiet relaxed lakeside town of Ajijic, Jalisco. #Ajijic is sitting on the coast of the largest lake in Mexico, #LakeChapala. There are a few towns lining the Lake’s coast but Ajijic has a special draw to the town. It’s known as a Canadian and American retiree paradise.
We wondered why there was such a huge ex-pat community and what the big draw is. So, we took a few days to explore the town and see for ourselves what the big deal is.

This video from Culiacán, Sinaloa is part of my Let's Walk Around playlist - basically, we just walk around an area of city for 10 minutes in a completely raw and unedited fashion! No editing, no wind removal, nothing. It's something a bit different for those of you who simply want to take a look around a city. It's also a 4k walking tour!

Magic Town Cosalá - Natural Beauty, Cultural Riches, Historical Relevance, And Legends
Our last stop on the way back to Mazatlan brings us to Cosalá, another one of Mexico’s designated Magic Towns. More than two thousand years ago, pre- Hispanic tribes settled here as evidenced by their petroglyphs which can be seen in several areas.
Later, Spanish conquerors discovered mines here, and Cosalá’s mineral bounty fuelled colonial ambition with gold and silver for centuries. Today you can visit the biggest mine in western Mexico, Mina Guadalupe de Los Reyes.
Vádo Óndo, only ten minutes away, tempts by river streams and waterfalls surrounded by lush vegetation. About half an hour away, the hot springs in San José de Las Bócas are considered sacred due to their mythic healing properties.
The Mining and History Museum is an excellent place to learn a little bit more about Cosalá. It tells the history of civilization and rebellion and shows the mining tools used for over four centuries.
Scorpio Mining is a major landholder in the Cosalá district. Their land covers numerous exploration targets, advanced deposits, and historically producing mines. Multiple types and styles of mineralization are present in the district, including zinc, copper, lead, silver, and gold.
Treasure Hunting near the mines, rivers, and waterfalls can be very productive because the whole area around Cosalá is rich in minerals. The active mines are proof enough. They would not be there if there wasn't silver and gold.
Cosalá and the other towns selected by Treasure Hunt Mexico are all exciting places to visit. They share certain symbolic attributes: beauty, legends, history, and traditions. In one word: magical.
Treasure Hunters not only find excellent conditions for metal detecting and gold panning in these places, but they also discover the wonderful and unique characteristics of each of the Magic Towns in the area.
Cosalá means The place of surrounding beauty. Treasure Hunting is fascinating, but combined with natural beauty, cultural riches, historical relevance, and legends, it is even more exciting.

Ajijic Hiking Club consist of mostly Americans, Canadians a smaller Group of hikers are from all parts of the world.
The hiking group meets at the donut shop across the street from Guadalajara pharmacy at 8:30 AM in the morning and leaves for their hikes at 9 AM. The hikes range anywhere from 1 1/2 hours to 6 hours more or less and sometimes more. The elevation starts out at 5000 feet and can go as high as 10 thousand feet.
There are three levels of hikes beginners (hiking 1 1/2 hours to 3 hours) intermediate ( 3 to 4 hours) Advance 4 to 8 hours) the advance group meets at the donut shop at
8 AM in the morning. It's advisable to have good hiking shoes, hiking stick, water, something to eat, suntan lotion. Come and enjoy a beautiful hike through the mountains at Surround Lake Chapala.
