Top Tips For Traveling In Costa Rica! | Planning your first visit

Richard is the owner/broker of Coldwell Banker Tamarindo, and the founder of the vacation rental company Please get in touch if we can help.

Costa Rica is a wonderful country with friendly people, beautiful beaches and amazing jungle and wildlife. But bring your smarts, to avoid problems.

1. Beach, educational, wildlife, relaxing, cultural. You should prioritize, spiritual
It is good to think about what you want to get out of the trip, there are so many options. Learn to make pottery the traditional way, make tortillas, pick and grind coffee. See sloths etc
2. Which airport? Liberia or San Jose (Juan Santamaria)
There are 2 airports, Liberia (LIR) and San Jose (SJO). Both are clean and efficient and eye wateringly expensive food drink and souvenirs. Neither town has much to offer. At a push there is an interesting half day tour in San Jose, but only really if you need to fill your time. Best to get to your first nights accommodation if you can, rather than a night in an airport hotel
3. The people
In general the people are friendly and welcoming to visitors. You should take time to make some new friends. But just be aware there is an element out there looking to take
advantage and earn money out of you unfairly
4. Seeing the animals and sea life- rainforest walk, boat trip. Stay quiet
In the last month, doing no tours and just staying in my little town I have seen turtles, humpback whales, sharks, crocodiles, sloths, monkeys, iguanas, mapaches. Costa Rica has incredibly plentiful and diverse wildlife. When you are booking a wildlife tour, ask the guide what they have seen in the last few days. Stay quiet, it is not a zoo so if you make noise the animals will go away.
5. Car rental
Book well in advance, research if you need to pay the CDW or if it is covered on your card. They will try to sell it to you
6. Petty theft
Be aware of petty theft, don’t leave things in the car, on the beach, watch your wallet and phone
7. Packlightly, leave expensive jewelry at home
You won’t be dressing for dinner often, so pack lightly, a carry on bag should be enough. Light cottons are great. Leave the

jewelry at home, otherwise it will be a stress if you are leaving it in your car/hotel room.
8. Internal ‘puddle jumper’ flights are great
Take advantage of the great network of local 12 seater puddle jumper planes. Very good and reasonably priced. They use San Jose as a hub. A 5 hour drive is a 30 minute flight. Luggage limits
9. Use airbnbs and small local hotels
There are some beautiful chain hotels such as Four Seasons and Marriott, but try to get the local experience, small hotels and airbnbs. The all inclusives really seal your off in a bubble, get out and experience the local flavor
10.Each beach town is completely different to the next
Research your beaches carefully. Each one has its own unique flavor. Some you need a car, some you don't. Some black beaches some white, surf or no, rocky or swimming beach
11. It is hot
From 11am to 3pm it is hot hot hot. If you have activities, plan them for early or late in the day. Bring lots of water and sunscreen

Which Month To Visit Costa Rica? | Weather in Costa Rica!

Richard is the owner/broker of Coldwell Banker Tamarindo, and the founder of the vacation rental company Please get in touch if we can help.

Summary
I hate it when I hear about the dry season rainy season concept in Costa Rica. Any month is a great month to visit. 70% of tourism is concentrated in the Christmas to Easter period, but Costa Rica is a year round destination. My observations are for the Guanacaste area, as you go South it gets wetter and wetter, but broadly the same pattern. Caribbean side is completely different
1. JanuaryFebruaryMarch
Perfect sunny weather every day, no rain, breeze from the Papagayo winds makes this idyllic 86F 30C every day. As you get toward Easter everything is very dry and the grass a bit brown.
2. April/May
The Papagayo winds die off, first week after Easter we start to get rain. The first time it rains after 4 months everyone comes out into the street to feel it. It is very special. The flora goes from brown/yellow to lush green after a couple of weeks. It becomes more humid. Typically sunny hot days, cloud/rain later afternoon
3. June/July/August
Costa Rica has its mini summer that the gringos don't know about. This is a great time to visit. The humidity is less, everything
is still very green because it is still raining some afternoons.
4. September/October
This is the rainy season. It tends to be humid, no breeze. We still get sunny mornings, but afternoons and evenings you can plan on hard rain. Rain like you have never seen before. Sometimes the roads flood, even to chest height sometimes, but then within an hour all the water dispurses. There will be tropical depressions where you don't see the sun for a week.
5. November
Sometimes the rains carry on into November, which is a transition month to summer. I love it at this time and the snow birds start to arrive and you definitely feel that summer is on the way
6. December
This is my favorite month, not many gringos this time of year, but weather is perfect, everything is lush. Ideal sunny dry weather

SANTA TERESA, COSTA RICA 20 YEARS LATER! (TRAVEL GUIDE)

It's been 20 years since I have been in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica and as I know a lot can change in that amount of time I guess I wasn’t full expecting it to change so much! Santa Teresa, Costa Rica is located on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula and is known for its surf and laidback atmosphere. It seems over the past decade the word has gotten out of how beautiful Santa Teresa is and tourists and foreign investors have been flocking here. So in this Costa Rica Travel Vlog we will be showing you around Playa Carmen, Playa Santa Teresa, a bit of Mal Pais and up to the Montezuma Waterfalls on ATV. I will also be talking about my experience returning after 20 years and a little of how this development has affected the locals, which is always something you should keep in mind when traveling, supporting the locals.

Lankester Gardens and Cartago, Costa Rica

Cartago is a pretty, smaller city approximately 1 hour by bus from San Jose, the capital. In comparison to San Jose, it is a bit tamer. Whilst I had been in Cartago on previous trips, I hadn't visited Lankester Gardens which were a pretty find. The gardens extend over several acres and are separated into different sections. While I wouldn't discount Costa Rica's splendid nature reserves at all, Lankester Gardens provide a safe alternative to trekking in the jungle to see much of what the country has to offer. I've always enjoyed a well-tended garden and Lankester Gardens fit the bill! Song is by Editus, an exquisite instrumental group from Costa Rica.

5 Curious Things About Costa Rica

Hi everyone, in this video I’ll tell you about 5 very super interesting/Curious things in Costa Rica!

???????????? I am John Ordonez Real estate professional for over 10 years here in Costa Rica specialized in Luxury Real Estate. So if you are interested in Costa Rica real estate and life, this is your channel.
Please help us grow and supports the channel by clicking the red subscribe button or like and share in FB and other social media!

Question of the day! Do you know where exactly is Costa Rica and how big it is?

????????????Now let’s jump to the information.

????????????Number 1) There is an area in the country where people tend to live over 100 years old, Nicoya is located on the north west side of the country and is also one of the 5 BLUE ZONES or longevity spots in the world, this means that there is a big tendency to live 100 or more years in this specific area or areas in the world. Other Blue Zone areas are Icaria in Greece, Loma Linda California, Sardinia Italy and Okinawa Japan.
In these specific areas the studies found some similarities such as Eaten Less over all, eating more fruits and vegetables, staying active throughout life and positive thinking towards ageing.

????????????2) Ballena Beach in the central pacific coast has an exact figure of a whale’s tale, the area is super beautiful, has incredible surfing spots, a lot of wild life and an even better NEW modern and contemporary Luxury Real Estate portfolio available! The area is famous as well for being a great location for whale and dolphin watching. Marino Ballena national park is a great place to visit in this area! This area offers a unique setting for all type of Real Estate in Costa Rica, there many projects and new developments for the area which is very famous worldwide!

????????????3) There is no army in Costa Rica, incredible don’t you think? Since 1948 there is no army in the country, by that time the president Figueres Ferrer Said” I do not want soldiers but Teachers” and Costa Rica celebrates this decision every December first.
Police force in Costa Rica is not very well trained and this has increased crime levels in the past few years however, Costa Rica comparing with a lot of countries has a lot less crime rate and violence.

????????????4) Costa Rica is similar in size to West Virginia in the US and has a total of 19,700 Square miles, within this small country there are 200 volcanic formations, from which about 100 show some sign of volcanic activity, and only 5 have been declared active volcanoes, most active volcanoes are located in the northern part of the country and central highlands. Those active volcanoes are Poas,Irazu, Arenal,Rincon de la Vieja and Turrialba. The Arenal volcano area has attracted many foreigners to live and enjoy the richness of the area and many have built their dreamed home there, in the area one can find amazing and unique Real Estate, luxury real estate and many commercial opportunities.
This incredible area is full of high quality hotels with private Thermal spring pools and waterfalls, definitely a MUST visit when coming to Costa Rica, the area is one of the most beautiful areas I have ever visited.

????????????5) Do you like insects or do they make you afraid? Costa Rica has about 750,000 species of insects that live in the country, that’s including about 20,000 different types of spiders and the most common ones in the country are Tarantula and golden silk orb weaver so please if you are vacationing in Costa Rica don’t ask If there are too many mosquitoes or insects?

Reasons Why I Love Tamarindo, Costa Rica

Richard is the owner/broker of Coldwell Banker Tamarindo, and the founder of the vacation rental company Please get in touch if we can help.

Summary
Tamarindo is my happy place. If I had to give one reason, it is the community. Such a great mix of nationalities, ages and backgrounds.

In researching this with my friends, one word kept appearing. MAGICAL. Everyone is loving life in this beautiful Costa Rican beach town
1. GreatBeaches
In a country full of beautiful beaches, it is hard to pin down the absolute best. But Tamarindo offers uncrowded white sand beaches, shade and swimmable ocean. Everyone has a favorite area of beach
2. Community
Everyone is in Tamarindo because they love it. Look around at sunset, everyone has a smile on their faces. Weather you want to do bingo on a Tuesday night, poker night or party til sunrise, you have options. The community is open and friendly, keen to welcome new ‘locals’
3. Nightlife
Tamarindo is well known for its nightlife. It is not a place for cocktail parties and anything remotely posh, but if you want something a little more upscale there is Rumors or Lizard, or more base and ‘local’ like Pacifico. You have plenty of options. Once you know the right people, there are lots of villa parties.
4. Something for Every Age group
There is something for everyone, from teenagers up to retirees, so if you have multi generational family members visiting, everyone has something to do
5. Beach bars
In Costa Rica, tamarindo is the undisputed king for beach bars. The beach walk /crawl from Witches Rock to Langosta Beach club takes in probably 10 beach bars, all offering live music, DJs or just great happy hour cocktails
6. It is magical!
There is an X factor about Tamarindo, it is magical, no other word!
7. Sportsandactivities
Tamarindo is famous for the surfing, but there is great diving, sport fishing, golf, biking, ATV tours, zip lining, horse riding. Add in turtle tours and the monkey park
8. It’s safe
In general I always feel completely safe, and will wander along the beach at 2am without a concern. But let’s keep it real, although there is almost zero violent crime in Tamarindo, there is petty thievery such as

sandals taken off the beach, mobile phones being lifted from your pocket in a crowded bar. . Also there are drug dealers on the street doing their thing, but just ignore them and they leave you alone. In general if you keep your wits about you then you are fine.
9. Weather
Just bring your sandals, t shirts and shorts, weather is great year round. Check out my previous video for the breakdown by month
10.Infrastructure
Compared to other beach towns, Tamarindo has good infrastructure, proper large supermarkets with brands you recognize, mostly paved roads, police station, gas station, post office
