WARRAGAMBA DAM / AUSTRALIA'S LARGEST URBAN WATER SUPPLY / TOURIST SPOT OF NSW / DAY TRIP FROM SYDNEY

#WarragambaDam
#nswdam
#vanlife

In this episode, we travel in our converted Ford transit campervan, with our dog, to Warragamba Dam - Australia’s largest urban water supply dam. You can free camp a few hundred meters from the Dam.

WARRAGAMBA DAM
Australia’s largest urban water supply dam. Look out at Warragamba Dam and see the past and future of Sydney's water supply. Marvel at this engineering masterpiece as it nestles quietly in native bushland. Delve into the history of the dam builders who labored to create one of the world's largest domestic water supply dams. Look into the future at the interactive 'Water for Life' exhibition. Just a 30-minute drive from Penrith, or one hour from Sydney's CBD.

There are three viewing platforms at the Warragamba Dam Visitor Centre which offer excellent vistas of the upstream dam wall and Lake Burragorang. Pedestrian access to parts of the Warragamba Dam wall is available on weekends and public holidays between 10am and 4pm, except Christmas Day and Good Friday.

Things to do while visiting the Dam:
Stand on one of the viewing platforms and have your photo taken with the 'quiet beast'. Warragamba Dam's nickname comes from the fact that three million tonnes of concrete is holding back four Sydney Harbours of water, yet the atmosphere is calm and peaceful. It was an engineering masterpiece of the mid-20th Century - and it still takes your breath away today.

Soak in the views
Gaze down upon the dam wall and a small part of Lake Burragorang from the deck of the magnificent visitor center, perched high on a rocky outcrop, or head down to the dam wall on weekends and public holidays ONLY for a close-up view of the Lake. The lake created by the dam stretches back 52 kilometers from the wall. Nearby, Eighteenth Street Lookout provides the best view of the dam wall height and auxiliary spillway.

Step into the future
Step inside the modern visitor center and enjoy a better view of the dam. Take a journey through the water cycle in the 'Water for Life' exhibition. Be amazed by the unique 'drops of wisdom' interactive table.

Relax with a picnic on the grounds outside the Visitors Centre

Eighteenth Street Warragamba
A few minutes' drive from the dam through the Warragamba township, the Eighteenth Street Lookout provides a view of the auxiliary spillway and a distant view of the Warragamba Dam wall. Open daily from 10am to 5pm.

We hiked BLUFF KNOLL for Sunrise | Stirling Range National Park, WA

One of the most challenging hikes we have done in our lives! We woke up SUPER early to summit Bluff Knoll at sunrise and had an awesome experience with the clouds falling over the peak.

We then went on to climb Castle Rock and the Granite Skywalk ON THE SAME DAY.

Mt Kembla Summit Track 2018

A walk up to the summit of Mt Kembla, the tallest mountain on the Illawarra escarpment. Starting point, Mt Kembla look out at the end of Cordeaux Road, Kembla Heights. It took us about 2 hours with stops to do the return 3 km bush walk. There are some steep and challenging bits, but we were able to do it with a four year old and adults of varying fitness levels. Recommend sturdy lace up walking shoes and long pants if you don't want your legs scratched. Take your water bottle , snacks and camera, but please take all your rubbish with you. It was sad to see two water bottles thrown into the bush where they will never degrade, but apart from that the track is rubbish free and full of beautiful native vegetation. You are rewarded with stunning views to the south of Mt Kembla over Lake Illawarra.

NSW New England Rail Action. September 2022

Welcome aboard! After several days on the Main South it was almost painful to tear myself away and head north to the NSW New England. This is the area just north of where the Hunter Valley ends, and before you get into the Northern Tablelands district.

In this video we return to an old favourite location for train watching: Ardglen Bank. This awesome 1 in 40 grade has featured in two previous videos, which I will link to below, along with my Riverina Rails video. Aside from visiting Ardglen Bank and watching GE's on 10,000+ tonne export coal trains, we venture slightly further north to Calcuts Creek to watch triple 90 class buffer up to a PN (Pacific National) coalie, ready for the big push. We see the QRN/Aurizon coalies at work as well as the added bonus of ex-Victorian Railways Hudson R766, now defying the nay-sayers who said it would never run on Standard Gauge! I see it but struggle to believe it! A Victorian steam loco so far from home!!! ????????

Please join me in this video that I had a *LOT* of enjoyment in making! _*Please also,*_ show your support for my efforts by clicking the ???? button! It won't hurt you!!! If you're new here, thanks for stopping by. Please improve my day by subscribing to my channel. Over 200 videos and counting, there's sure to be something transport-related to interest you! ????

Mt Barney - Logans ridge

Winter 2021 #5 - A one way trip up Logans ridge, observing the route and its features.
Walking conditions : Tracks, footpads, scrambling and short climbs.
Walk length : About 7 km one way. 1000 metre height gain.
Notes : Logans ridge is a very direct route to East peak. Half the route is scrambling, and many steep, exposed sections are passed (and crossed) along the way.

New title info...
Due to changing conditions every year on the mountain, this video is now a little out of date. Of course, we will find all the rocks in the same places, but the scrub is another matter. In recent visits (Autumn 2023), I have noted the following alterations :
There is a new gate at Yellowpinch to enter the paddock land. Thanks to all involved!
On the forest walk beyond the track head sign, the highest section (just before the first rocks), is very overgrown. (650m)
Above here, but below the slab top lookout, a tree has fallen into the top of the steep gully that contains the footpad, and is very awkward to get through. (720m)
At the slab top lookout, the large tree that provided welcome shade has fallen across the slab tops and must be clambered over. A sad loss. (760m)
Higher up, in the awkward gully, there was a pile of deadfall in the gully head, just before the cairn, and it has been removed. Thanks to whoever did that. (790m)
From the knoll top, in the section that leads to the climb to the notch, the scrub has become very overgrown, obscuring the footpad, which is probably the only viable way. (860m)
The ridge is fairly unchanged beyond there, all the way to the short wall above the chimney climb. From there, the scrub is very thick all the way to the highest knoll, and the footpad is practically indiscernible. (1170m)
Finally, this video makes Logans ridge seem easy, but that is not true - the ridge is hard yakka, and a full body workout. Good luck up there!

Original title info...
This is the beginning of guide territory, and they are definitely worth considering. A guide can provide huge amounts of know-how, especially on a first trip. Mt Barney Lodge have tons of expertise, and their people are always on the mountain. (Not an ad!)
This was the first successful ascent route by a European person, and I still marvel at how Captain Logan got up here on that day in 1828. It is one thing to follow the foot pad, but to actually find the way up here would not have been easy. He sighted Mt Warning from the summit (Mt Warning had mainly been seen from the coast), and that knowledge, along with the river catchment sources, helped to place the QLD/NSW border.
If you have ever been on the mountain and realised that your fitness is inadequate (perhaps the legs have gone to jelly), spare a thought for poor Charles Fraser, who accompanied Logan on that day. Fraser ascended for much of the way, but couldn't keep up, and had to stop on a high knoll, leaving Logan to continue on without him (Logan was apparently a very strong climber).
The unfortunate chap managed eventually to descend to the support party, and from there had to be assisted back to camp. This would have made Mr Fraser the first recorded person to find that there is no easy way to climb Mt Barney. But that honour was already taken by Logan himself, because in the previous winter he had unsuccessfully tried (twice) to climb the mountain from a northern approach.
Information interpreted from a biography of Patrick Logan by Charles Bateson.
This is an incredible ridge for those who enjoy this type of thing. Take care to plan well, a shower of rain would make things very uncomfortable up there.
