Hickory NC is also one of the nicest places to live in the United States. I've been blessed to live nearby Hickory for the last 35 years. All the small cities and towns in the Catawba Valley and WNC Foothills are really special, with lots of kind and hard-working people. Come along with me on this partial driving and partial walking tour of Hickory. We'll see the downtown, some of the primary shopping areas, the motor mile, main connector streets and thoroughfares. I'll do my best to get some additional regions in coming months. And yes this is a pretty affordable area (so far).

Conover , North Carolina | Once called: Wye Town, Canova & C-Town
The City of Conover began to develop in the mid-1800s as a “Y” intersection of the railroad traversing North Carolina. Although originally called Wye Town, legend says the name Canova was adopted, but transposed to Conover over several years. The City of Conover was chartered in 1876 and incorporated in 1877.
The Bolick Historic District and George Huffman Farm are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

We drove from Sevierville, Tennessee to Conover, North Carolina to stay with Ralph and Patricia Hatch at the Sweet Tea B&B. They had a full itinerary for us, so we dropped our bags and got going.
The first stop was in the Catawba Valley (near Catawba Falls, NC) to Murray's Mill. Check out their website to learn all about their history. Add this to your historic places in America/historic places in North Carolina that you need to visit. That's really why we. do these United States travel guides, so we can show you United States travel destinations that you need to visit. Murray's Mill is a must!
Since we were in the area, we wanted to find the best places to eat in North Carolina, and Ralph and Patricia took us to Fresh Chef. They had their usual. Joanie B. had the shrimp and grits and Jenni B. had the scallops with fresh veggies and grits.

Ottawa grew up between 1820 and 1840 from a construction base where the Rideau Canal diverged from the Ottawa River. British Colonel John By (1779-1836) was in charge of the canal project, and consequently, the town was known as Bytown. In 1854, the town changed its name to Ottawa, and later developed as the Canadian capital.
