10. La Paloma
La Palomadreamstime/© Luq1
A small city, La Paloma lies on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and is a popular summer beach resort amongst South Americans and Uruguayans themselves, who flock here to enjoy the sun, sea and sand.

9. Santa Teresa National Park
Santa Teresa National Parkdreamstime/© Stefano Ember
Bordering the laid-back Punta del Diablo is the marvelous Santa Teresa National Park which nature lovers will absolutely adore as it encompasses a diverse array of landscapes, ecosystems and fauna and flora.

8. Punta del Diablo
Punta del Diablodreamstime/© Kseniya Ragozina
A popular place to visit among Argentines and Uruguayans looking to head to the beach and bask in the rays, Punta del Diablo is a lovely place to visit and despite recent development projects still has the feel of a picturesque and charming little fishing village.

7. Carmelo
Located near the spot where the Rio de la Plata and the Rio Uruguay join, Carmelo is an increasingly popular tourist destination and with good reason, as it is dripping with charm, as wonderful old buildings and cobbled streets make up much of the town.

6. Salto
The second largest city in Uruguay, many people stop off here on their way to Argentina. This is certainly is a picturesque place as it borders the majestic Rio Uruguay. Salto is actually named after the falls which make a ‘big jump’ down near the city.

5. Piriapolis
With a very Mediterranean feel to it, Piriapolis’ wonderful beaches are great for lounging on, and the long promenade that hugs the waterfront is perfect for relaxing strolls while taking in the sun and river views.

4. Tacuarembo
Located in the north of the country, Tacuarembo is as gaucho as they come and the rolling hills that surround the city are full of cattle and sprawling fields. As such, there is a distinctive cowboy feel about the place, and the culture, language and food here is very different from the rest of Uruguay. With lovely leafy plazas and tree-filled avenues for you to enjoy,

3. Punta del Este
This upmarket beach resort town is so luxurious and fancy that it is often called the Monaco or Saint-Tropez of South America, where yachts, casinos and trendy cocktail bars abound in this playground of the rich.

2. Colonia del Sacramento
The historic quarter of Colonia del Sacramento is absolutely stunning to wander around as it is one of the oldest cities in Uruguay and wonderful colonial architecture and picturesque old cobbled streets are everywhere you look.

1. Montevideo
The capital of Uruguay, Montevideo is a fascinating place to explore, and visitors to the city invariably come away having loved everything that they’ve seen and done.

URUGUAY DAY TRIP | Colonia del Sacramento Uruguay - UNESCO World Heritage Site

Day 3 in Argentina, and today we decided to hop on a ferry across the River Plata to the neighboring country of Uruguay! To be exact - we were visiting the quaint town of Colonia del Sacramento Uruguay.

Colonia del Sacramento is an hour and a half ferry ride. There are two companies that offer this service, and we picked Buquebus. It is a quick and easy day trip from Buenos Aires!

Colonia is a beautiful town, and rightly so, protected and designated as a UNESCO Heritage Site. Cobblestone streets are lined with sycamore trees, and in some places, there are beautiful old cars, too.

Our first stop was an ice cream shop - the dolce de leche ice cream was very good!

The lighthouse is one of the highlights of Colonia del Sacramento. It cost only USD1 to go up (cash only) - and it is much cheaper if you pay with USD instead of Uruguayan or Argentinian pesos!
Everywhere you go in Uruguay, they will accept these three currencies. Although in many places, the rates given is not the best!

We found a beach in Colonia! It was a small sandy beach, but nonetheless - a beach.

Colonia del Sacramento is definitely a great Buenos Aires day trip, and we highly recommend it. The roundtrip ferry ticket costs around 70 usd per person - Buquebus also offers 4-hr ferry ride to Uruguayan capital of Montevideo.

URUGUAY: DAY TRIP TO COLONIA DEL SACRAMENTO

We took a ferry from Buenos Aires, Argentina to Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay.

We went with Buquebus ferry company. The cost is 75 USD for a round trip. There is a cheaper option (Colonia Express) but they sold out for the day we wanted to go.

The ferry left at 8:30 AM. The ride took about one hour, and we were provided a complimentary breakfast. Before we had our own free time, we also had a bus and walking tour to get more familiar with the city.

We then rented a bike - a cheap and great way to tour the city. We visited the beach and the old historical town.
The town itself is very charming... Instagram worthy!
We didn't do a good job at taking clips for the videos this time. So check out our photos on Instagram @jetlagwarriors to get a better look of how beautiful this town is!
