We were shocked by the number of expats in this area! While it was a beautiful place with lots of amenities that will appeal to retirees, it wasn't at all what we expected.

Is it easy or hard to live alone in Mexico? Well, I've been traveling Mexico for about 5 years now but for the past five months, my home base has been in a small town called Ajijic next to Lake Chapala (the biggest lake in Mexico.)
In this Mexico vlog, I'll be showing what my daily life looks like, including a dentist appointment, taking the bus, grocery shopping, what I typically cook at home, going to the gym, and getting a haircut. We're one of the thousands of expats who adore the charming qualities of Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico. But it's true, there are some details that aren't the greatest. We wanted to make this video to give people the full picture on Ajijic (the negative details you might even call deal breakers) to make sure people can make an educated decision about moving to or retiring in Ajijic.
As Americans living in Mexico, we think the Lake Chapala area as a lot to offer. But it's not without its downsides.
If you're considering retiring in a Latin America country, Mexico could very well be a great fit! Immigration from the US is extremely common, there are more migrants coming to Lake Chapala every day!
Although the Ajijic area has a lot going for it, it can be hard to find information about the negative side of things. This video is your resource!

What is the climate in Lake Chapala?
The lake and surrounding mountains ensure warm daytime temperatures throughout the year, averaging a mild 74 F. And, because Lake Chapala sits at 5,000 feet above sea level, humidity is not a problem. ... Once the rain starts the temperature cools as much as 10 degrees and the mountains turn a lush green again.
The coolest months of Ajijic weather are December and January with an average daytime high temperature of 24°c/75° f but it has been known to dip down to 15°c/60°f at times. February and March are very pleasant months with an average daytime temperature in the high 20's celcius/70's fahrenhiet.

In today's Mexico travel vlog, we experience even more of Ajijic, Jalisco. We are so glad we took a chance on Villa del Angel B&B because it was just the health retreat we needed. While we were there, we tried out horseback riding for the first time, enjoyed Thai food, and relaxed at this huge former hacienda/mansion with stretching, meditation, homemade breakfasts...and one REALLY unexpected surprise. Mexico continues to shock us.

Exploring Ajijic Mexico
Walking the streets of Ajijic, Mexico as we make our way to the nearby town of San Antonio Tlayapacan. We spent a month in Ajijic and the Lake Chapala area. Ajijic is about an hour south of Guadalajara. The Lake Chapala area and Ajijic in particular are popular destinations for US and Canadian retirees, especially during the winter months. There are many services and businesses that cater to the expat community, and English is more readily spoken here than any of the other locations we’ve visited so far in Mexico. I was expecting a fun and leisurely day in this charming Mexican lake town called Ajijic, but then this happened... (bonus: my first ???? ukulele/singing ???? debut)

Recently, I've been house hunting in Mexico, looking for the perfect home to buy. After viewing a few options in Queretaro (my former home of 1 year), I decided to check out Ajijic at Lake Chapala because I lived here for about 4 months back in 2018 and really enjoyed my time here.
Ajijic, Jalisco is known for having one of the largest communities of foreigners in Mexico. Hundreds of Americans and Canadians flock here every year. That's a selling feature for some and a turn-off for others. In any case, Ajijic certainly has lots of small-town charm with it's cobblestone streets, pleasant weather year-round, beautiful nature, and diverse restaurant scene.
In today's Mexico vlog, I am spending a day in Ajijic to try and decide whether this town is somewhere I'd like to live and/or buy a home! What do you think?
