Hey Happy Travelers!
Welcome to the Norwegian Joy, our very first NCL cruise! We are on a 12 night Caribbean sailing visiting Limón Costa Rica, Colon Panama, Cartagena Colombia, Oranjestad Aruba, Williamstead Curaçao, and Great Stirrup Cay (Norwegian’s private island)! This will mark as our longest sailing, so we are very excited to enjoy this new itinerary, as well as have plenty of time to see what NCL is all about!
It is Day 6 onboard the Norwegian Joy and we are in Colon Panama! Today we are taking on the port on our own and visiting the Agua Clara locks! We had an awesome cab driver who took us to the old Gatun locks and gave us a great view of the canal via the Atlantic Bridge!

Ep. 70 - Colon (Walking around Panama's most dangerous city)
Part of our Panama Canal transit process was paying for it all in the city of Colon. Multiple friends, guidebooks, and locals said this was a SUPER dangerous city to be in. So of course after we paid our transit fee, we decided to buy some cans of premixed Rum & Cokes and walk around to sight see a bit. With COVID-19 restrictions still in effect, not many bars were open nor restaurants, but we were able to see some sights none the less. We were the only tourist walking around, and did draw some attention from locals. They were overly friendly and only in some sections of the city did we feel a little out of place.

Panama Canal Railway Company Tour From Panama City to Colon City
Welcome to Panama!
This time we took a tour from Panama City to Colon City in the Panama Canal Railway Company.
This a trip that you need to take if you want to have a nice trip with views of the canal and also surrounded by nature.
This is a trip that takes about 1 hour in each direction. There are two options that you can request regarding the wagon, that could be the standard or the panoramic view. It does make a difference because the view is amazing but the panoramic wagon is limited compared to the standard. But either way, the view is amazing.
The Railway was built between 1850 and 1855 it took 5 years with over 8 million dollar and more than 10,000 lives.
The conditions in Panama at that time were very aggressive and it was the same conditions that later made it difficult to build the Panama Canal but thanks to the railway this was an easier task but still difficult for the workers.
The most interesting fact is that the Railway company ran out of money (they had started with 1,000,000) but just within the first 11 km they were struggling without knowing how to finish the line.
