Tour of Albany NY State Capital
On this historic tour of Albany, New York, we'll get to experience some of the great excursions throughout the Capital District. We begin our journey at the New York State Capitol Building, right in the heart of downtown Albany. We'll take in the scenic sky view of the Capital by observing from the Erastus Corning Building.
The tour will take us around Albany County to get a close up look at Albany's variety of neighborhoods. Right in the heart of a classic neighborhood, we'll discover Washington Park. Further exploring the district, we'll venture into several places throughout Albany County to experience the great Erie Canal. Concluding the great adventure, we circle back to the center of Albany and explore the NY State Museum and Empire State Plaza. So join me on this great tour of Albany, NY!

The city was officially chartered in 1686 under English rule. It became the capital of New York in 1797 following formation of the United States. Albany is one of the oldest surviving settlements of the original British thirteen colonies, and is the longest continuously chartered city in the United States.

The Hudson River area was originally inhabited by Algonquian-speaking Mohican (Mahican), who called it Pempotowwuthut-Muhhcanneuw. The area was settled by Dutch colonists who, in 1614, built Fort Nassau for fur trading and in 1624, built Fort Orange. In 1664, the English took over the Dutch settlements, renaming the city Albany in honor of the Duke of Albany, the future James II. The city was officially chartered in 1686 under English rule. It became the capital of New York in 1797 after the formation of the United States. Albany is one of the oldest surviving settlements of the original British thirteen colonies; no other city in the United States has been continuously chartered as long.
In the late 18th century and throughout most of the 19th, Albany was a center of trade and transportation. The city lies toward the north end of the navigable Hudson River. It was the original eastern terminus of the Erie Canal, connecting to the Great Lakes, and was home to some of the earliest railroads in the world. In the 1920s a powerful political machine controlled by the Democratic Party arose in Albany. In the latter part of the 20th century, Albany's population shrank because of urban sprawl and suburbanization. In the 1990s, the New York State Legislature approved for the city a US$234 million building and renovation plan, which spurred redevelopment downtown. In the early 21st century, Albany's high-technology industry grew, with great strides in nanotechnology.

The Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza (known commonly as the Empire State Plaza, and also as the South Mall) is a complex of several state government buildings in downtown Albany, New York.The complex was built between 1965 and 1976 at an estimated total cost of $2 billion.[3] It houses several departments of the New York State administration and is integrated with the New York State Capitol, completed in 1899, which houses the state legislature. Among the offices at the plaza are the Department of Health and the Biggs Laboratory of the Wadsworth Center. The Empire State Art Collection, a major public collection of 1960s and 1970s monumental abstract artworks, is on permanent display throughout the site. Martin Van Buren National Historic Site - Beautiful Upstate New York
Martin Van Buren National Historic Site is is located 20 miles south of Albany, New York, and two miles south of the village of Kinderhook, New York. The National Historic Site preserves the estate and thirty-six room mansion of Martin Van Buren, the eighth President of the United States. Van Buren purchased the estate, which he named Lindenwald, in 1839 during his one term as President and it became his home and farm during his retirement (wikipedia).
With me were my wife and son as we visited this site in the summer of 2018. Other stops on this trip were Saratoga, Fort Stanwix and Cooperstown (the Baseball Hall of Fame).
