Udine is a city and comune in north-eastern Italy, in the middle of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps (Alpi Carniche). Udine is the historical capital of Friuli. The area has been inhabited since the Neolithic age, and is believed to have been settled by Illyrians. Based on an old Hungarian legend, Attila (?–453), the leader of the Huns, built a hill there, when besieging Aquileia, because he needed a winter quarters billet: he instructed his soldiers to bring soil in their helmets and shields, because the landscape was too flat, without any hill. He established the town there, and built a square-shape tower. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the area increased in importance after the decline of Aquileia and afterwards of Cividale also. In AD 983 Udine was mentioned for the first time, with the donation of the Utinum castle by emperor Otto II to the Patriarchs of Aquileia, then the main feudal lords of the region. In 1223, with the foundation of the market, the city became finally the most important in the area for economy and trade, and also became the Patriarch's seat. In 1420, it was conquered by the Republic of Venice. In 1511, it was the seat of a short civil war, which was followed by an earthquake and a plague. Udine remained under Venetian control until 1797, being the second largest city in the state. After the short French domination which ensued, it was part of the Austrian-puppet Lombardy-Venetia Kingdom, and was included in the newly formed Kingdom of Italy in 1866. During World War I, before the defeat in the battle of Caporetto, Udine became the seat of the Italian High Command and was nicknamed Capitale della Guerra (War Capital). After the battle, it was occupied by the Germans in 1917 and Austrians in 1918 until after the Battle of Vittorio Veneto in 1918. After the war it was made capital of a short-lived province (Provincia del Friuli) which included the current provinces of Gorizia, Pordenone and Udine. After September 8, 1943, when Italy surrendered to the Allies in World War II, the city was under direct German administration, which ceased in April 1945.

I continue through Veneto Giulia along what I believe to be part of a Roman road - the Via Anna before heading north along new roads and getting my first views of the Alps. Although it is June, the rain gets quite heavy and I decide to take shelter and use the time to have something to eat. Despite the bad weather now, the weather had been very nice and the rain and hail, although severe, quickly clears up.
My channel on you tube : is very prolific. I have produced over 2,500 original films.
My big interest in life is travel and history but I have also placed films on other subjects. For those that want to know more, I have groups on facebook related to motorhome travelling, history and packaging.

Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine!
Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!

Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta (Italian: Basilica Patriarcale di Santa Maria Assunta is the principal church in the town of Aquileia, in the Province of Udine and the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy.
The original church dated back to the fourth century. The current basilica was built in the eleventh century and rebuilt again in the thirteenth century. It is located on Via Sacra, overlooking the Piazza del Capitolo, along with the bell tower and baptistery.

Un bellissimo giro in camper in Friuli Venezia Giulia
La nostra vacanza di Pasqua in una comitiva di 4 camper. Partiti da Padova il venerdì pomeriggio siamo arrivati a Ciconicco di Fagagna (UD) giusti in tempo per cenare e poi assistere alla coinvolgente Sacra Rappresentazione del Venerdì Santo.
Il sabato mattina ci siamo spostati in camper ad Udine per visitare a piedi il centro città, godendo del bel tempo e del clima festoso ed al contempo tranquillo che si respira nelle vie e nelle belle piazze del capoluogo friulano.
Dopo un gustoso pranzo all'aperto, riprendiamo i camper per raggiungere il parco di villa De' Brandis a San Giovanni al Natisone (sempre in provincia di Udine). Il parco, con ingresso libero, è bello e suggestivo, ma purtroppo sono in corso dei lavori e non sembra mantenuto con la cura che meriterebbe. Da tornare in un periodo migliore.
Adesso dobbiamo valutare bene cosa fare per domani che è il giorno di Pasqua. Viste le previsioni meteo, decidiamo di non andare a Palmanova come da programma, ma di spostarci nella interessante Gorizia. Sono pochi chilometri di distanza che però hanno fatto la differenza risparmiandoci un solenne acquazzone! A Gorizia ci sistemiamo in un bellissimo parcheggio attrezzato e gratuito vicino al centro.
ll mattino di Pasqua facciamo una bella passeggiata fino alla chiesa di Sant'Ignazio nella elegante piazza della Vittoria. Qui assistiamo alla Santa Messa Pasquale celebrata dall'Arcivescovo.
Poi ci soffermiamo ad ammirare la piazza baciati dal sole e quindi ci godiamo uno spritz tutti assieme prima di andare a pranzo all'area camper.
Nel pomeriggio ci spostiamo nell'area camper gratuita di villa Manin a Passariano di Codroipo (UD). Il meteo è fantastico e così ci godiamo la visita alla stupenda villa e sopratutto al suo magnifico parco.
Le previsioni meteo per tutto il periodo di festa erano pessime, ma noi non abbiamo preso un goggio d'acqua. Tutti dicevano che in giro c'era un traffico ed una ressa incredibili, ma noi abbiamo trovato tutto scorrevole e tanta serenità. Tutti dicevano che i prezzi erano carissimi ovunque, ma noi abbiamo sostato giorno e notte senza spendere mai nulla. Mitico Friuli!

Medical Cannabis Bike Tour 2016 Day #1 - Kransjka Gora to Codroipo
MCBT Day 1: Kransjka Gora – Codroipo: 144 km
The 2016 Medical Cannabis Bike Tour began in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, in May. Located in the Julian Alps near the Italian and Austrian borders, the first day’s ride was mountainous and the first 12 km (from 800m – 1600 m) were described as ‘pure hell’ by many of the cyclists! At the highest point the tour rode across snowy peaks with eagles flying overhead. Crossing the border after 75 km, the bike tour arrived in northern Italy where the countryside became much more easy going. After day 1, the tour had already developed a great spirit of comradeship and adventure!
The 2016 MCBT
Over 80 international riders and volunteers took part in the 2016 Medical Cannabis Bike Tour, the fifth edition of the tour. The largest cannabis sporting event in Europe, the event covers 420km in 3 days.
A non-profit organization, the Medical Cannabis Bike Tour Foundation raises money for medical cannabis research through research. The 2016 bike tour raised over 100,000€, through the generosity of sponsorship by a number of companies.
The aim of the MCBT is to raise funds to develop the research of scientists from Madrid's Complutense University (including Dr Manuel Guzman, Dr Guillermo Velasco and Dr Cristina Sanchez).
The scientists have been researching the effects of cannabinoids (THC and CBD) on cancer, for the past 15 years. Their research was recognized by the scientific community after an article was published in Nature Magazine in 2000 (titled ‘Anti-tumoral action of cannabinoids’).
Over the past 4 years, the MCBT has raised over 350,000€.This money will be used to test the scientists’ research in a clinical trial in early 2017. It will compose of 30 -40 glioma (brain cancer) patients and be administered by GEINO (The Spanish Group of Neuro-oncological Investigation).
