Coconut Grove | Miami, Florida | Where to Eat | Best Restaurants | Kush | Lulu | Havana Harry's
In February 2021 we spent a long weekend visiting Southern Florida and stayed in Coconut Grove. Coconut Grove is an upscale, bustling neighborhood in South Miami filled with shops and spectacular restaurants. We ate at Kush by Spillover, Lulu, Le Pain Quotidien, Panther Coffee, and Havana Harry's just outside of Coconut Grove. We also ventured a little further from Coconut Grove to grab some authentic Cuban quick-bites that better fit our travel plans and schedule. Those included Breadman and El Palacio de los Jugos. We stayed across from Peacock Park at Hotel Arya. This was a great central location for our weekend dining and adventures.
Coconut Grove, or more simply known as The Grove, is the oldest neighborhood in Miami. Locals take pride in it also being one of the greenest and friendliest neighborhoods. Dogs and their owners can be found roaming the streets. And the area is home to many open air restaurants, streetside cafes, and waterfront diners. In non-pandemic times, the Grove can be a center of nightlife frequented by locals, young professionals, tourists, and students from the nearby universities. Shopping, however, is always abundant with open-air malls, street shops and boutiques. For our long weekend, this was a great choice for a home base as we took excursions to the Everglades and the Keys.

In this episode, produced especially for The Welcome Channel, David takes viewers around the historic neighborhood of Coconut Grove in his hometown of Miami, Florida. If you've ever wondered what you can do, see, or eat in this bohemian neighborhood, just watch and learn!
The Grove, as the locals like to call it, is an area known for historic landmarks like the beautiful 1920’s Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, and The Kampong – a beautiful botanical garden where David and his wife got married, and finally The Barnacle State Park. All three are located along the shores of Biscayne Bay.
In the Grove you can keep it as slow or fast-paced as you like. For decades it's been a fantastic place to dine, shop and enjoy the amazing Miami weather. David still enjoys coming here to this day, especially for Sunday brunch. You’ll notice there are less crowds here than in South Beach, which gives it a more relaxed vibe.
Brief History of Coconut Grove
Coconut Grove is Miami’s oldest seaside neighborhood, founded in 1873. More than 140 years later, this bohemian village offers the ideal setting for strolling, shopping, and dining. Just 15 minutes from South Beach and 10 minutes from Downtown Miami, Coconut Grove is known as one of the hippest, most energetic, most inviting corners of South Florida, but it also hides a secret from the past. Follow a narrow path through the hardwood hammocks and you'll come across The Barnacle Historic State Park located on the shores of Biscayne Bay. Established in the 1800s by a worldly group of pioneers, sailors, artists, naturalists, millionaires, and intellectuals, Coconut Grove is Miami's oldest neighborhood and still maintains its historic charm. The Grove offers visitors an enticing mix of shops, boutiques, and lively outdoor cafes set amid a laid-back village by the bay. Monthly events include Fashion + Art + Music Night every first Saturday and free historic bike tours every second Saturday. Also, weekly free yoga classes held at Peacock Park!
Coconut Grove is known for its shady promenades lined with funky shops and restaurants, the Grove packs in a whole lot of charm, history and culture into a relatively little area along Biscayne Bay.
