Bergamo is a city in the alpine Lombardy region of northern Italy, approximately 40 km (25 mi) northeast of Milan, and approximately 30 km (19 mi) from Switzerland, the alpine lakes Como and Iseo, and 70 km (43 mi) from Garda and Maggiore. The Bergamo Alps (Alpi Orobie) begin immediately north of the city.

With a population of approximately 122,000, Bergamo is the fourth-largest city in Lombardy. Bergamo is the seat of the Province of Bergamo. The metropolitan area of Bergamo extends beyond the administrative city limits, spanning over a densely urbanized area with slightly fewer than 500,000 inhabitants. The Bergamo metropolitan area is part of the broader Milan metropolitan area, home to more than eight million people.

The city of Bergamo is composed of an old walled core, known as Città Alta (Upper Town), nestled within a system of hills constituting a regional park, and the modern expansion in the plains below. The upper town is encircled by massive Venetian defensive systems that are a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 9 July 2017.

Places to see in ( Bergamo - Italy ) Cappella Colleoni

Places to see in ( Bergamo - Italy ) Cappella Colleoni

The Cappella Colleoni is a church and mausoleum in Bergamo in northern Italy. Dedicated to the saints Bartholomew, Mark and John the Baptist, it was built between 1472 and 1476 as the personal shrine for the condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni, a member of one of the most outstanding families of the city, and his beloved daughter Medea.

The site chosen was that of the sacristy of the nearby church of Santa Maria Maggiore, which was demolished by Colleoni's soldiers. The design was entrusted to Giovanni Antonio Amadeo, whose plan respected the style of the church, as can be seen from the octagonal tambour of the dome and in the lantern cusp, as well as in the use of polychrome marbles.

The façade is characterized by the use of tarsia and polychrome marble decorations in white, red and black lozenges. Over the main portal is a rose window, flanked by two medallions portraying Julius Caesar and Trajan. The upper part of the basement has nine plaques with reliefs of Biblical stories, and four bas-reliefs with Hercules's deeds. The four pilasters of the windows flanking the portal are surmounted by statues of the Virtues. The upper part of the façade has a loggia in Romanesque style.

The interior includes a square hall and a smaller room housing the high altar. The tomb of Bartolomeo Colleoni (who died on November 2, 1475) is on the wall facing the entrance. It is decorated with reliefs of Episodes from the Life of Christ, statues, heads of lions and an equestrian statue of the condottiere in gilded wood, finished by German masters from Nuremberg in 1501. The whole complex is surrounded by a triumphal arch.

Amadeo himself executed the funerary monument of Medea Colleoni (died March 6, 1470). Located on the left wall, it has a statue of the Deposition from the Cross in high relief. The tomb was transferred here in 1892 from Basella di Urgnano. The presbytery has a high altar sculpted by Bartolomeo Manni in 1676, housing statues of the three saints to whom the chapel is dedicated, John, Mark and Bartholomew, by Pietro Lombardo. The upswept cornice is supported by Solomonic columns. The altar table, to a design by Leopoldo Pollack, is supported by angels carved by Grazioso Rusca.

For centuries it was believed that the condottiere's remains had been buried elsewhere, as the sarcophagus appeared empty. On November 21, 1969, however, they were discovered in Colleoni's tomb in a wooden coffin, hidden under a plaster cover.

Places to see in ( Bergamo - Italy ) Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore

Places to see in ( Bergamo - Italy ) Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore

The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is a major church in the upper town of Bergamo, Northern Italy. The church was founded in 1137 on the site of another church from the 8th century dedicated to St Mary, which had been in turn erected over a Roman temple of the Clemence. The high altar was consecrated in 1185 and in 1187 the presbytery and the transept wings were completed. Due to financial troubles, the works dragged for the whole 13th–14th centuries.

The bell tower was built from 1436 (being completed around the end of the century), while in 1481–1491 a new sacristy added after the old one had been destroyed by Bartolomeo Colleoni to erect his personal mausoleum, the Colleoni Chapel. In 1521, Pietro Isabello finished the south-western portal, also known as Porta della Fontana. The edifice was restored and modified in the 17th century.

The church opens on the square (Piazza Duomo) on its own left side, as the main façade has no entrance, being once united to the Bishops' Palace. The external appearance has largely maintained its Lombard Romanesque origins. The church can be accessed by two entrances by Giovanni da Campione (1353) and by Isabello's Porta della Fontana.

The main apse is crowned by a loggia surmounted by two frieze with geometrical and vegetables patterns, and has blind arcades with semi-columns. The latter's capitals have also vegetable themes, with the exception of one, decorated by Angels with Last Judgement's Trumpets. The transept's apses have a structure similar to the main one.

Notable is Giovanni da Campione's porch in the left transept, which is supported by columns departing from lions in Veronese marble. the arch has a frieze with hunting scenes, while the vault is decorated by polychrome lozenges. A loggia houses statues of St Barbara, St Vincent and St Alexander. At the peak is a Gothic niche by Hans von Fernach (1403), with the Madonna with Child flanked by St Esther and St Grata (1398). also by Giovanni da Campione is the porch of the right transept, with a similar though simpler structure. The columns are supported by lions in white marble. It has reliefs with Christ Crowned by Saints and Birth of the Baptist.
Isabello's Renaissance porch has, in the lunette, a fresco of Mary's Nativity attributed to Andrea Previtali.

The interior has maintained the original Romanesque Greek cross plan, with a nave and two aisles divided by piers and ending with an apse, but the decoration its largely from the 17th century Baroque renovation. On the walls are tapestries, partly executed in Florence (1583–1586) under Alessandro Allori's design, partly of Flemish manufacture, depicting the Life of Mary. Over the tapestry of the Crucifixion (executed in Antwerp on Ludwig van Schoor's cartoons, 1698) is a painting by Luca Giordano, with the Passage of the Red Sea (1691).

Left to the entrance is the sepulchre of Cardinal Guglielmo Longhi, work by Ugo da Campione (1913–1320). On the rear wall are the tomb of the composer Gaetano Donizetti, by Vincenzo Vela (1855) and that of the latter's master Simone Mayr (1852). At the beginning of the left aisle is the Baroque confessional carved by Andrea Fantoni in 1704. A crucifix from the 14th century is on the presbytery's balaustrade.

In the presbytery itself, housing six bronze candelabra from 1597, is a wooden choir designed by Bernardo Zenale and Andrea Previtali. The reliefs with Biblical tales were executed in 1524–1555 on designs by Lorenzo Lotto. They are characterized by a polychrome effect rendered through the use of different wood types. The right transepts has Giottesque frescoes from an unknown artist, with Histories of St Aegidius, The Last Supper and the Tree of Life (1347), partially covered by a 17th-century fresco.

Visiting Clusone: one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, surrounded by the Dolomites

Clusone, in Northern Italy, is a charming little village of about 8000 people that lies on a glacial plateau of the Prealps between the valleys of the Serio and Oglio rivers.

Clusone has been named among the most beautiful villages in Italy!

In addition to getting lost in the narrow alleys of the historic center, with your gaze upwards looking the frescoes of the buildings, don't forget to visit the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, the Town Hall, and the redwoods of Nastro Azzurro Park, among the Monumental Trees of Italy.

Other attractions I suggest you to visit are in the historical center: Fresco of the Danse Macabre and the Church of San Luigi.

Around Clusone I suggest you visit Monte Alto.
At the Magnolini refuge you can taste typical Italian food and enjoy the panorama from a Big Bench.
At the peak you can see Lake Iseo and the Presolana Dolomite group.

Another trip that I recommend is to Monte Alino, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view sitting on another Big Bench.

About typical FOOD, taste polenta with mountain cheese, polenta with stew, casoncelli and chestnuts.

ACCOMMODATION tip: Casa Celeste, Via zuccano 10, Clusone

Fun strudel festival in Clusone, Italy! #travelitaly #italy #italianlandscapes

Clusone is a small town in the Bergamo province of Italy. When I first visited this area, I was taken aback at the friendliness of the locals and how much time, effort, and money they put into preserving their historical heritage and enriching the lives of their residents with various cultural activities. The Strudelone festival is just one small example of la dolce vita in this part of Italy.

Cosa vedere a BERGAMO in un GIORNO

Places to see in ( Bergamo - Italy )

Bergamo is an Italian city northeast of Milan, in the Lombardy region. Its older upper district, called Città Alta, is characterized by cobblestone streets, encircled by Venetian walls and accessible by funicular. It's home to the Duomo di Bergamo, the city cathedral. Also here are the Romanesque Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore and the grand Cappella Colleoni, a chapel with 18th-century frescoes by Tiepolo.

Bergamo is a city in Lombardy, Italy, about 40 km (25 mi) northeast of Milan and 30 km (19 mi) from the lakes Como and Iseo. The foothills of the Bergamo Alps begin immediately north of the town. Bergamo is the seat of the Province of Bergamo. With a population of around 120,000, Bergamo is the fourth-largest city in Lombardy. The metropolitan area of Bergamo extends beyond the administrative city limits.

Bergamo is well connected to several cities in Europe and the Mediterranean through Il Caravaggio International Airport, the third-busiest airport in Italy with 10.5 million passengers in 2015, and the motorway A4 stretching on the axis between Milan, Verona, and Venice. The town has two centres: Città alta (upper city), a hilltop medieval town, surrounded by 16th-century cyclopic defensive walls, and the Città bassa (lower city). The two parts of the town are connected by funicular/cable car, roads, and foot-paths. Parking spaces are very limited in the upper city.

The upper city, surrounded by Venetian walls built in the 16th century, forms the historic centre of Bergamo. Città Alta is an extremely expensive place to live in, with properties being sold for five to twelve thousand euro per square meter. This has numerous places of interest including:

Cittadella (Citadel), built by the Visconti in the mid-14th century.
Piazza Vecchia (old square)
Palazzo della Ragione. This was the seat of the administration of the city in the age of the communes. Currently it houses a selection of paintings from the Accademia Carrara.
Palazzo Nuovo (Biblioteca Civica Angelo Mai). It was designed by Vincenzo Scamozzi in the early 17th century but only completed in 1928.
Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore (Saint Mary Major). The dome has frescoes by Giovanbattista Tiepolo. Noteworthy are the great Crucifix and the tomb of Gaetano Donizetti.
Cappella Colleoni (Colleoni chapel), annexed to Santa Maria Maggiore, it contains the tomb of the condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni.
The Battistero (Baptistry), an elegant octagonal building dating from 1340.
Bergamo Cathedral (Duomo).
Rocca (Castle). It was begun in 1331 on the hill of Sant'Eufemia by William of Castelbarco, vicar of John of Bohemia, and later completed by Azzone Visconti.
San Michele al Pozzo Bianco.
Museo Civico Archeologico (Archaeological Civic Museum) This is housed in the Cittadella.
Museo di Scienze Naturali Enrico Caffi (Caffi Natural Science Museum) This is also housed in the Cittadella.
Orto Botanico di Bergamo Lorenzo Rota (botanical garden).
Città Alta and its surroundings are part of the Parco dei Colli di Bergamo

The lower city is the modern centre of Bergamo. At the end of the 19th century Città Bassa was composed of residential neighborhoods built along the main roads that linked Bergamo to the other cities of Lombardy. The main boroughs were Borgo Palazzo along the road to Brescia, Borgo San Leonardo along the road to Milan and Borgo Santa Caterina along the road to Valle Seriana. The city rapidly expanded during the 20th century. In the first decades, the municipality erected major buildings like the new courthouse and various administrative offices in the lower part of Bergamo in order to create a new center of the city. After World War II many residential buildings were constructed in the lower part of the city which are now divided into several neighborhoods such as Longuelo, Colognola, Malpensata and Boccaleone, Redona and Valtesse among many others. The shopping district developed shortly after, now commonly known as the street the shops are located on Via 20 Settembre. The church Santo Spirito exhibits the altarpiece by Lorenzo Lotto Madonna and Child with Saints. The most relevant sites are:
Pinacoteca dell'Accademia Carrara
Galleria d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art), known as GAMeC.

Bergamo, Italy: Why is the City Surrounded by Huge Walls? (Worldview w/ Captain Kurt)

In this episode of Worldview, Captain Kurt explores Bergamo, Italy, a town near Milan that is surrounded by massive walls. Why were these walls built? In the 1500s, Bergamo was captured by Milan’s arch rival, the Republic of Venice. As these two Italian powers battled each other throughout the Middle Ages, they would capture land, then they would have to protect it. Venice didn’t want to lose Bergamo to Milan, so they built huge walls around the entire city. Venice became a powerful sea power and captured cities all over the region, not just in Italy. The defenses they built were so important to world history that they are now on UNESCO’s List of World Heritage Sites! Learn how these Medieval fighters would propel attacks on their walls and keep invaders out. Walled cities and castles were hard to capture and played an important part of the politics and power all over the area.
