WHAT
Before the Romans, Trent was a Celtic village. It was conquered by the Romans in the late 1st century BC. Romans gave their settlement the name Tridentum as a tribute to the Roman god Neptune. (Actually, the origin of the name is not clear, it could refer to 3 small hills that rise around Trento, called Doss.) Tridentum became an important stop on the Roman road that led from Verona to Innsbruck. In the 16th century, the city was the location of the famous “Council of Trent”. Formerly part of Austria-Hungary empire, it was annexed by Italy in 1919.
With almost 120,000 inhabitants, Trento is one of the largest city.
What to see:
- Duomo (Cathedral of Saint Vigilius) is a Gothic cathedral of the twelfth century, built on top of a late-Roman basilica.
- Palazzo Pretorio, next to the Duomo, dates back to the 12th century, with a bell tower.
- Buonconsiglio Castle includes a museum and the remarkable Torre dell'Aquila.
- Palazzo delle Albere is a Renaissance villa next to the Adige river built around 1550, and now host a modern art museum.
- MUSE is the museum of science and natural history, planned by Renzo Piano and opened in 2013.

But Trento offers a lot of attractions around the city:
Arriving in Trento by car, you will notice vineyards as far as the eye can see; so why don’t visit one of them?
In 40 minutes you can be in Garda lake and in just over an hour you can visit Brenta Dolomites and the village of Madonna di Campiglio (watch my videos on both of them)

Cles (TN): la città in 3 minuti
Cles (o Cliès in noneso) è un comune italiano di 7 166 abitanti della provincia autonoma di #trento in Trentino-Alto Adige. È il capoluogo della Val di Non e si trova a 650 metri di altitudine.
#clés è situato in Val di Non, territorio di cui è il centro amministrativo. A ovest dell'abitato si trovano il Monte di Cles e il Monte Peller (2 319 m s.l.m.), mentre a est c'è il lago di Santa Giustina.
Cles è formato da tre rioni di origine molto antica:
- Pez (Péz), che si trova nei pressi del Dòs de Péz, punto panoramico sulla valle, nel dialetto locale péz significa abete rosso
- Spinazeda, che deriva da spina, un arbusto spinoso che cresceva in quel posto
- Prato, che deriva da pratum, un luogo pianeggiante ed esteso
In epoca romana Cles era un emporium antichissimo, vale a dire il più importante centro delle valli di Non e di Sole, al quale la gente accorreva da tutte le parti per affari, commerci e specialmente per il culto delle divinità pagane. Avvenuta poi, dopo l'anno 400 d.C., la conversione in massa al cristianesimo, Cles continuò a essere centro delle due valli, soprattutto da un punto di vista religioso. In quell'epoca furono abbattuti i monumenti del culto pagano e costruita a Cles la prima chiesa della valle, che per molto tempo servì per tutti i cristiani dei dintorni, dando il nome al paese (il toponimo Cles potrebbe derivare da ecclesia).
Il ritrovamento della “Tavola Clesiana”, emanata dall’Imperatore Tiberio Claudio nel 46 d. C., testimonia il conferimento della cittadinanza romana alle antiche popolazioni delle valli. Una copia dell’editto è esposta al Palazzo Assessorile di Cles.
La posizione geografica di Cles è ideale per chi vuole scoprire le numerose ricchezze della natura e cultura delle valli di Non e di Sole, tra cui le montagne delle #dolomiti di Brenta, dell’Ortles e della Mendola. Il Lago di Santa Giustina offre possibilità per la pratica di sport nautici, dalla vela al canottaggio e al windsurf, e della pesca sportiva.
Cles è praticamente circondata dai frutteti che producono le famose mele della Valle di Non (D.O.P.). E’ uno spettacolo veramente particolare vederli in fioritura tra la fine di aprile e metà maggio. Il Consorzio Melinda, con i suoi oltre 5.000 soci coltivatori, produce ogni anno 300.000 tonnellate di mele: Golden Delicious, Red Delicious e Renetta Canada sono i nomi delle varieta’ più coltivate.

The Castello del Buonconsiglio is the largest and most important monumental complex of the Trentino Alto Adige region. From the thirteenth century until the end of the eighteenth century the residence of the bishops of Trento, it is composed of a series of buildings of different ages, enclosed within a walled enclosure in a slightly elevated position with respect to the city.
Castelvecchio is the oldest nucleus, dominated by a mighty cylindrical tower; the Magno Palazzo is the 16th century extension in the forms of the Italian Renaissance, commissioned by the prince bishop and cardinal Bernardo Cles (1485-1539); at the end of the seventeenth century the Baroque Giunta Albertiana dates back to the same period . At the southern end of the complex is Torre Aquila, which preserves the famous Ciclo dei Mesi , one of the most fascinating pictorial cycles of the profane theme of the late Middle Ages. Above all for the presence of large cycles of frescoes, the interior decorative apparatus, made by the bishops mostly in the late medieval and Renaissance periods, is of extraordinary interest.
After the end of the bishop's principality (1803) the castle was used as a barracks; restored, in 1924 it became the seat of the National Museum and since 1973 it belongs to the Autonomous Province of Trento. Currently it is the main center of a museum system made up of five castles, one of the most evocative and prestigious in the Trentino area: the Castle of Stenico , in the Giudicarie Valleys, Castel Beseno , in the Valle dell'Adige, between Trento and Rovereto, Castel Thun , in Valle di Non and Castel Caldes in Val di Sole
