2023 05 29 POLAND - CIESZYN & POGRZEBIEŃ

Cieszyn, one of the oldest towns in Poland, is situated in the Silesian Voivodship on the Olza River, opposite Český Těšín. The town was divided into two parts, with the left-bank being part of the Czech Republic and known as Český Těšín. Together the towns constitute an important transit centre on the Czech-Polish border, close to the territory of Slovakia, and form the capital of the Cieszyn Silesia Euroregion.
The town came into being in the 10th century as a stronghold built to defend Poland’s southern borders. From around 1290 Cieszyn was the capital of the autonomous Duchy of Cieszyn, a region that later became Cieszyn Silesia. In the 16th century the town was one of the most important centres of trade and commerce, and also a centre of the Reformation movement. After the World War I, Czechoslovakia attacked the Polish part of the region and forced Poland to withdraw from the greater part of the Zaolzie area. Poland recognised the new borders running along the Olza River in 1920; Czechoslovakia got the western section and a part of the Duchy capital known as Český Těšín while Poland got the eastern section of Cieszyn. During World War II Germany annexed the city and renamed it Teschen, and the borders of 1920 were not restored until 1945.

On the way back, we have also stopped in village called Pogrzebien, just to climb viewing tower - 20 metres tall but there is opportunity to see in the distance Beskid Mountains.

CIESZYN Historic Old Town - Cieszyn Stare Miasto - Poland (4K)

CIESZYN - Poland.

Cieszyn is a border town in southern Poland on the east bank of the Olza River, and the administrative seat of Cieszyn County, Silesian Voivodeship. The town has 34,513 inhabitants (as of 2019), and lies opposite Český Těšín in the Czech Republic. Both towns belong to the historical region of Cieszyn Silesia, and formerly as one town composed the capital of the Duchy of Cieszyn. The town is situated on the Olza river, a tributary of the Oder River, which forms the border with the Czech Republic. It is located within the western Silesian Foothills north of the Silesian Beskids and Mt. Czantoria Wielka, a popular ski resort. Cieszyn is the heart of the historical region of Cieszyn Silesia, the southeasternmost part of Upper Silesia. Until the end of World War I in 1918 it was a seat of the Dukes of Teschen.

In 1920 Cieszyn Silesia was divided between the two newly created states of Poland and Czechoslovakia, with the smaller western suburbs of Teschen becoming part of Czechoslovakia as a new town called Český Těšín. The larger part of the town joined Poland as Cieszyn. Three bridges connect the twin towns. After Poland and the Czech Republic joined the European Union and its passport-free Schengen zone, border controls were abolished and residents of both the Polish and Czech part could move freely across the border. The combined population of Polish and Czech parts of the city is 61,201 inhabitants. Cieszyn is the southern terminus of the Polish National road 1 leading to Gdańsk on the Baltic coast.

The town combines both Polish and Old–Austrian peculiarities in the style of its buildings. Because of several major fires and subsequent reconstructions (the last one in the late 18th century), the picturesque old town is sometimes called Little Vienna. The only relic of the ancient castle is a square tower, dating from the 14th century and 11th century romanesque chapel.

Cieszyn (cz. Těšín, niem. Teschen, łac. Tessin) – miasto w południowej Polsce przy granicy z Czechami, w województwie śląskim, siedziba władz powiatu cieszyńskiego.

Dzieje Cieszyna sięgają IX w. i wiążą się z grodem słowiańskiego plemienia Golęszyców. Cieszyn otrzymał prawa miejskie pomiędzy 1217 a 1223 rokiem. Od końca XIII w. było ono centrum Księstwa Cieszyńskiego.

Współczesne administracyjne pojęcie „miasto Cieszyn” odnosi się do prawobrzeżnej części (rzeka Olza), będącego pod względem przestrzennym i społecznym jedną całością, ośrodka miejskiego, którego część lewobrzeżna należy do Czech i nosi oficjalną nazwę Czeski Cieszyn. W przeciwieństwie do Czeskiego Cieszyna, dzielnice prawobrzeżne są dzisiaj jednolite etnicznie – ponad 96% ludności deklaruje narodowość polską. Charakterystyczna jest natomiast różnorodność religijna z wyznaniami rzymskokatolickim i luterańskim jako dominującymi.

Według danych na 31 grudnia 2019 r. polski Cieszyn liczy 32 921 mieszkańców, jego powierzchnia wynosi natomiast 28,61 km². Wspólnie obie części miasta zamieszkiwane są przez 59,5 tys. osób i zajmują 63 km²

CIESZYN - An Interesting Polish Border town

Cieszyn is a town that I have past by in speeding Inter-city trains and each time I have thought that I would like to visit the place. So this year, I made a point of spending several days in Cieszyn and it did turn out to be a good choice.

The legend of the three brothers well in Cieszyn, Poland

According to legend, Cieszyn in Silesia, was founded in 810CE when three sons of a Slav king called Bolko, Leszko and Cieszko, met here after a long pilgrimage. They found the spring that can be seen in this film and were so pleased that they founded the town. The legend goes that the name Cieszyn comes from the verb meaning to be happy which in Polish is cieszyć się or in Czech těšit se.

A more logical explanation is that the name comes from the Slavic name Ciecha or Ciesza either the name of a local ruler or the people who lived there.

This well stands in Three Brothers Street which is close to the main square.

Nonetheless the settlement goes back even further in time than the name and it would appear that people have been living here since the sixth century.
