Welcome to Chinag Rai and A&A Travelling. Chiang Rai is the northernmost major city in Thailand, with a population of about 200,000 people located in Mueang Chiang Rai district. The city is one hour drive from the borders of Laos and Myanmar and two hours drive north of Chiang Mai.
Founded in 1262 as part of the King Lanna Kingdom ( modern day northern Thailand), Chiang Rai was the first capital of King Meng Rai`s principality and today is a perfect destination for travellers looking to slow down the pace, escape the nature, and soak up the charms of Thailands northern city.
HOW TO GET TO CHIANG RAI
The most popular places to visit Chiang Rai from is Bangkok and Chiang Mai.
From Chiang Mai it`s easy to book a bus ticket online and it costs less than 7 euros. The journey takes a little over 3 hours. From Bangkok you can fly to Chiang Rai`s airport for around 30-50 euros and it only takes 1 hour. Or you can book a bus online for 20 euros but the journey will take 13 hours.
GETTING AROUND IN CHIANG RAI
Renting a moped here is convinient, cheap and definitely the best way to explore what the city has to offer. The roads are quite good and not so much traffic. The rental prize is around 200 Thb.
WHAT TO DO IN CHIANG RAI
-Chiang Rai Clocktower
is a popular artwork, and landmark located right on the center of town. The clocktower is the world`s most ornate round-a-about in the world and it was designed by Chalermchai Kosipipat (same artist who decorated the White Temple).
The best time to visit the tower is at 7pm, 8pm, and 9pm each night while the 10 minutes light and music show plays.
-Saturday Night Walking Street Market
Opens every saturday from 04:30 PM to 00:30 AM, located on Thana Lai Road in the city center.
This is the biggest night market we`ve seen outside Bangkok. The stalls around the night market offer a wide range of handmade goods and other typical market type goods such as clothing, food, paintings and live shows.
-Wat Rong Suea Ten (Blue Temple)
This temple was designed by Putha Kabkaen a student of the artist who built the eccentric White Temple. The temple is a fascinating fusion of traditional buddhist values and classic Thai architecture with extremely contemporary design choices.
The Blue Temple is still considered a work in progress despite the official conclusion of the project in 2016.
No entrance fee and it is open from 7 am to 8 am.
-Wat Rong Khun ( White Temple)
This temple is a stunning example of contemporary and traditional Thai architecture. The temple was created by the Thai artist Chalermchai Kosipipat who dedicated his life to the restauration and improvment of the white temple. Hopefully you won`t miss the most stunnig restroom we`ve seen in our entire lives.
Entrance fee is 100 thb for foreigners, and it is open every day from 06:30 am to 06:00 pm.
-Wat Huay Pla Kang ( Big Buddha of Chiang Rai)
The temple is known for its enormus white statue of Guanyin ( 90 meters high), the Chineese Goddess of Mercy, a 9-floor pagoda and a Thai style Buddhist Temple. The temple is mix of Thai Lanna and Chinese styles.
Once inside the Guanyin statue, visitors can take a lift 25 floors up to the top. The walls of the top are covered with white Stucco depictions of Guanyin, mythical creatures and trees and awesome views.
The temple is located eight km north of the center of Chiang Rai City.
Baan Dam Museum (Black House Museum)
This museum is a mixture of traditional northern Thai buildings with unconventional and contemporary architecture created by Thawan Duchanee.
The construction of the museum started in 1976 and it`s still a work on progress. Once the artists home and art studio, the Black House Museum now serve as a showcase for his work and collections.
-Choui Fong Tea Plantation
Has a modern cafe with a terrace overlooking this huge, scenic tea plantation with a gift shop.
-Laongkwamsuk Park and Manorom Coffee
This is a place we definitely recommend if you feel like having a coffe in a relaxing beautiful place by the river.
-Toke-Tong Restaurant
We loved to eat here, the food tasted good and the building has some kind of colonial architecture over it. They also have live music and Thai traditional dancing.

The magnificent history of Siam began in1253 when several small kingdoms in the north of the country united and thus laid the foundation for the first true kingdom of the Thai people. Bangkok, the present metropolis and capital of Thailand, first attained importance at the end of the 18th century under the newly developed Chakri Dynasty when it became their seat of government. The epoch of the Chakri kings still exists today and although the great palace district no longer serves as the king’s residence it is still one of the most popular tourist attractions in Bangkok. Wat Suthat is located in the eastern district of old Angkok and is one of the city’s oldest temples. Construction of the temple began shortly after the coronation of the first Chakri monarch, King Rama The First. Prior to its completion during the reign of King Rama The Third, three other kings were responsible for the creation of the Buddhist sanctuary that covers an area of more than forty thousand square metres. For more than four centuries Ayutthaya was one of the most prosperous royal cities in Indo China prior to the time when the internal power struggles of various rival members of the country’s royal family led to the city’s decline. Wat Mahathat, one of the oldest sanctuaries of the ancient capital, has one of the tallest and most impressive towers in Ayutthaya. King Boromaja The Second had the temple built in honour of his two brothers who had killed each other in a bitter and bloody struggle for the royal throne. Buddhism has always played a vital role in Thailand’s history. It continues to be highly influential to the present day. The remains of the ‘Temple Of The Seven Rows Of Chedis’, the Wat Chedi Ched Thaeo, is the greatest Buddhist monastery in Si Satchanalai. Within its thirty-two stupas are the cremated remains of various members of the kings who ruled over the northern region of Siam.
