One Day in Chrudim, Czech Rebublic

In this video I share the highlights of my visit to Chrudim, a lovely small town in the Czech Republic.

Chrudim is a beautiful small town in eastern Bohemia. It doesn't get too many tourists so it's fun to wander around and check everything out without having to worry about anyone else!

For the one night in Chrudim I stayed at the Residence Arx Hotel. it was reasonably priced, came with breakfast, and was a quick 5-minute walk to the city center.

If you're driving through Eastern Bohemia I definitely recommend stopping in Chrudim. It's a small town so it only takes a few hours to explore. It's totally worth it!

Ahoj! I'm Jen, native Californian, living in Prague, Czech Republic for the past 9 years with my husband and our rescue dog Tobik. One fateful night, we drank a bottle of wine, threw a dart at the map, and bought one-way tickets to move our entire lives to the center of Europe! Every day we learn something new, about Czech people, Czech culture, Czech history, Czech language and how to battle the Czech bureaucracy. Dream Prague started as a place to share what we learned with other foreigners living here.

Happen to stumble onto this charming hotel/cafe/restaurant while I was strolling along on Nový Svět. The hotel looks like a house in a small village and the interior spacing is very well decorated. If you like the orange roofing, red and brown bricks, stones, pottery, metal works and wood beams then this place is for you, too. Situated short strolled distance west from Prague Castle and north of Černín Palace & Loreto. A wonderful picturesque walled village like feel to get away from massive tourists. Stroll along where the locals have a special place in their hearts for this street. Find a cafe or restaurants, relax and enjoy the scenery. Tram #22 & #23 stops near by at Brusnice stop, a block or two north.

One of the most beautiful cities in Europe with great history, culture & architecture. European backyard city where I enjoy returning time & time again.

Walk the Charles Bridge from the 14th Century (started in 1357 & finished 1402), it's the bridge that connects the Old Town (Staré Mesto) to the Lesser Town (Malá Strana). Explore the other bridges to cross from east to west, too. It literally takes less than 2 minutes to cross, unless you still think you are in a dreamland, but that's ok, you're in Prague!

Go visit the Prague Castle before tourists flock there, best time to arrive is 6:00AM-9:00AM or after 5:00PM (17:00), Prague Castle is from the 9th Century, which seated Bohemian kings, Roman Emperors, presidents of Czechoslovakia & presidents of Czech Republic. *Vaclav Havel was the last Czechoslovakian president & the first Czech Republic president* Prague Castle is the largest lived-in ancient castle in the world according to the Guinness Record. Both Prague Castle & Charles Bridge are on the UNESCO World Heritage sites.

*A small tip, Golden Lane will be free after 5PM* Golden Lane built in 16th Century to house the guards but in 17th Century, it housed Goldsmiths. Charming street within the castle wall.

Go to Old Town, figure out how the Astronomical Clock (Prague Orloj) works & what each characters represent. Orloj is from the 1410, third oldest clock in the world & oldest surviving clock in the world. Take a picture with Tyn Church in the background. Have a seat near Jan Hus (John Huss) & his followers statue. A theologian and a philosopher who along with his followers were burnt alive because he was a church reformer. He is considered pre-Protestant & was known 100 years before Martin Luther. Visit the St. Nicholas church in the Old Town, Orthodox church. *There is another St. Nicholas in Lesser Town and is Gothic Parish* One was built by a father & the other was by his son of Dientzenhofer family. Both are Baroque in style. BTW...there are 3 St. Nichiolas.

If you are overwhelmed by the mass tourists have a drink, a dessert & people/boat/geese watch at the Vltava River waterfront (Náplavka). There are boat floating restaurants, street cafes & pub stands along the waterfront.

On each visits, I began to explore further outwards from the comfort zones of Old Town, New Town, Castle District. Don't get me wrong, those are some great historical & beautiful areas but one can not help being curious of other neighborhoods. So, join in & explore the local neighborhoods of Vyšehrad, Vinohrady, Smichov/Anděl.

On 1st visit in '13 , I stayed in Smichov/Andel (southwest of Old Town, across the Vltava River). Back then it was slightly sketchy/grey area. In '19 visit this neighborhood boomed with high level real estate, very upper-middle class area. Visit the local theaters, enjoy the relax of Petrin Park (Petřínské sady), ride a tram, ride a funicular (Angled tram, 3 stops of Újezd, Nebozízek and Petřín).

Another local area called Anděl, felt like local working class neighborhood. So many restaurants, pubs, cafes & a huge mall. Many trams stop along the Nádražní Street.

One 2nd visit, I decided to stay in another local neighborhood called Vinohrady (southeast of Old Town). In the 14h Century this neighborhood was covered with vineyards. During the visit, this area was an upcoming trendy neighborhood with full local pubs, restaurants and cafes popping out near the Peace Square (Náměstí Míru). There is a Subway/Metro stop, literally next to the church & there are plenty of tram lines that stop at the Square. Easter, this is where the locals gather to sell & buy treats, drinks, food & souvenirs for wandering tourists.

Keep the Adventure and Curiosity Alive!

Quarantined for 6 weeks in a small Czech town! ???????? (Svitavy, birthplace of Oskar Schindler)

When the pandemic hit Europe in March of 2020, I was visiting my girlfriend at her family home in Svitavy, a Czech village about 2 hours east of Prague. I expected to stay for two or three days. Little did I know that I was about to get stuck there for over 6 weeks! I returned to Svitavy in April 2021 to tell the story.

Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie - Chrudim

Chrudim
okres Chrudim, Pardubický kraj

Trojlodní bazilikální gotický kostel s románskými základy, upravován v novogotickém slohu. Průčelí dominuje dvojice nárožních hranolových věží vysokých přibližně 62 metrů. V interiéru se mj. nachází gotická křtitelnice z r. 1462, gotické obrazy a sochy, renesanční portrét Ježíše Krista. Hlavní oltář je barokní.

Olomouc, Czech Republic | The Heart of Moravia

Olomouc is just one of the many beautiful small towns throughout the Czech Republic and for anyone visiting Moravia it's somewhere I would definitely recommend checking out.

Despite its beauty and well-preserved old town Olomouc is still a hidden gem and even during the peak of the summer tourist season there weren't too many people wandering around.

The town is actual the historical capital of Moravia and is the 6th largest city in the Czech Republic, although it feels like much more of small town.

Throughout the old town are a wide variety of brightly painted medieval buildings and some of the popular sights include the astronomical clock, the two different squares, the Plague column, and the Saint Wenceslas Cathedral.

Chrudim - A Small Town From a Fairy Tale

Chrudim (Pardubický Kraj) is a small town with less than 25,000 inhabitants, and the administrative centre of the Chrudim District (Okres Chrudim). Because of the number of schools, cultural and social events, Chrudim was best known as Athens of Eastern Bohemia in the second half of the 19th century. On a Sunday Morning, it looks quite deserted, but there are some beautiful old houses around the market place. In one of them, in the Renaissance Mydlářs House south of the Assumption Church, the famous Museum of Puppetry is located since 1972.

Driving around in Prague through some historical/tourist sites

This ride starts right at the Statue of John the Baptist, Maltézské Square which is surrounded by Renaissance houses and it was erected in 1715 during the plague epidemic. As you can see we cut through Maltezske nam street and it becomes Prokopska street. If you are a new driver in Prague, you may get scared thinking that this street is not meant for cars as it's very narrow but rest assured you can drive. This takes us up Karmetlitska street where i make a right turn and immediately you can't miss the picturesque view of St Nicholas Bell Tower yet again. Just be careful when you drive on Kametlitska as the tram or street does not have a separate space. We continue and at the 2:32 minute mark, we pass through a tunnel which is directly underneath the Palace of Oettingen which was built between 1679 and 1687 and currently privately owned by the Oettingen-Spielberg family and the building directly to the left is the St. Thomas Church. The street now becomes Letenska st and right after i exit the tunnel to the left is Luxury Hotel Augustine which is a 5 star rated hotel and from what we've heard a great hotel if you have enough money to spend. A little further up to our right is the Royal Palace which is yet another 5 star rated hotel.

As we arrive at the intersection which is where Letenska Street becomes Klarov st and as we turn left on Klarov St, you will see the Monument to fallen soldiers during World War II and Winged Lion Memorial which you can see at the 5:15 minute mark. We now make a right turn on Nabrezi Edvarda Benese street. At the 6 minute mark is the Prague’s Secret Metro Station: Klarov. At the 6:50 minute mark is with the two pillars is the Cechuv Bridge or Build brdige which is an absolute must see and considered to be one of the top 5 beautiful bridges of Czech Republic. As we pass the Cechuv/guild bridge, you can see the another 5 star rated InterContinental Prague. The cool looking building to our right is the Faculty of Law of the Charles University. We make a left turn on Dvorakovo Nabr street and in case you can't tell you can see the Vltava river on our left. At the 8:25 Mark to our right is the Hospital Na Františku Prague. At the signal light 8:49 Mark is the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic. At the 9 minute mark we go under the stefanikuv bridge. At the 9:53 mark, i make a right turn and the builidng to the left is Czech Republic Department of transportation. At the 10:07 Mark is the spencer Stuart / Praha City Center. Avis rental car is right there.

At the 10:25 Mark, i make a right turn onto starkova street and further up is the entrance to highway. At the 10:35 Mark you will see Hotel Nerkur which is located on the Tesnov street. At the 11:03 mark, i make a right turn on Na Porici street and Yes you see KFC on my left. There are several hotels on this stretch and you can see hotel Hotel Atlantic Prague Old Town. We stopped shortly after to get Pizza.
