Hiking the Via Czechia | Part 1: Jizerské Hory

The Via Czechia is a network of long distance hiking trails that circle and cross the Czech Republic. The network currently includes a total of over 10,000 kilometers of routes, which means almost endless opportunities to explore the Czech landscape, nature, monuments or places of pilgrimage all year round and in various ways.

There are six main trails, and we've opted to hike a part of the Northern trail. This trail connects the most Western and most Eastern point of the Czech Republic (Czechia in short). Why this part? Well, both the Jizerské Hory and the Krkonoše (both mountainranges) are stunningly beautiful with thick forests, amazing waterfalls and formidable rock formations. This area is also relatively well connected to Prague, which means getting there is not much of a hassle.

We hiked for five days, of which three in the Jizerske Hory (or Iron Mountains), and the final two in the Krkonoše (named after the legendary giant Krkonoš). The route was well maintained, mostly running through lush forests and hilly meadows. However, don't let the distances fool you, some parts are pretty strenuous with steep climbs and at some parts strairways over huge boulders and rocks.

All trails of the Via Czechia, including gps-data and maps, can be found on The accomodations we stayed at can all be found on booking.com and all of them were prefectly fine.

This was our itinerary:

Day 1: Chrastava to Hejnice (25 km)
Day 2: Hejnice to Jizerka (26 km)
Day 3: Jizerka to Harrachov (23 km)
Day 4: Harrachov to Labská Bouda (16 km)
Day 5: Labská Bouda tot Lucni Bouda (15 km)

Along the route there are places to get drinks and some food, so you're not completely out on your own. Do bear in mind that Labská Bouda and Lucni Bouda are hotels in the middle of nowhere, so there are no other options to stay.

I hope you'll enjoy these video's as much as we did hiking this trail. It truly was a great experience and proved yet again that the Czech Republic/Czechia is a great place to enjoy medieval castles and towns, great outdoor activities and naturally the famous Czech beer (which has an excellent price to quality ratio... ;)

Journey to the Top of Vitkov Hill | Prague

Explore along with me in the journey to the Top of Vitkov Hill. When I put it like that it sounds like a glorious adventure...but that was not the case.

Unfortunately the weather was not great once again and so I only was able to stay in Prague. I always wanted to visit Vitkov Hill but never actually did even after many years that I am in Prague for. So I decided to finally go there and take you guys along for the small trip.

Now the end result is not so great as I hoped so it actually did become a rather monotone experience but non the less I still hope you will enjoy the trip.

I am still playing around with the camera and slowly on find my sort of connection with it. As the restrictions here in the Czech Republic slowly seem to get lifted it brings better opportunities, meaning more travel and more fun videos, however for some of my ideas most of the restrictions should be lifted but in the meantime I will try to give you at least a nice view of the lovely city that is Prague.

Trains Coupling in Czech Republic | České Dráhy

Bringing you few videos of trains connecting (Coupling) and passing through level crossing in Czech Republic in 2020. The main train company in Czech in called České Dráhy.

Visit the Grand Budapest Hotel in Görlitz!

: You can visit the Grand Budapest Hotel in Görliwood, aka Görlitz (well, the film set, anyway) with us now!

Görlitz remained almost undamaged during the Second World War and with its 4000 or so historical buildings spanning 500 years it provides a periodic atmosphere and a lot of inspiration for many filmmakers. We travelled to Görliwood to see what the attraction is, and to check out the locations for the many films shot in the atmospheric town.

You're not guaranteed to meet film stars if you go there, but there's a good chance, as it's been a favourite location for many films. If you'd been there in 2012-3 you might have bumped into Bill Murray buying a bratwurst or Ralph Fiennes and Willem Defoe enjoying a quiet drink, as Wes Anderson was shooting his Oscar-winning Grand Budapest Hotel around the town, but especially in the Art Nouveau Görlitzer Warenhaus Department Store.

The department store is deserted now (although apparently there are plans to reopen it soon) but we managed to get inside and explore. It was quite a trip to wander around the former film set, working out where the various scenes took place!

Well, it may not look like much now, but the 100 year old Görlitzer Warenhaus - that's a department store - was in fact the inside of the Grand Hotel Budapest in the film.
And although it's shut and deserted, we're going inside!

The Warenhaus last operated as a department store in 2009, when its owners went bankrupt. Since then, it's been used a few times in films, most notably as the interior of the Grand Budapest Hotel in the 2013 film.

After that, it's basically been empty, except for the occasional tourist or special interest group that have been shown round.

There are actually plans to open it as a department store once again, quite detailed ones. However, it has been delayed for a few years, now 2017, maybe 2018 - let's hope that they make it!

Now here's a shot of the main staircase from the second level.
Look at that detail on the banisters. Imagine walking down here in the old days. Quite resplendent, really.

Here you see the pillars on the top level. There's quite a lot of detail on there, and look at those three characters up there at the top; I'm not sure who they're supposed to be.

Now let's have a look at the beautiful Art Deco ceiling, which was restored in 1985.

If you look carefully here, you can see the dates and in fact the names, of the people involved in the restoration that have been put into the glass. The special technique which was employed is characterised by the use of enamel colour which is baked into the material at a temperature of 600°C, causing an effect as in a graphic.

Well, here we are on the top level, behind all those pillars.
Look at the detail along this. Quite spectacular, really; crude, but effective in a kind of way.
Anyway, we'll look round here. This is where the offices of the film people involved in the Grand Budapest Hotel were originally.

We'll look over, down into the main area, and that magnificent Art Deco roof. All three levels, and the chandeliers. They're not actually the original chandeliers, they were replaced in mid 1990.
And here's another shot of that magnificent, almost M.C. Escher-type staircase!

Well, here we are on the main staircase. It's a bit dodgy, I'll try and walk down. It's not Steadycam, but there you are, you can't have everything! A bit lumpy, I'll try and do better next time...

Helen's enjoying the scene, anyway.
And the chandeliers; magnificent, really.

Vyrazte v těchto parných dnech někam do přírody.

The rock town of Tiské stěny is located on the southern edge of the Krušné hory fault, in the western promontory of the Elbe Sandstone Protected Landscape Area, in the Czech republic. Tiské stěny were formed about 85-100 million years ago on the seabed. Gradually, several layers of sandy sediments were deposited here, sandstones were formed by their subsequent consolidation. Rock towns and rock towers are then the result of the erosive activity of wind, sun and rain. Erosion activity began to reshape the landscape after the retreat of the sea. The result of a long development is a rock town with countless joints, fissures, cavities, niches and tunnels.
