China series: Explore Inner Mongolia - The boundary and the grassland

Last summer, I went to Inner Mongolia in China. It is a place with lots of grasslands and the livestock industry there is thriving. Nomadic population still exists and the government tries to encourage more youngsters to join the Nomadic lifestyle with some beneficial policies. One of the highlights in the place is the Sino-Mongolian cross-border. Over the bridge (there is a huge green fence with words saying keep away at the entrance of the bridge), you can see the lands of Mongolia, the only landlocked country in East Asia.

The Sino-Mongolian cross-border tourism based on the Arxan-Songbeir Port was set up in September 2014. The launch of the tourism development there was regarded as a celebration of the diplomatic relation established between China and Mongolia.

Visitors love to take pictures under the gateway of China in the Arxan Port. The enormous gate showcasing the words “People's Republic of China” in sharp red. With a national emblem on top, the gate looks preeminent in the vast expanse of grasslands.

Inner Mongolia Trip: Part 1

In 2019 June we visited Inner Mongolia, autonomous region of China. From the capital Beijing it took 10 hours by bus (depends on traffic). Its roughly 500 km from Beijing to Hohhot City, Capital of Inner Mongolia autonomous region. This video is mostly about horse riding and the experience we had there in the grasslands. Grasslands is a bit far from the capital hohhot and it is a very rural area where there is no proper roads, facilities and services like hospitals and schools. The local people we met there was mostly nomads. And the resort we stayed for one night were the people who was doing business in that area.
Part 2 will be coming soon...

Steam to the Gobi Desert - English • Great Railways

China’s railways were the world's last great bastion of steam. New routes in a rapidly expanding network had priority for modern traction, leaving existing lines to continue with steam traction for decades. This programme takes us on a 1991 rail journey from the sole surviving standard gauge steam locomotive factory, past the Great Wall of China and through the wilds of inner Mongolia to the edge of the Gobi desert. The famous QJ 2-10-2 is filmed on express passenger work in stunning mountain scenery with a dramatic cab ride, as well as double-heading heavy freights on the horseshoe curves beyond Zhongwei en route to China’s Far West.
Other classic types featured are YJ 2-6-2 at Baotou steel works, plus JF 2-8-2 and SY 2-8-2 on branch line and coal mine service. A rare archive clip shows an ex-USSR FD Class 2-10-2 filmed inside the great Yangtze bridge. In all, a fascinating portrait of a vanished era.

JOURNEY TO THE GOBI | Gobi Desert, Mongolia

We have officially left Ulaanbaatar and headed into the Gobi.
It didn't take long to see all the animals that you'd expect to see in Mongolia - horses, camels, cows, sheep. We even saw a Golden Eagle from the car. We stopped by Choir Monastery, Baga Gadriin Chuluu, and hiking some of the little mountains surrounding our ger camp. We also went to Yolyn Am in the Gurvan Saikhan Mountains which was one of the most beautiful places I've seen.

For those interested, this video would be day 3-5 on the Nomadic Mongolia tour with G Adventures.

Much love and happy travels

The astonishing granitic formations of Baga Gazariin Chuluu, ”stone of the little place”, are located in the northwest of the province of Dundgovi, in the heart of the steppe, 250 km (155,34 miles) towards south of Ulaanbaatar, in the sum of Delgertsogt. At a height of 1751 metres (1,09 mile), they form a granite canyon erected in the heart of the steppe. The erosion polished the rock faces of the cliffs. Some of the lateral entries of the canyon are not very accessible, but most of them permit to enter and to make wonderful hikes in this rocky maze. You may manage to see on the rock the inscriptions written by two venerated monks who lived there in the 19th century.

We can visit on the site the ruins of an old temple dating from the 17th century. We can see there a deep narrow hole. The stagnating rainwater could treat the ocular illnesses. A little ladle has been put on the rock for the people to wash their eyes with the sacred water.
