Kazan Travel Guide - A Russian Fantastic Experience

Kazan Travel Guide - A Russian Fantastic Experience

Kazan is the capital of Russia's republic of Tatarstan and the center of the world Tatar culture. With a population of about 1.3 million, a rich history, deep culture and strong economic influence, thus taking the title from Nizhny Novgorod. By many measures, Kazan has one of the highest standards of living in Russia, following after Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Kazan has long been a focal point of higher education in Russia. It remains a university city, with some of Russia's top universities including Kazan Federal University (KFU - formerly Kazan State University, TGGPU and the Kazan Finance Institute), Kazan State Technological University (KGTU), Kazan State Technical University (KAI), and KazanState Power Engineering University. Many foreign students study in Kazan, adding diversity to the city's tolerant.

Kazan peacefully blends Muslim and Christian cultures. There are also many other religions represented in Kazan. For example, in the city center there are synagogue and new catholic church. This vibrant city with over 1000 years of history is an excellent travel destination, and the number of tourists visiting is rapidly increasing every year.

Much of the city center is walkable, and the main attractions for tourists (the Kremlin and Bauman Street) are only for pedestrian traffic. Public buses are abundant and cheap, but one must have some knowledge of Russian to read the signs or ask where the buses are headed. Bus system maps are apparently hard to come by. Taxis are available and operate mostly an on-call service, rather than plying the streets for fares. They also congregate at a few taxi stands in predictable places such as the train station.

Kazan celebrated its 1000-year anniversary in 2005, for which the city got a major facelift. Visitors today will be able to see many of the reconstructed or newly-constructed sites from the anniversary celebration. Kazan offers a lot of various events you can visit during your stay here - international opera and ballet festival, different types of music festivals, popular singers concerts and many other interesting things to do.Cirque du Soleil regurlary brings its shows to Kazan. And a must-see event in Tatarstan is a national holiday Sabantuy - tatar summer festival, which is celebrated in the beginning of June.

Baumana Street has the largest collection of restaurants, cafes, and bars in the city. They range from acceptable to tourist traps. The city has a citadel (Russian: кремль, tr. kreml', or sometimes Tatar: kirman), which was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000. Major monuments in the Kremlin are the five-domed, six-columned Annunciation Cathedral (1561–62) and the mysterious, formerly leaning Söyembikä Tower, named after the last queen of Kazan and regarded as the city's most conspicuous landmark.

Also of interest are the towers and walls, erected in the 16th and 17th centuries but later reconstructed; the Qol-Şarif Mosque, which has been rebuilt inside the citadel; remains of the Saviour Monastery (a 16th-century cathedral demolished by the Bolsheviks) with the Spasskaya Tower; and the Governor's House (1843–53), designed by Konstantin Thon, now the Palace of the President of Tatarstan. Next door, the ornate baroque Sts-Peter-and-Paul's Cathedral on Qawi Nacmi Street and Marcani Mosque on Qayum Nasiri Street date back to the 18th century.

THE SIGHT & THE SOUND 4/10 : Flight onboard IL-14 147001640 from Vatulino (UUMW) to Orlovka (UUTO)

Daniel’s Travel Vlog

FLIGHT #4/10 IL-14 147001640 VATULINO (UUMW) - ORLOVKA (UUTO), JUNE 11, 2016

This video has been remastered and significantly improved in Sight & Sound and replaces the initial version, published in 2016.

This video series shows the happy faces of 28 invited aviation enthusiasts from all over the world on their very first flight experience onboard Ilyushin 14 in 2016.

This flight is the fourth of total 10 flights onboard IL-14 returning back from Vatulino to Orlovka after thrilling Air-to-Air manoeuvers with Rossiya DOSAAF LET L-410 RF-94590 and other stunts, only possible in Russia.

Spending a whole weekend claiming the complete Orlovka Airfield, many of us experienced their most awesome experience in lifetime.

The weather changed from torrential rain showers to bright sunshine within minutes, offering unlimited challenge for the demanding photographer and videographer.

This whole weekend will remain in our memories forever.

We thank our most enthusiastic hosts, all friends and family members from Albatros Aero - the - IL-14 Restoration Team - with Papa Andrey and Baby Mansur.

History of Ilyushin 14T Serial Number 147001640 “Penguin”

Airframe 147001640 was manufactured at the Engineering Plant 30 “Znamya Truda / Banner of Labour” in Moscow-Khodynka on September 27, 1957 and delivered to the Soviet Air Force with the Military Markings “23” Red.

In 1974, “23” was modified to operate as a flying laboratory for the Soviet Navy, where she served until 1984 and was retired 1987.

Her second life began, when Oleg Lyakishev, Igor Volk and Georgy Nikolaev started a restoration project in 1993, registering her 01114 ФЛА РФ (FLA RF).

By 1995, 147001640 was back in the air again, flying in the region of St. Petersburg.

In 2004, 147001640 was repainted with the characteristic red Polar livery and nicknamed “Penguin”.

The registration CCCP-91612 painted on the fuselage has been used in the film “Разрешите взлёт! (Grant permission for take-off!) and is fake.

The owners failed to legalize 147001640 by registering her RA-1114K, because changes in the legislation took place.

147001640 was never registered in the Russian Civil Registry and was stored for seven years at Myachkovo Airfield without any flying activity, facing an uncertain future.

Her third life began, when a team headed by Andrey Ivanov and Vladimir Lisnyak concluded an agreement with the owners and started repair works in November, 2011 to be completed by the end of Summer, 2012.

Disputes with the management of Myachkovo Airfield forced the owners to remove “Penguin” from Myachkovo and transfer her to Stupino Airfield to complete the restoration.

After restoration, “Penguin” was relocated to Orlovka Airfield in the Tver region, North West of Moscow.

Andrey Ivanov and Vladimir Lisnyak shared the ownership of “Penguin” with the previous owners and fully own the 2nd IL-14 with the serial number 147001647, also known as “Blue Dream” and later “Dmitry Sukharev” in honor of the Pilot killed in a tragic accident, while performing a display flight of AN-2, RA-35171 on September 2, 2017 during an airshow in Chornoye, Moscow Region.

Ongoing disputes with the owner of Orlovka Airfield forced the team to relocate the entire fleet in 2018 to Oreshkovo Airfield, some 180 km South West of Moscow, close to the City of Kaluga.

Both IL-14 are reported grounded at Oreshkovo since 2019 and the team is working to solve the ongoing technical problems.

In Russia, the restoration of Historic Aircraft back to Airworthiness needs to be kept on a low profile to avoid legal consequences for the owners, because neither the State nor private institutions are interested to support a revival of Soviet Aviation History.

Despite these difficulties, the “IL-14 Restoration Team” and their supporters are driven by their dream to bring the IL-14 and other milestones of Soviet Aviation History back to life again.

This video is dedicated to the memory of Dmitry Evgenyevich Sukharev.

THE SIGHT & THE SOUND 8/10 : Flight onboard IL-14 147001640 from Orlovka (UUTO) to Orlovka (UUTO)

Daniel’s Travel Vlog

FLIGHT #8/10 IL-14 147001640 ORLOVKA (UUTO) - ORLOVKA (UUTO), JUNE 12, 2016

This video has been remastered and significantly improved in Sight & Sound and replaces the initial version, published in 2016.

This video series shows the happy faces of 28 invited aviation enthusiasts from all over the world on their very first flight experience onboard Ilyushin 14 in 2016.

This flight is number eight of total 10 flights, and the first flight on the second flying day in adverse weather conditions, changing from tropical rain showers to bright sunshine within minutes offering unlimited challenge to the photographer and videographer.

Spending a whole weekend claiming the complete Orlovka Airfield, many of us experienced their most awesome experience in lifetime.

These are most likely some of the very first video footages of the Ilyushin 14 on Youtube, filmed on the ground and in the air.

Invited to an impressive airshow at the private airfield Orlovka and enjoying an unmatched hospitality, I travelled to Moscow mid of August, 2015 to sample one of the very first flights on board the legendary Ilyushin IL-14T in a display flight at the Orlovka airshow, testing the IL-14 up to her limits.

I have published the story of this unforgettable weekend in the February edition of Jetstream in 2016, which can be read at the end of this video.

Here is the history of this remarkable plane and a remarkable restoration crew who brought her back to life once again, which is most unusual.
