Inside Honduran city where violence reigns to find its other story | Choloma, Honduras

Choloma is a Honduran city where violence reigns, according to mass media. It has the third highest homicide rate in the country and businesses do not invest there due to extortion and crime. Due to security concerns, many Hondurans told me not to walk its streets.

But is there another side to the story? Is there more to Choloma? What is life really like for those who live and work there? How do the people of Choloma receive visitors? What is it really like to walk its streets? I explore its downtown area, street markets, “dangerous” neighborhoods, and Ticamaya lagoon to find out in this two-part series.

Inside the most dangerous neighborhood in Honduras to find its other story | Rivera Hernandez, SPS

During the 2010s, the Rivera Hernandez neighborhood of San Pedro Sula was considered the most dangerous neighborhood in Honduras. Six street gangs fought for territory and carried out massacres in broad daylight. Hundreds of families left the area due to threats and extortions, leaving behind “ghost towns” within Rivera.

Instead of forming my opinion of the neighborhood based on social media, mass media, or stigmas, I walk its streets, talk to the locals, try street foods, ride on a bus, visit community projects, and see how the “feared” neighborhood has evolved over the years to get a different side of the story.

Hiking in Honduras - Dangerous or safe?

I hike up the Merendon Mountains in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, to find out if the hiking trail is safe, dangerous, or recommendable. The Merendon bioreserves is home to 43 villages and the Cusuco National Park.

The trail up to the Coca Cola sign is 3.5km long. More than 270 bird species can be found in the area.

Here is the link to the article about the MS-13 (Mara Salvatrucha) narco lab found in the jungles of El Merendon, San Pedro Sula:

A Tourist's Guide to Copan, Honduras

I set off from San Salvador at 4.30am, driving to the Guatemalan border, stopping off at the El Salvadorian town of Santa Ana before crossing over. Then after two hours of driving across the pot-holed roads of Guatemala, we finally reach the border with Honduras.

Then we get to see the Copan ruins, as well as visiting the nearby town.

A long day, but well worth it.

Selling BALEADAS on the streets of Honduras for 1 day (part 2 of 2) ????????????????

I spend an entire day working at the oldest baleada stand in El Progreso, Honduras. The baleada (a kind of burrito with beans, eggs, and cheese) is the most famous national food of Honduras. In episode 2 of 2, I hit the streets to ask random customers to rate my baleadas from a 1-10. I face countless challenges, racists, people who refuse to try my baleadas, and even forget an important ingredient. However, through teamwork and unexpected helpers, we move forward with our baleadas.

Part 1 of 2:

Here is the map to find Martha's baleada stand:

Honduras Drone_San Pedro Sula, 2019 | HD Stock Drone Video

Before the arrival of the Spanish, the Sula Valley was home to approximately 50,000 native inhabitants. The area that is home to the modern city served as a local trade hub for the Mayan and Aztec civilizations. The Spanish conquest brought about a demographic collapse from which the native population would never recover.

On 27 June 1536, Don Pedro de Alvarado founded a Spanish town beside the Indian settlement of Choloma, with the name of Villa de Señor San Pedro de Puerto Caballos (modern San Pedro Sula). The new town had 35 Spanish citizens, and Alvarado allocated 200 of his slaves to help build the new town and work the surrounding fields. He sent out expeditions into outlying regions to secure the new town, extend the area of Spanish domination, and commandeer supplies. Alvarado annulled all encomienda rights established in the area under Andres de Cerezeda, and reassigned the villages to the citizens of San Pedro.

The new settlement barely survived the colonial period. In 1601, the Spanish government declared Santo Tomás as the official port for the Central American colonies; this move diverted exports from Puerto Cortés and resulted in an economic decline that would last through the XVII century. Additionally, San Pedro Sula was left exposed to raids by pirates and French, Dutch, and English mercenaries. By the mid-18th century, the Spanish government decided to build a number of coastal fortresses to curb English attacks. One of these fortresses, the Fortaleza de San Fernando, was built in Omoa, less than 50 miles from San Pedro Sula. The subsequent increase in trade supported an increase in population from 70 inhabitants in 1714 to 357 in 1789.

Post-independence San Pedro Sula remained an impoverished village, dependent on trade between Omoa and the country's interior. In 1875, Frank Frye, the American consul in the Bay Islands, reported a population of 1200. The city benefitted from the growth of the banana trade in the 1870s and 1880s and formed a close relationship with US-based shipper and railroad entrepreneur Samuel Zemurray's Cuyamel Fruit Company, and the construction of the Interoceanic Railroad between 1869 and 1874 which connected the city to the coast at Puerto Cortés. Zemurray worked closely with local elites who invested in subsidiary enterprises and thus shaped the way politically for Cuyamel to establish itself and pay very few taxes.

How safe is Honduras?

How safe is Honduras?
There is a high level of violent crime in Honduras, and the country has one of the highest homicide rates in the world. ... Although most criminals do not target tourists, some travellers have been victims of crime in major cities and in areas frequented by tourists, especially at night.

Entering Honduran tent community to search for missing 10yo girl

Joselin and her friends ended up in different shelters after Hurricane Eta and Iota devastated their community. Joselin ended up at the Villa Soleada Hurricane Shelter. Her best friend, Jenifer, ended up at a tent community set up along the highway. When Joselin visited her community, she felt worried for Jenifer and wanted to find her. We spent the afternoon searching.

One day as a construction worker in Honduras ????????

What is it like to work as a construction worker in Honduras? How difficult is it to mix concrete by hand and carry 100 pound bags of cement? What do they eat throughout the day to stay fueled? What happens when the water system fails in the community? I find out as I spend an entire day with the Villa Soleada construction crew to build a middle school in Tela, Atlántida.

In this video, you will also get to meet the students, parents, and teachers of the Zenobia Rodas school.
