Places to see in ( Chioggia - Italy )
Chioggia is a seaside town south of Venice, Italy. Traversed by the Corso del Popolo thoroughfare, its historic area has canals and narrow alleys. The Torre dell’Orologio S. Andrea is a Romanesque watchtower with a medieval clock. The Museum of Adriatic Zoology Giuseppe Olivi includes a display on local fishing traditions. On an island to the east are wide Sottomarina beach and Forte San Felice, a 14th-century fort.
Chioggia is an unpretentious fishing town at the southern end of the Venetian lagoon. Like Venice it is built around canals and boats, but otherwise it is very different and makes an interesting excursion from Venice.
Chioggia is in the Veneto region of Italy, a medium-sized fishing port just inside the Venetian lagoon with easy access to the Adriatic. It can be reached by public transport from Venice and makes an unusual day-trip destination. It has several picturesque spots and a slower, more ordinary, pace of life than Venice. The town's morning fish-market is a popular sight, and its seafood restaurants are highly-praised. Chioggia fancies itself as a 'little Venice', but apart from one or two imposing buildings and churches, it is more like an image of what Venice might be had it never discovered the splendid riches of trade.
The historical part of Chioggia is on an island in the lagoon. It's separated from the sea by the lagoon's southernmost rim, a strip of land which is built over with a modern seaside town called Sottomarina. Chioggia's geography is simple: one wide central street, Corso del Popolo, runs the length of the island from north to south. Parallel to this, a block to the east, is a picturesque canal called the Vena. Side-streets run neatly off at right angles, although nearly all the town's most interesting tourist sights lie on the main Corso.
Chioggia has two museums, several interesting churches and a few fine works of art. Opening hours of the museums are restricted, while churches close at lunchtime and for the early afternoon, so plan carefully if you are counting on visiting them. There are not a lot of vital sights, and if you're escaping Venice for the day, it may be enough to be away from that city's bustle, to potter along the pedestrianised stretches of street and maybe sample the seafood for which Chioggia is renowned.
Leaving Piazzetta Vigo over the white marble bridge to the east, guarded by stone lions, you can pause to enjoy appealing views along the Vena canal, lined with fishing boats. Continuing straight on from the bridge you'll come to the Chiesa di San Domenico, one of the only tourist sights not on the main street. The church sits on its own little island, and contains one of Chioggia's greatest treasures: Vittore Carpaccio's St. Paul, his last recorded painting. There are also works by Tintoretto and Bassano, and a venerated wooden crucifix (the oldest in the world the sacristan informed us with pride). Through a grille in the church you can see a collection of local ex-voto images (read on for more about these).
Returning to Corso del Popolo, the tourist can potter onwards through town, past cafes and restaurants with tempting outside tables. The street's an attractive one, with a few interesting buildings and several shops which seem to be in a time warp.
The next interesting church is the Chiesa di San Giacomo Apostolo. The building and its decoration are fruits of an eighteenth-century redesign. Inside, the main altar contains an icon commemorating the appearance of the Virgin Mary to a local peasant in 1508

About Venezia :
Venice is a city in northeastern Italy and the capital of the Veneto region. It is built on a group of 118 small islands that are separated by expanses of open water and by canals; portions of the city are linked by over 400 bridges.
The islands are in the shallow Venetian Lagoon, an enclosed bay lying between the mouths of the Po and the Piave rivers (more exactly between the Brenta and the Sile). In 2020, around 258,685 people resided in greater Venice or the Comune di Venezia, of whom around 51,000 live in the historical island city of Venice (centro storico) and the rest on the mainland (terraferma). Together with the cities of Padua and Treviso, Venice is included in the Padua-Treviso-Venice Metropolitan Area (PATREVE), which is considered a statistical metropolitan area, with a total population of 2.6 million.
The city was historically the capital of the Republic of Venice for almost a millennium, from 810 to 1797. It was a major financial and maritime power during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and a staging area for the Crusades and the Battle of Lepanto, as well as an important centre of commerce—especially silk, grain, and spice, and of art from the 13th century to the end of the 17th. The city-state of Venice is considered to have been the first real international financial centre, emerging in the 9th century and reaching its greatest prominence in the 14th century.
This made Venice a wealthy city throughout most of its history.
For centuries Venice possessed numerous territories along the Adriatic Sea and within the Italian peninsula, leaving a significant impact on the architecture and culture that can still be seen today.
Venice has been known as La Dominante, La Serenissima, Queen of the Adriatic, City of Water, City of Masks, City of Bridges, The Floating City, and City of Canals. The lagoon and the historic parts of the city within the lagoon were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, covering an area of 70,176.4 hectares (173,410 acres).
In view of the fact that Venice and its lagoon are under constant threat in terms of their ecology and the safeguarding of the cultural heritage, Venice's UNESCO listing has been under constant examination by UNESCO.
In the 21st century, Venice remains a very popular tourist destination, a major cultural centre, and has been ranked many times the most beautiful city in the world.
It has been described by The Times as one of Europe's most romantic cities and by The New York Times as undoubtedly the most beautiful city built by man. However, the city faces challenges including an excessive number of tourists, pollution, tide peaks and cruise ships sailing too close to buildings.
The city is situated on a group of 118 small islands that are separated by canals and linked by bridges. The historic center of Venice is divided into six districts, or sestieri, which are named Cannaregio, Castello, Dorsoduro, San Marco, San Polo, and Santa Croce.
Venice sits atop alluvial silt washed into the sea by the rivers flowing eastward from the alps across the Veneto plain, with the silt being stretched into long banks, or lidi, by the action of the current flowing around the head of the Adriatic Sea from east to west.
Between autumn and early spring, the city is often threatened by flood tides pushing in from the Adriatic.
Tourism has been a major part of the Venetian economy since the 18th century, when Venice—with its beautiful cityscape, uniqueness, and rich musical and artistic cultural heritage—was a stop on the Grand Tour.

The city is situated on a small island at the southern entrance to the Venetian Lagoon, about 25 kilometers south of Venice.
The name of the city was changed frequently to Clodia, Cluza, Clugia, Chiozza and Chioggia. The oldest documents mentioning Chioggia date back to the 6th century AD, when it was part of the Byzantine Empire. Chioggia was destroyed by Italy's King Pippin in the 9th century, but rebuilt around a new salt pan industry. In the Middle Ages, Chioggia proper was known as Clugia major. Free commune and episcopal capital from 1110, later played an important role in the so-called the war of Chioggia between Genoa and Venice, conquered by Genoa in 1378 and finally by Venice in June 1380. Although the city remained largely autonomous, it was always subordinate to Venice from then on. On March 14, 1381, Chioggia entered into an alliance with Zadar and Trogir against Venice, and Chioggia was finally better protected by Venice in 1412, as Šibenik became the headquarters of the main customs office in 1412 and the seat of the salt consumer office with a monopoly on salt trade in Chioggi and all over the Adriatic Sea.

In this video, we'll share a trip to Chioggia and Sottomarina beach in beautiful Italy, Veneto.
If you're planning a trip to Venice and want to explore beaches and canals,Chioggia and Sottomarina are the perfect place to go!
Chioggia (pronounced [ˈkjɔddʒa]) is a small town on the Adriatic sea coast of Italy. It is older than Venice and just like it, it is:
criss-crossed by canals;
located on a group of small islands; and
connected to the mainland by causeways.
When the sun is shining and the skies are blue, it is a great place to go to in order to relax, take in the local way of life, explore the fish markets, take pictures of the photogenic clotheslines suspended between the colourful tall houses, spend some time on the beach and eat your weight in seafood and ice-cream.
Sounds good?! I thought so.
While Venice is suffocated by an ever increasing wave of visitors and encroaching souvenir shops, about an hour and a quarter away, at the Southern entrance of the Venetian Lagoon, lies Chioggia – a fishing port which has managed to preserve its authentic feel.
The canals, the narrow streets and the architecture will make you feel like you have hardly left Venice at all, but you will be surprised by how quiet and calm everything seems to be. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the presence of thousands of people from all over the world, in Chioggia you can take it slowly and observe the locals at what they have been doing for centuries: fishing, lacemaking and seafood selling, cooking and eating.
Being one of the biggest and oldest fishing ports in Italy and operating the biggest number of fishing boats in the country, you can expect Chioggia to have a pretty good fish market.
In fact, it has two – a wholesale and a retail one. The wholesale fish market (called Mercato Itico) is across the large canal San Domenico and occupies 11 000 square meters, 5 000 of which are taken by a fancy pavilion built in 1960. The boats moor right next to it and you can see the crates with fish being unloaded under the attentive glare of the many seagulls. There are also large facilities behind the market where fish from all over Italy and the world is handled, stored and processed.
The retail market – called Pescheria – is more centrally located and you will find it between the Piazza and the Vena canal. It has a beautifully sculpted main entrance (carved by the Paduan Amleto Sartori), huge red awnings and it houses about 30 large stalls. You can find all sorts of fish and seafood there – from anchovies to sea bass and then some more. It is an unmissable sight, but make sure that you visit it as soon as you reach Chioggia, as it shuts in the early afternoon.
Many restaurants in town serve beautifully cooked seafood. Walk along the San Domenico canal to see the deep sea fishing boats on one side and a line of eateries on the other, where you can glimpse through the windows into their kitchens and see the chef preparing the most delicious fish dishes. For an outstanding plate of seafood, try also the restaurants around the retail fish market. For ideas what to order, have a look at this list of typical for Chioggia food.
Every year Chioggia organises some fun and fabulous events showcasing its traditions and its unique culture.
Sottomarina now enjoys a beach which extends beyond the mouth of the Brenta, up until the mouth of the Adige, in Isolaverde, renowned for its sandy terrain which is particularly well-suited for vegetation and is today a well-known tourist centre, endowed with modern infrastructure, surrounded by natural greenery. About 10km long, with a depth in some parts of around 300 metres, the beach of Sottomarina is appreciated by the entire coastline for the quality of its fine sand, with abundant presence of augite, quartz, silicon and micaceous elements which, together with a regular and constant breeze, makes it the ideal place for some therapeutic rest and an excellent tan. Its wide and welcoming shore is, without a doubt, the ideal place for long walks or for children to enjoy, or simply relaxing.

Italy is an amazing city, well worth visiting and exploring, but there are a few things tourists and travelers should avoid or not do when they come to Venezia, Italia.
Don't - bring too much luggage, having to lug it over all of those bridges and down long streets is not a fun thing to do,
Don't - be surprised if the locals have different lines than the tourists
Don't - pay for a toilet, go get a Spritz or a Coffee instead. You have to pay for something make it a treat, not a toilet.
Don-t - expect a cheap gondola ride. they are a bit pricey and you will need to pay more to get him to sing.
Don't - forget to explore outside the main island of Venice. There are great places to visit around Venice like the Murano glass factories or farther afield in Padova and Vicenza.
Don't - be surprised if you have walk on risers occasionally when the city floods.
Don't - wear skimpy clothes if you are hoping to get into Basilica San Marco.

Chioggia is an Italian town of 48000 inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Venice in the Veneto region in Italy. It is located on the southern edge of the metropolitan city and borders the Venetian lagoon to the north and west, the Adriatic Sea to the east and the Adige and the Po rivers to the south.
In Chioggia there are, like in Venice, streets, squares and canals. The main one, from the tourist point of view due to the typicality of the palaces and churches that overlook it, is the Canal Vena, crossed by nine bridges in many ways similar to those present in Venice.
The most impressive is the Ponte Vigo which closes the canal near the lagoon leading to the square of the same name in front of the boat station for Pellestrina and in which stands a high column surmounted by the Lion of Saint Marcus El Gato (the big cat) because it is much smaller than the lion of Venice. Reason and cause of strong quarrels between Venetians and Chioggia inhabitants, the famous baruffe, the latter feel offended by the contempt that this name precludes.
The church of Saint Andrew, dating back to the eighteenth century, has at its side a Romanesque tower, called the Clock Tower, dating back to the eleventh century and once a defense and military watch tower. Inside it has the oldest tower clock in the world made by Giovanni Dondi (recent studies have proved its pre-existence to that of Salisbury).
The historic center of the city is located at the southern end of the lagoon on a group of islets divided by canals and connected by bridges. Unlike Venice, most of the area is passable by cars and public transport. With the nearby Sottomarina, located in the stretch of land that divides the lagoon from the sea, and with the towns of Borgo San Giovanni and Brondolo, it forms a single urban center thanks to the creation of the Island of the Union and its homonymous bridge that crosses the Lusenzo lagoon.
The historic center of Chioggia, when viewed from above, appears in the shape of a fishbone. The city is called the Little Venice for the urban characteristics of the ancient area very similar to that of Venice, the Venetian capital to which the city is connected.
The legend about the origins of Chioggia is connected to that of Aeneas, the mythical Trojan hero who fled the destruction of Troy who sailed for the Mediterranean and then settled in Latium. Anthenor, Aquilius and Clodius also left with Aeneas, who halfway through the journey separated from their fellow citizen to head towards the Venetian lagoon, founding Padua, Aquileia and Clodia respectively. As proof of this mythical foundation there is the symbol of the city, a rampant red lion on silver background, chosen by Clodius himself in memory of his hometown, and the name of the city itself.
Forte San Felice was originally an islet that emerged in the northern area of ancient Clodia Minor, where there was a wooden tower that signaled the entrance to the lagoon. After the War of Chioggia it was recognized as a fundamental strategic place to guarantee the safety of the southern lagoon. A walk or a bike ride allows you to admire absolutely unique landscapes and views and an impressive city skyline, especially at sunset.
The city of Chioggia is the fifteenth among the twenty-seven cities decorated with a Gold Medal as Meritorious of the National Risorgimento for the highly patriotic actions carried out by the city in the period of the Italian Risorgimento between the uprisings of 1848 and the end of the first world war in 1918.
