Cumbum or Kambam, is a town and municipality in Theni district in the western part of the Madurai Region Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It has many worship places, among them Sri. Kambaraya Perumal Kovil, Sri. Gowmariyamman Kovil, Sri. Nandha Gopal Samy Kovil, Mosques, three churches are situated for a prolong period. Exploring Ramakkalmedu | Idukki Ride Part 7 | Ramakkalmedu Tourist Places | Kuravan Kurathi Statue
We reached the Ramakkalmedu on the fourth day of our #Idukki Bike Ride. Please check it out other videos in this series.
#Ramakkalmedu is a beautiful hill station located in the Idukki district of #Kerala. The hill station has uninterrupted high-velocity wind flowing through it in certain seasons. Hence, the place is a proposed site for generating wind energy. Since the hill station enjoys an elevated location, it offers a magnificent panoramic view of the towns and villages in the surrounding region. The name 'Ramakkalmedu' literally means Rama's footprints. The hill station got that name since it is believed that the Hindu mythological god Rama set foot one of the huge rocks in Ramakkalmedu when he was searching for his wife.
The statue Kuruvan and Kuruthi located on top of one of the hills is a major tourist attraction in Ramakkalmedu. It was erected in 2005. It is believed that Kuruvan and Kuruthi helped the authorities to find a place for and build the Idukki dam. Tourists can access the top of the hill station either by foot or by a vehicle. From on top, you get a clear view of the Ramakkalmedu Wind Energy Farm. Situated at an altitude of 3500 ft above sea level, the hill station offers tremendous opportunities for trekking, hiking, paragliding and camping
Ramakkalmedu also provides beautiful glimpses of the sun rising in the eastern hills and peaceful setting on the western mountains. The mountains located adjacent to the site are enclosed by thick evergreen forests that serve as a natural habitat for various flora and fauna.
According to history, it has a Monument of Kuravan and Kurathi – a large statue depicting the Sangam Period and Sangam landscape of both Kerala and Tamil Nadu. This monument provides a picturesque view of Tamil Nadu villages and towns which includes #Cumbum, #Theni, #Kombai, Thevaram, Uthamapalayam, Bodinaykannor and Veiga. The view from Ramakkalmedu is beautiful at dusk when all these towns in Tamilnadu, are lighted. The Twin figure was sculpted by C.B Jinan and constructed on the top of the hill during the year 2005. The statue depicts the historical characters Kuravan and Kurathi Mala who are connected to the construction of the Idukki Dam.

Cumbum has an average elevation of 391 metres (1282 feet). One can see the backdrop of Kodaikanal Hills from Cumbum. Suruli Falls which is 10 km from Cumbum, is surrounded by mountains. The nearest airport is Madurai and Kochi International Airport (Kerala) which is 175 km by road. Thekkady (Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary Kerala) which is a tourist destination in Kerala state, is 30 km from Cumbum, near Kumily which is a border town between the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Apart from that Cumbum has most vigorous activity in agriculture. Cumbum town is located in the Theni District of Tamil Nadu, near Kerala State. It is the third largest town in Theni district after Theni and Bodinayakanur. The soil in this region is mostly red soil in nature. Agriculture plays a vital role for its developmental activities. Crops like Paddy, Coconut, Groundnut and various kinds of fruits and vegetables are being cultivated in this area. Cumbum is a valley, surrounded by hills. ABOUT RAMAKKALMEDU
Ramakkalmedu(രാമക്കൽമേട് ) is a hill station and a hamlet in Idukki district in the Indian state of Kerala. The place is noted for its panoramic beauty and numerous windmills.
LOCATION
It is located about 15 km from Nedumkandam on the Munnar-Thekkady route. Nearby towns are Thookkupalam (5 km), Kattappana (25 km), and Kumily (40 km).
FLORA AND FAUNA
The ecosystem of the area consists largely of grass land Shola forest type which is laced by sporadic bamboo forests.
CLIMATE
Constant wind is another factor which makes Ramakkalmedu unique. Wind blows at a speed around 35 km/ hour at Ramakkalmedu throughout the year irrespective of the season and time.
WINDMILLS
Villages like Pushpakandam and Kuruvikanam near Ramakkalmedu is the second place in Kerala where wind energy farm is installed,though it is private holdings. Currently the capacity is at about 14.25 MW of NEG MICON Make Wind Mills.This electricity is distributed to Kerala State Electricity Board.even though Ramakkalmedu has potential to produce much electricity,as it is said to be one of Asia's largest wind blowing area.
TOURISM

Although Ramakkalmedu has potential for it to become an international tourist destination, and already attracts more than 100,000 visitors. However, as of 2015 not much had been done for the improvement of basic facilities nearby. The government of Kerala has announced plans to develop this tourist station by improving transportation facilities with buses, upgrading of the Kerala police and other measures.
The scenic beauty of Ramakkalmedu has attracted thousands of people, including Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio. DiCaprio has reportedly said about this place that If there is a paradise on earth, it is here.
KURAVAN AND KURATHI
Ramakalmedu is a historic site with a Monument to Kuravan and Kurathi – a large statue that depicts the Sangam Period and Sangam landscape of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The monument provides a panoramic view of Tamil Nadu villages and towns, including Cumbum, Theni, Kombe, Thevaram, Uthamapalayam, Bodinaykannor and Vaiga. Rolling green hills and the fresh mountain air make Ramakalmedu an enchanting retreat. The view is striking at dusk when all these towns are lighted.
Rama – kal – medu literally means Land of Rama’s Stone or Land where Rama kept his leg (Rama is a Hindu God in the epic Ramayana). One story says that Lord Rama kept his feet at the tip of Ramakkalmedu to search Ravana the King of Lanka, who abducted his wife Sita.
The statue by C.B Jinan was erected on the top of the hill in the year 2005. The statue depicts two historical characters behind the construction of the Idukki Dam. The rocks between the Idukki dam are named after Kuravan and Kurathi, who helped authorities to find the right place for constructing the dam
