Two Weeks Itinerary in Tuscany, Umbria and Rome | Italy Hidden Gems
We were invited to a friend’s beautiful Tuscany Italy wedding in late August. We used this invitation as the opportunity to rent a car and do a road trip to explore many towns in the region. We also visited Umbria and Rome Italy, for two weeks.
We stayed in Tuscany near the famous Val D’Orcia Italy region for the first one and a half weeks by renting an Airbnb apartment in Chiusi, a small but beautiful town in Tuscany on the border of Umbria. We used our base in Chiusi to travel to all the nearby towns we wanted to visit.

Tips and Details:
- We received a Fiat Panda semi-automatic rental car that we don’t recommend. The car would take a few seconds to go after hitting the gas pedal. This would cause the car to slide back in the meantime when parked on a hill, which was pretty uncomfortable. It was the only non-manual car available and fully manual cars would probably have been better.
- Wine is very cheap. Five dollar wines are like 15-20 dollar wines in the states. More expensive wines, especially from local shops and wineries are so good that you can’t find them in the states!
- There were charming small shops and picturesque restaurants in Chiusi. Being on a budget however, we bought most of our food at a nearby supermarket called Pam Superstore (Pam Chiusi on Google Maps), which had everything we needed and local products to try at great prices. We bought the most expensive bottle of olive oil for about 10 dollars and it was the best olive oil we had anywhere.
- You can forgo your car at Chiusi Scalo train station or even visit the town without a car by jumping on a train to the town. You can also rent a car at the train station. We walked 25 minutes from our apartment in Chiusi to the train station and didn’t have to pay for parking at the station this way. Some people got fined for parking at the station since it wasn’t allowed.
- Although we saw so many places in two weeks, we recommend consolidating your itinerary and stick to one or two towns per day to get the most out of them. After seeing so many towns, they all start resembling one another, even though they all have very unique things about them that are easy to miss.
- Places we wanted to go to but didn’t: Parco dei Mulini hot springs, Viterbo, Volterra, Sarteano, Spello, Civita di Bagnoregio, San Marino
- Total budget for two weeks including accommodations ($100 per night for entire, large apartments), car rental ($20 per day), gas (not sure but less than $250), food (not sure but less than $500), and train ($100) was under $3,000. This does not include airfare.

Chianciano Terme: a town with thermal baths is a municipality in the province of Siena, Tuscany, Italy. In the 5th century BC the Etruscans built a temple dedicated to the god of Good Health close to the Sillene springs where the town stands today. During Roman times luxurious Roman villas were built near the thermal baths. Today, the town is considered among the finest health resorts in Italy especially with its therapeutic water that is reputed to cleanse the liver via an increase in the production and excretion of liver bile. Among the more notable spas are Acqua Santa, Acqua Fucoli, Acqua Sillene, Acqua Santissima (which also advertises itself as a spa for those with respiratory problems), and Acqua Sant'Elena (which advertises that the calcic-alkaline bicarbonate in its water can treat kidney and urinary tract problems).

Источники Кьянчано-Терме в Италии были известны еще в эпоху этрусков (IV в. до н.э). К их целебным свойствам прибегали и древние римляне: именно тут император Август смог вылечить тяжелое заболевание печени. Сегодня же сюда приезжают на реабилитацию космонавты.
Конечно же, Кьянчано-Терме в Италии – это в первую очередь термальный курорт. Что не мешает ему оставаться очень красивым и самобытным городом. С его смотровых площадок открываются незабываемые виды на зеленые холмы, дубовые и буковые рощи, зеркальную гладь озера Тразимено. В историческом центре сохранились древние постройки: средневековый замок Manenti Castle, готическое здание Городской Ратуши, церковь Девы Марии, дворец Palazzo De Vegni и т.д.
Город отличается уютной и гостеприимной атмосферой: здесь есть множество парков, аллей, велосипедных дорожек, небольших ресторанов с превосходной тосканской кухней, сувенирных лавочек и магазинов.
Кроме того, отсюда очень легко добраться до знаменитых итальянских достопримечательностей в Орвието, Сиену, Ареццо, Сан-Джиминьяно, Рим, Пизу, Флоренцию и другие города.

Во время нашего очередного авто-путешествия по Италии (30 мая – 8 июня 2017г., около 2000 км), по древней земле этрусков и римлян, мы посетили такие красивые города и достопримечательности центра Италии (побережье Лигурийского моря, Тоскана и Умбрия), как: La Spezia, PortoVenere, Cinque Terre (Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola и Riomaggiore), Portofino, Lucca, Volterra, San Gimignano, Montalcino, Abbazia di Sant'Antimo, Bagni di San Filippo, Pienza, Chianciano, Montepulciano, Perugia, Assisi, Bolsena, Civita, Orvieto, Pitigliano, Terme di Saturnia и Pisa…
С сожалением, мы исключили из маршрута такие чудеса этого региона, как Флоренцию и Сиену, так как уже бывали в этих городах ранее. Не все из запланированного удалось осуществить, так не смогли погулять по городу Spoleto (физически не хватило времени) и увидеть знаменитый мраморный каскад Marmore Waterfalls – когда мы добрались туда в 17:00, то оказалось, что его уже закрыли – было очень обидно!
В этом регионе огромное количество красивых и древних городов, терм и других достопримечательностей, достойных внимания, о которых, возможно, я посещу в своем следующем путешествии по Италии.
О вышеперечисленных же городах, я расскажу Вам в своих фильмах и фотографиях, которые подготовлю в течении лета!

Il centro storico di Chianciano, nel suo insieme, è un perfetto esempio di paese medievale, ma in esso si trovano racchiuse testimonianze delle diverse epoche storiche e artistiche che hanno interessato il territorio.
L’ingresso stesso alla zona centrale, attraverso Porta Rivellini, ne è un esempio: la Porta ha un’ubicazione e una funzione tipiche delle città medievali, ma i suoi tratti essenziali e le sue linee eleganti dimostrano gli interventi successivi avvenuti in epoca rinascimentale.
Appena oltrepassata la porta, si offre in tutta la sua bellezza alla vista dei turisti la Chiesa dell’Immacolata, che sorge sul sito che una volta ospitava una chiesa più antica e un ospedale.
A dominare la via, oltre alla chiesa, è la Torre dell’Orologio, anch’essa caratterizzata dalla struttura medievale ma largamente restaurata in epoche successive. Sempre ad epoche successive risale anche lo stemma dei Medici che campeggia sulla facciata.
L’edificio del comune, invece, si affaccia su Piazza Matteotti, splendidamente ornata dalla fontana risalente al XVIII secolo, a pianta esagonale e adagiata al termine di una scalinata.
Dall’altra lato della piazza trova spazio il Castello Manenti, chiamato anche Monastero. Antichi documenti fanno risalire il Castello all’anno mille e ne raccontano le traversie legate alle vicende storiche e politiche del territorio conteso tra Siena, Orvieto e, infine, Firenze.
In questo contesto eccezionale, si possono individuare ben 5 sorgenti di acqua termale intorno alle quali, naturalmente, si sono sviluppati una serie di stabilimenti e alberghi che ogni anno richiamano un’enorme quantità di turisti.
