Grand Peterhof Palace in Peterhof, Russia

The Peterhof Palace, is a series of palaces and gardens located in Petergof, Saint Petersburg, Russia, commissioned by Peter the Great as a direct response to the Palace of Versailles by Louis XIV of France. Originally intending it in 1709 for country habitation, Peter the Great sought to expand the property as a result of his visit to the French royal court in 1717, inspiring the nickname of The Russian Versailles. The architect between 1714 and 1728 was Domenico Trezzini, and the style he employed became the foundation for the Petrine Baroque style favored throughout Saint Petersburg. Also in 1714, Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond, likely chosen due to his previous collaborations with Versailles landscaper André Le Nôtre, designed the gardens. Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli completed an expansion from 1747 to 1756 for Elizabeth of Russia. The palace-ensemble along with the city center is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The end of the Great Northern War resulted in the Treaty of Nystad in 1721, ceding much of the Swedish Empire's claim to the Baltic Sea to the rising Tsardom of Russia. Peter the Great already began construction of his new capital St Petersburg in 1703 after successfully capturing Swedish provinces on the eastern coast. This strategic location allowed Russian access to the Baltic Sea through the Neva River that flowed to the Gulf of Finland. The island of Kotlin and its fortress Kronstadt northeast of St Petersburg provided a gateway and commercial harbor access owing to the shallowness of water closer to the city.

Throughout the early 18th century, Peter the Great built and expanded the Peterhof Palace complex as a part of his goal to modernize and westernize Russia.

The dominant natural feature of Peterhof is a 16-m-high bluff lying less than 100 m from the shore. The so-called Lower Gardens, at 1.02 km² comprising the better part of Peterhof's land area, are confined between this bluff and the shore, stretching east and west for roughly 200 m. The majority of Peterhof's fountains are contained here, as are several small palaces and outbuildings. East of the Lower Gardens lies the Alexandria Park with 19th-century Gothic Revival structures such as the Kapella.

Atop the bluff, near the middle of the Lower Gardens, stands the Grand Palace. Behind of it are the comparatively small Upper Gardens. Upon the bluff's face below the palace is the Grand Cascade. This and the Grand Palace are the centrepiece of the entire complex. At its foot begins the Sea Channel, one of the most extensive waterworks of the Baroque period, which bisects the Lower Gardens.

The Grand Cascade and Samson Fountain
The Grand Cascade is modelled on one constructed for Louis XIV at his Château de Marly, which is likewise memorialised in one of the park's outbuildings.

At the centre of the cascade is an artificial grotto with two stories, faced inside and out with hewn brown stone. It currently contains a modest museum of the fountains' history. One of the exhibits is a table carrying a bowl of (artificial) fruit, a replica of a similar table built under Peter's direction. The table is rigged with jets of water that soak visitors when they reach for the fruit, a feature from Mannerist gardens that remained popular in Germany. The grotto is connected to the palace above and behind by a hidden corridor.

The fountains of the Grand Cascade are located below the grotto and on either side of it. There are 64 fountains. Their waters flow into a semicircular pool, the terminus of the fountain-lined Sea Channel. In the 1730s, the large Samson Fountain was placed in this pool. It depicts the moment when Samson tears open the jaws of a lion, representing Russia's victory over Sweden in the Great Northern War, and is doubly symbolic. The lion is an element of the Swedish coat of arms, and one of the great victories of the war was won on St Sampson's Day. From the lion's mouth shoots a 20-metre high vertical jet of water, the highest in all of Peterhof. This masterpiece by Mikhail Kozlovsky was looted by the invading Germans during the Second World War; see History below. A replica of the statue was installed in 1947.

Perhaps the greatest technological achievement of Peterhof is that all of the fountains operate without the use of pumps. Water is supplied from natural springs and collects in reservoirs in the Upper Gardens. The elevation difference creates the pressure that drives most of the fountains of the Lower Gardens, including the Grand Cascade. The Samson Fountain is supplied by a special aqueduct, over 4 km in length, drawing water and pressure from a high-elevation source.

Some interesting facts about peterhoff palace

1. Peterhof Palace, also known as the Russian Versailles, is located on the Gulf of Finland, about 30 kilometers west of St. Petersburg.

2. The palace complex was commissioned by Peter the Great in the early 18th century as a residence to rival the opulence of the Palace of Versailles in France.

3. Peterhof is famous for its stunning gardens and fountains. It boasts over 150 fountains, including the famous Grand Cascade, which consists of three waterfalls and 64 fountains.

4. The Grand Cascade is powered by natural pressure, without the use of pumps. Water from a nearby reservoir flows through a series of tunnels and can reach a height of 21 meters.

5. The palace was heavily damaged during World War II and was later restored to its former glory. Today, it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Russia.

6. The interior of the palace is equally impressive, with lavishly decorated rooms and halls, including the Grand Throne Room, the Chesma Hall, and the Picture Hall.

7. Peterhof Palace and its gardens are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, providing visitors with a unique glimpse into the rich history and grandeur of the Russian monarchy.

8. Peterhof is also home to several smaller palaces, such as the Monplaisir Palace, the Marly Palace, and the Catherine Block, which were used as summer residences by Russian emperors.

9. The palace complex covers a vast area of over 1,000 hectares, including the Upper Garden, the Lower Park, and the Alexandria Park, offering visitors plenty of space to explore and admire the beauty of the surroundings.

10. Every year, Peterhof Palace hosts the Peterhof Flower Festival, a vibrant event that showcases intricate flower arrangements and stunning floral displays throughout the gardens, adding even more beauty to an already magnificent setting.

EVERY VIDEO EVER in TEN minutes | FIVE YEARS of your LIFE could look like THIS! | The Tao of David

Hi everyone! I'm back from my five-month YouTube break with a very special video highlighting the 5 year (so far!) journey of The Tao of David. 5 years of my life in 10 minutes!

If you're a long-term viewer, it's an opportunity for a major recap as well as encouraging you to contemplate how your own life can change in five years.

If you're new, I originally left the UK in 2016 to travel for six months after selling everything. Over the next 5 years, I set up this channel, became an online teacher, writer, amateur photographer and Digital Nomad. I've travelled to and lived in over 50 countries in my life (over 30 in the last 5 years!) such as Mexico, Japan, Serbia and Colombia. I am in the process of gaining Polish citizenship by descent in order to become an EU citizen again and potentially move to Latvia long-term.

The point of The Tao of David is reflect the true reality of travelling full-time and working online. It's not always rosy. Sometimes it's a nightmare! My aim is to go against the YouTube grain of pretending to be shocked and provide a unique view on this lifestyle. I post videos on travel, digital nomad life and teaching English online, all with a typical British dark humour, wit and sarcasm!

I'm in Mexico FOR THE SEVENTH TIME and new videos will be up soon from a brand new location! I hope you will come along with me!

Çeşme (Turkish pronunciation: [ˈtʃeʃme]) is a coastal town and the administrative centre of the district of the same name in Turkey's westernmost end, on a promontory on the tip of the peninsula that also carries the same name and that extends inland to form a whole with the wider Karaburun Peninsula. It is a popular holiday resort and the district center, where two thirds of the district population is concentrated. Çeşme is located 85 km west of İzmir, the largest metropolitan center in Turkey's Aegean Region. There is a six-lane highway connecting the two cities (Otoyol 32). Çeşme district has two neighboring districts, Karaburun to the north and Urla to the east, both of which are also part of İzmir Province. The name Çeşme means fountain and possibly draws reference from the many Ottoman fountains that are scattered across the city.

It was an ancient Greek city in classical antiquity named Kyssos (Κυσσός) and (Ancient Greek: Κύσος Kysos),[citation needed] and under the Romans it was named Cysus.

Turkish sources always cited the town and the region as Çeşme (or Cheshme) which is originally a Persian word since the first settlement 2 km south of the present-day center (Çeşmeköy) founded by Tzachas and pursued for some time by his brother Yalvaç before an interlude until the 14th century. The name Çeşme means spring, fountain in Persian (چشمه) and possibly draws reference from the many Ottoman fountains scattered across the city.

The urban center and the port of the region in antiquity was at Erythrae (present-day Ildırı), in another bay to the north-east of Çeşme.

The town of Çeşme itself experienced its golden age in the Middle Ages, when a modus vivendi established in the 14th century between the Republic of Genoa, which held Chios (Scio), and the Beylik of Aydinids, which controlled the Anatolian mainland, was pursued under the Ottomans, and export and import products between western Europe and Asia were funneled via Çeşme and the ports of the island, only hours away and tributary to Ottomans but still autonomous after 1470. Chios became part of the Ottoman Empire in an easy campaign led by Piyale Pasha in 1566. In fact, the Pasha simply laid anchor in Çeşme and summoned the notables of the island to notify them of the change of authority. After the Ottoman capture and through preference shown by the foreign merchants, the trade hub gradually shifted to İzmir, which until then was touched only tangentially by the caravan routes from the east, and the prominence of the present-day metropolis became more pronounced after the 17th century. In 1770, the Çeşme bay became the location of naval Battle of Chesma between Russian and Ottoman fleets during Russo-Turkish War (1768–1774). After the Balkan Wars, Bosniaks mainly from Montenegro settled in the environs of Çeşme such as Alaçatı and Çiflikköy. Up until September 16, 1922 Greeks consisted the majority of Çeşme and its environs. In 1924 with the Population exchange Muslims from Greece mainly from Karaferye settled to the town.
