In this video we will share some things to see and do in Cherokee, North Carolina. There are lots of activities in addition to the casino in Cherokee. There are things the whole family can enjoy doing. There is the Great Smoky Mountain National Park close by as well. In Cherokee there is fishing and swimming in addition to many other activities. Close by you will find the Mingus Mill, the Oconaluftee Indian Village, the Oconaluftee Visitors Center, waterfalls and hiking. All of these activities can be found just off of the Blue Ridge Parkway Join us as we give you a brief tour of Cherokee and some of the many attractions we enjoyed.

Unto These Hills Outdoor Drama in Cherokee, NC was on our bucket list for things to do in the Smoky Mountains. We are from here and have been to Cherokee, NC dozens of times, however we had never seen this show. And now... we can recommend it to you and your family during your next visit to the Smoky Mountains!
Here's the biggest tip for bringing your family, and young kids, to Unto These Hills: Sit in the upper parts of the theater. The theater is large and comfortable. Other than the middle section, the seating is general admission. Get there early enough to hit the restrooms, grab some concessions, and then snag some really great seats towards the top. Why?
Because there is lots of gunfire and even a cannon that fires during the show. Wow! It was spectacular, although it was a little much for Cora. She's 6 and the firing was loud and a bit startling. Ask her and she will tell you that she wants to go back AND sit in the front again. But this mama knows that we will definitely go back AND we will definitely sit further up.
Unto These Hills is only open during the summer. You'll be glad because even though it's summer, it gets cooler outside once the sun goes down. We are in the mountains, which makes it even cooler. Some might want to bring a blanket.
The show begins in the evening when it's still daylight. During the first half we got a look into the Cherokee's lives before and during the arrival of European settlers. Fittingly, the sun set and we watched the second half in darkness as the Cherokee people faced the realities of the 1700's through early 1900's in the United States of America.
Even if you're fluent in American history, brace yourself for the emotion of this show. It is a triumphant show, yet heart breaking and moving. It is important for people of all ages to see and appreciate this show. You can be sure of your decision to add a stop at Unto These Hills to your Smoky Mountain family vacation itinerary.
TIP: Visit the Oconaluftee Indian Village (on the same property) during the day of your visit to Unto These Hills. We saw them both in the same day and it was fascinating to learn more about the beautiful Cherokee people at the Indian Village, and then to see it in action at Unto These Hills. Save money and buy a combo ticket.

Oconaluftee Indian Village in Cherokee, NC. BEST attraction in Cherokee, NC.
The Oconoluftee Indian Village is a living history museum set in the hills of the Smoky Mountains and the land of the Cherokee Indians in Cherokee, NC. You and your family will not want to miss this during your visit to Cherokee! This is the #1 BEST ATTRACTION in Cherokee, NC! It's also one of the BEST things to do with kids in Cherokee.
We started our guided tour by watching Cherokee Indian artisans demonstrating their crafts. Weaving, beading, basket weaving, wood carving, and weapons were being crafted while our guide educated us on the ingenuity of the Cherokee people.
Our guide was knowledgeable and did a great job at answering our group's questions, and the artisans were welcoming of our inquisitiveness.
The tour continued through the beautiful backdrop of the Smokies as we saw examples of Cherokee homes from the 1600's, 1700's, and 1800's. We also learned more about Cherokee politics, the hierarchy of their civilization, and about the tools and inventions they used to thrive in the land of blue smoke.
Learning more about the beautiful Cherokee people is an opportunity that your family will not want to miss! We visited the Oconaluftee Indian Village during the day, AND then we saw Unto These Hills that evening. Watch our Unto These Hills video here:

On the weekend of October 10, 2021, we visited Cherokee. There is a river called Oconaluftee along with Cherokee.
There is a park by the river, and we had a lovely walk there.
We parked next to the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, which we really wanted to see, but it closed at 5 p.m., and that's when we got here.
So we walked along the river before heading back to the hotel and already planning the next day's program, which included a visit to the museum.
On Monday morning, the 11th, we went to see the Mingo Falls in Cherokee. I believe this is the 2nd falls we saw, and this one is special as well. Mingo Falls is the tallest (~120 ft) waterfall in southern Appalachia, well hidden in the woods. Fortunately, there is a short trail, but you also need to climb 160+ steps. However, it's worth it.
We had great weather, it was warm, it was very relaxing to walk in Cherokee.
