New Mexico's parks are less crowded many other western parks but still have stunning scenery. On this trip we drive from South to North. Starting by exploring 3 of the least visited National Parks in the country- White Sands, Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Mts..

In Alamogordo we visit New Mexico's Space History Museum and see rockets tested at the nearby missile range.

We go to one of my favorite places- 3 Rivers Petroglyphs site to hike among 20,000 ancient rock carvings and meet a blind lady in her 70 who enjoys hiking!

On the road north we go to the UFO museum in Roswell. And then walk on a Lava Field at the Valley of Fires BLM camping area, before visiting the Trinity Site.

In Albuquerque we visit the 4 sites of Petroglyph Monument including a volcano field! While looking at a map I saw a marker for Coronado State Park, so we make an unscheduled stop to see the remains an old adobe village on the Rio Grande where Spanish Conquistador Coronado once stayed- until the battle.

We make a quick stop at a stone church built in 1621. On our way to Super Volcano- or at least its remains-- Valles Caldera.

The highlight of the northern part of the trip is the cliff dwellings at Bandelier National Monument. We visit the cliff houses and see the nearby stone village.

We make a quick stop in Santa Fe and another in Taos before flying over the spectacular Rio Grande Gorge Bridge before our final stop on top of a cinder cone volcano and Capulin Volcano National Monument.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU VISIT REDWOOD NATIONAL PARK

Today we share things to know before you visit Redwood National Park including things to do at Redwood, things to know before you go to Redwood National Park, Redwood National Park fees and Redwood National Park trail options. This Redwood National Park travel guide also includes where to stay at Redwood including Redwood lodge options and Redwood Hotel options.

Known as the home of the tallest trees in the world, Redwood National Park has fascinated me since I was a child. It has an amazing rugged coastline to explore, wild river-ways and has been hoe to people for thousands of years.

When to visit Redwood National Park:

Summer is high season in Redwood National Park, with most visitors heading here in June, July or August. The temperature is warm and, because of the large size of the park, it rarely feels crowded. Although summer is a great time to visit, Fall offers milder temperatures and is a beautiful time to visit the forest but just remember to bring layers and a rain jacket.

Visiting Redwood National Park

- How long? - You can drive through the park in around 25 minutes if you stick to the 101 but if you drive the Avenue of the Giants, it will take around 2.5 hours, including time for a walk around the woods and a picnic stop. We recommend planning at least a full day, if not two. With over 40miles of coastline and 133000 total acres, there is a lot to explore here.

- Location - The park is located in Northern California, around a 6 hour drive north of San Francisco. Most people choose to fly into San Francisco but you can fly into Arcata-Eureka Airport. This is a tiny airport so expect expensive and sometimes unreliable flights.

- Fees - There is no entrance fee for Redwood National Park but there is a $5 day-use fee for the nearby state parks.

- Get climbing - Every March, Tree Climbing Planet founder Tim Kovar, allows a limited number of visitors to climb into the tree canopy, up a grandfather tree; standing between 600 to 1000 years old.

- Drive through - There are three drive-through redwood trees along the Avenure of the Giants highway, however you are charged a small fee to drive through them

- Camping - There are four campgrounds within Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park but thee must be reserved by phone or online at least 48 hours before. However, you can book 6 months in advance to avoid disappointment. The standard camping fee is $35 but there are some basic cabins in the campgrounds which cost $100 per night during the summer.

- Stay near - Alternatively, you can stay near by booking a nearby hotel or lodge, such as the Holiday Inn Express, the Elk Meadow Cabins or the Lost Whale Inn.

- Also whilst you are in the park, there are some things that you can’t miss out on. - There are lots of amazing things to see and do in the national park. Don’t miss the Fern Canyon, the James Irvine Trail and the Gold Bluffs beach. You can also spot wildlife such as the Roosevelt Elk and the black-tailed deer.

Chaparral Pines Golf Course Hole #7; DRONE VIDEO W/PRO TIPS

Chaparral Pines Golf Course Hole #7; DRONE VIDEO W/PRO TIPS

One of the toughest and most beautiful par 5's in God's creation. From the tees, golfers play over a wild and rocky creek bed to the fairway. This double dogleg twists and turns between high pine-covered ridges while following the creek all the way to a narrow green placed between the creek and an abrupt hillside. A most challenging 3-shot hole which demands respect. Most (smart) golfers will play it cautiously for a 5 or 6. For the bold, the risks are high but the reward could be very satisfying.

Chaparral Pines Country Club Hole #6; DRONE VIDEO W/PRO TIPS

Chaparral Pines Country Club Hole #6; DRONE VIDEO W/PRO TIPS

Graham and Panks created much of this hole by sculpting a large deep quarry between tee and green to provide needed borrow material for the 7th. (The architect has paid his respects to Mother Nature everywhere else on the course and asks for her forgiveness here.) Anyway, the quarry does add a wonderful view corridor to this delightful little hole. The green is flanked by a (natural) hillock on the left with a lone pine, the quarry in front and saving bunkers on the right and rear. Thank you Mother Nature.
