There are lots of free things to do in Chicago if you are not afraid to walk a little bit. Chicago has a magnificent lake front and in the summer, you can enjoy the Chicago beaches. In addition to Lake Michigan, Chicago also has the Chicago River, which riverfront has now been developed in a nice walking trail. Chicago also has great shopping on Michigan Avenue. The Chicago Skyline is also spectacular and you can se it from Navy Pier, from the Museum Campus, or from Buckingham Fountain. But Chicago's favorite tourist attraction is now Cloudgate also know by the locals as the 'Bean'.

It was a beautiful day so we figured we would check out a state park we've never been to that's near us. It turned into a great day for a picnic, some playing and a bike ride.
Hiking the Illinois & Michigan Canal trail with Drone Shots Channahon, IL
Hiking the Illinois & Michigan Canal trail starting in Channahon, Illinois for seven mile put and back. Small part of the sixty-one mile trail. The name Channahon is a Native American word for the meeting of the waters. Four rivers including the DuPage, DesPlaines, Kankakee, and Illinois River flow through this area, plus the I&M Canal. The day was March 3 after a brutal February of snow and cold. The trail was not ideal for walking due to the mud, left over ice and snow, and areas of standing water. If you don’t mind getting your feet wet it was ok. I went on a Wednesday and was alone on the trail.
I launched my DJI Mavic Mini drone along the canal and DesPlaine river. I used my DJI OM4 Gimbal with my iPhone 11 for photos and videos.
Witnessed a large barge and two swans. Many ducks along the waterway. Visited McKinley Woods Loop. Trail took me by the canal lock, spill way dam, and over bridges. Also, took a detour off the trail for a walk in the woods designated for snow mobiles.

Channahon, IL Flood 7/18/1996
This is the July flood of 1996 taken on July 18th, 1996 at the I and M Canal access at state park in Channahon, IL. Eventually, the bike bridge over the Du Page River Feeder you see in the background was destroyed shortly after by tree limbs in the water. It had been re-constructed afterwards and remains usable today.

Hiking Matthiessen State Park -Canyons, Streams, and Forest
Beautiful Matthiessen State Park which is part of the of Illinois State Park with canyons, stream, caves, and forest trails. Hiked December 21, 2020 on a 40 degree day and sunny. It’s located just south of Utica, Illinois in northern Illinois, and just south of the the Starved Rock State Park. It’s easy to do both in one day. Also known for its original name Deer Park which attracted deer to its mineral springs. The area was lurched in the early 1900s by the industrialist and philanthropist Frederick Matthiessen who the built bridges and stair cases to give access to the public. A hidden gem for hikers. To access the canyon there are numerous stairs cases. There is also a river trail which was closed during my visit.

The Loop is a vibrant area featuring eclectic eateries, shops, theaters and parks. Comprised mostly of high-rises, it’s also home to the 108-story Willis Tower. Marquette Park, the largest park on the southwest side of Chicago, Illinois, at 323 acres (1.31 km2), is located at 41.768°N 87.703°W in the city's Chicago Lawn neighborhood. The park is named for Father Jacques Marquette (1637–1675).
Evergreen Park is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. In 2010, the population was 19,852. Evergreen Park is surrounded by the city of Chicago on three of its sides, while Oak Lawn and Hometown border it on the west. Chicago's Ashburn community is to its north, Beverly is to its east, and Beverly and Mount Greenwood are to its south.
According to the 2010 census, Evergreen Park has a total area of 3.16 square miles (8.18 km2), all land.
Beverly, officially Beverly Hills, is the 72nd of Chicago's 77 community areas. Located 12 miles (19 km) from the Loop, it is on the city's far south side. Calumet City is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 37,042 at the 2010 census, a decline of 5.2% from 2000. The ZIP code is 60409. Calumet City (commonly referred to locally as Cal City) was founded in 1893 when the villages of Schrumville and Sobieski Park merged under the name of West Hammond, since it lies on the west side of the Illinois-Indiana line from Hammond, Indiana.In 1924, West Hammond officially became Calumet City after its citizens voted to change the name in 1923.
In addition to being bordered to the east by Hammond, it is also bordered by Burnham and Chicago to the north, Lansing to the south, and South Holland and Dolton to the west.
