24 Blissful Hours in Vilcabamba Ecuador | Loja Province
One day in the Valley of Longevity in southern Ecuador. The best things to do in Vilcabamba Ecuador besides Cerro Mandango.
A lot of people here live to be over 100 years old. It's also become one of the best places to retire in Ecuador and there is a big expat community in Vilcabamba as it's an affordable place to retire.
The market is a great place to start, impeccably clean and often using organic food. Not because it is certified but because there is a lot of organic farming in Vilcabamba.
We ate a typical Ecuadorian breakfast food called tigrillo. That is mashed green plantains, quesillo cheese, which is fresh, and then egg.
So we're tying two different plates. One is the beef and short ribs tigrillo. The other one is seco de pollo, which means dry chicken. Seco de costilla, so ribs again, in a sauce even though they say it’s seco, which means dry.
We just walked 8000 steps so we stopped at Zara Brewing Company. It's been around since 2013, right off the main square. This is the third brewery I have seen today so far. I am having the agave wheat ale. It's an amber color but actually tastes quite light. Kind of citrusy with a little bit of bitter taste on the end but not too much. The owner is American and he has these crazy photos of Putin on the inside as a joke to one of his friends who's Russian.
Staying the night at Hosteria El Descanso del Toro ( and what an amazing place. I love the natural wood, the open air, and the views of the mountains in Vilcabamba are amazing.
So in southern Ecuador if you stay at a hosteria it means there’s also a pool. And it tends to be in natural areas. So people want to go hiking for the day, go out into nature. And then they want to come back and just relax by the pool. And so this spot has a brewery, a restaurant and a fantastic hotel.
It's also home to Cerveceria Wilco, an Ecuadorian craft beer company. They are one of two artisanal beer companies in Ecuador that offer beer in cans - which is very different for Ecuador as many locals prefer bottles.
They have a great approach, experimenting with local flavours like mora or blackberry and it's fantastic.

We took some beer down to Rio Chamba. And a lot of locals believe that this is the secret to longevity. You can see someone here, just in the water in her hair and hands.
They believe that if you dip your toes in or swim in it. I guess the more water you get the better. That you will live for a long age.
The weather is perfect here. I actually now see why so many people move here. It's warm but windy but arid. This is the kind of place that you could fall in love with for sure.

Cayambe Ecuador is in the heart of dairy country, driving through is the sweet smell of rose farms and lots of bizcocho signs.
If you stop in in Bizcochos San Pedro between 8-10am you can learn how to make bizcochos. However, we arrived at 3pm for almuerzo and ate some of the local Ecuadorian foods in the Imbabura Province.

Havana, Cuba Travel Vlog 2017 #TosheTravel
First thing I will say is that Havana, Cuba is simply amazing. When you land, you feel like you are back in the 1970s. The people, the culture, the food, the buildings, the cars..... everything is breathtaking.
Below I have included a list of what we did with dos and don’ts.
1. First thing, traveling to Cuba is getting tougher and tougher. Visitors can only enter the country if traveling for one of 12 pre-approved purposes (we traveled on a research visa) and recent regulations have made it even harder for American citizens to enter the country (i.e., in November 2017 a new policy requires U.S. citizens to travel with a U.S.-borne tour guide). I strongly encourage you to research these regulations carefully and ensure you have an acceptable reason for visiting and have followed all instructions for entering the country.
2. There are two currencies in Cuba: The CUC and the National Peso. There is a difference in the two currencies with pricing so make sure to be aware of which currency you are using and receiving for change. The CUC is equal to the US dollar; so 1 USD = 1 CUC. Most tourists can exchange / use the CUC for all purposes as all restaurants, residences, tours, etc. use this currency. It will be important to exchange more than enough currency before / upon arrival as it is challenging to get access to the CUC for USD in Havana (especially at a good rate!). Additionally, your credit card and your bank account will not work in Cuba.
3. We stayed at Sheraton four points in Havana which was about 15 minutes from old Havana. Old Havana, is where most of the restaurants and touristy activities are. At our hotel, we had free transportation via the hotel shuttle bus which went back and forth from Havana to old Havana. If your residence doesn’t provide you with a shuttle, getting around by cab is easy. There are literally cabs everywhere! If you don’t want to do a hotel, there is AirBnB in Cuba and it seems like this is becoming the more popular option for many, especially with huge groups.
4. NEGOTIATING!!!!!!!! -I had no idea how hard they hustled when it came to money in Havana. When we landed, from the airport to our hotel we were told the cab would be $30. We did not negotiate the price initially but, once we learned the power of negotiating on our way back to the airport we only paid $10. We found out quick and fast during the course of our trip that if the locals knew you were not from Cuba they would hike up ALL the prices. So be ready to haggle. The only places you probably will not be able to negotiate at would be the restaurants.
5. Restaurants- I thought it was every interesting that many restaurants did not have set menus but, rather, had a meal of the day. So either you would eat the meal they were serving or you could go somewhere else. Also, something else to keep in mind is that we were told by locals that most restaurants had 2 menus. 1 menu for the locals and the 2nd for the tourists (with higher prices of course; see comment above). Meals in Cuba mostly consisted of rice, pork, chicken and bread. “Tourist” meals roughly cost $15 per meal. Cocktails were around $5. You HAVE to get the mojitos and caipirinhas in Cuba! El Floridita restaurant is a good place for day time/Happy hour drinks. El Floridita is known for their daiquiris and a famous hang out of Ernest Hemingway. Supposedly La Guardia is one of the GO-TO restaurants however you have to book reservations in advance and we did not have time to go.
