This vlog is about my experience of traveling from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar Island in Tanzania by taking the Zanfast ferries. I sent my Motorcycle by slow overnight ferry and pick up from the ferry terminal in Zanzibar.

Pemba Island is part of Tanzania's Zanzibar Archipelago, off the coast of East Africa. It's known for its lush, green hills and clove plantations. The Pemba Channel, with its coral reefs and abundant marine life, separates the island from mainland Tanzania. The main town, Chake Chake, has a ruined 18th-century fort with a museum. Offshore, Misali Island is home to the Fischer's turaco, a colorful rare bird.

Pemba is a magical island. Unlike Unguja (Zanzibar), Pemba is hilly. Gentle, undulating hills and deep verdant valleys are all covered with a dense cover of clove, coconut, mango and other fruit and crop plantations. A more fertile land is difficult to imagine.
Pemba Island has been separated from the mainland of Tanzania and Zanzibar for decades, leaving an untouched and pristine island of great beauty and fertility. The mosaic of forests, swamps, mangroves, hidden beaches and lagoons is scattered with the ruins of mosques and tombs mostly reclaimed by the forest – sites that date back to Arab domination when Pemba Island was seized by the Sultan of Muscat (Oman) in the 17th century. He loved the Spice Islands and established his court in Zanzibar and ruled Muscat from there.
With scarcely a handful of places to stay, Pemba remains truly off the beaten track. It’s a prospect that, for some, makes it all the more beguiling.

Pemba Island is a small island which is part of Zanzibar. It is the 2nd biggest island of Zanzibar.
Pemba is less known as Unguja (Zanzibar). If you have the chance to go there you won't be disappointed. There are so many things to see and do in Pemba.
During my stay in Zanzibar, I have been able to visit Pemba for a week. I went to the beach, Chake Chake, Wete, Makangale Beach...
As I was a volunteer there, I spent time with locals doing everyday routines.

Il faut savoir que l'île de Pemba est moins connu que l'île principale qui est Unguja. Si vous avez la chance de visiter Pemba, vous ne serez pas déçus. Il y a de très nombreuses choses à voir et à faire sur Pemba.

Stiamo aspettando la nave per tornare a Zanzibar. Con la gente del posto, cerchiamo di imparare un pò di Swahili e di insegnare un pò di Italiano. Finiamo a giocare prima a biglie e poi a Basket con i ragazzi di Mkoani. Affamati e stanhi ci imbarchiamo verso Zanzibar.
MKOANI: E' una piccola cittadina situata a sud dell'isola diPemba, che riveste un ruolo importante nel trasportomarittimo.
Essa possiede, infatti, il principale porto dell'isola dal quale partono tutti i traghetti per Zanzibar. Il villaggio possiede, inoltre, un ospedale e una scuola.
CHAKE CHAKE: E' la più grande città, o meglio villaggio,dell'isola.Situata a sud-est dell'isola, rappresenta lo snodo principaleper i trasporti sia su strada (bus) che via aerea: a pochi chilometri, infatti, vi è l'unico aeroporto dell'isola, il Chakechake Airport. Questa città, come le altre, riserva poche attrattive per il turista, eccetto alcune interessanti rovine di una delle più antiche città musulmane dell'Africa, Qanbalu vicino Ras Mkumbuu, risalenti probabilmente al VIII secolo. Il villaggio, inoltre, domina dall'alto la deliziona Chake Chake Bay, con il caratteristico mercato del pesce e con il suo porto al quale sono attraccate le tipiche imbarcazioni Dhow.

Dormiamo in nave come il resto dei passeggeri sdraiati a terra, il nostro vantaggio era avere un sacco a pelo. Improvvisamente verso le 4 del mattino la nave incomincia a ballare e ondeggia tantissimo, le bottiglie sul pavimento vanno da un lato all'altro. ci preoccupiamo sul serio. Giungiamo a Pemba con il levar del sole e cerchiamo un posto dove stare, lasciamo Mkoani e Chake-Chake siccome non troviamo un luogo adeguato dove stare e con un dala-dala ci dirigiamo a Wete. A Wete ci imbattiamo nella Sharook Guesthouse gestita da Kassim il ragazzo più simpatico e Buena Onda della Tanzania. Lui ci porta in un villaggio dove coltivano fiori di garofalo e palme da cocco. Gli chiedo di insegnarmi a salire sulle palme e ci provo con modesti risultati. Sulla terrazza della Sharook Guesthouse è possibile cenare (riso al cocco, ugali,.. e altre cose strane di cui non ricordo i nomi ma tutto buonissimo) mentre si osserva il meraviglioso volo crepuscolare dei Po-Po (dei pipistrelli che si nutrono di frutta, originari dell'isola di Pemba. detti anche volpe volante).
PEMBA ISLAND: Nota anche come Al Kuh Dra (l'isola verde), è un'isola della Tanzania, situata circa 50 chilometri a nord-est di Zanzibar, al largo della costa orientale dell'Africa, nell'Oceano Indiano. Dista circa 50 chilometri dalla costa.

È una delle isole delle spezie, insieme all'isola di Mafia (a sud di Zanzibar). Nel 2002, la popolazione dell'isola era stimata a circa 362.000 individui, distribuiti su un'area di 980 km². La maggior parte dell'isola, più collinosa e fertile di Zanzibar, è dominata da coltivazioni su piccola scala, mentre aree più estese sono dedicate a prodotti destinati a esportazione come i chiodi di garofano, di cui ci sono più di 3 milioni di piante. Il Canale di Pemba, che separa l'isola dal continente, è una delle aree più pescose dell'intera Africa, rinomato soprattutto per l'abbondanza di marlin e pescespada.
L'isola non conta molti visitatori, sebbene sia un centro di medicina tradizionale e di magia nera. Gli africani vengono addirittura dallo Zaire per incontrare gli stregoni waganga e farsi prescrivere cure; alcune fonti riportano che i waganga siano stati occasionalmente visitati anche da stregoni venuti da Haiti per imparare i segreti dei maestri di Pemba.
I portoghesi introdussero la battaglia dei tori nel XVII secolo. Ancora oggi viene praticata, anche se in una forma meno violenta e rispettosa degli animali e dei principi islamici.
Le città principali a Pemba sono Chake Chake, Mkoani, e Wete.
