The canton of Fribourg, also canton of Freiburg is located in western Switzerland. The canton is bilingual, with French spoken by two thirds of the citizens and German by about one third. Both are official languages in the canton. The canton takes its name from its capital city of Fribourg. The canton of Fribourg joined the Swiss Confederation in 1481. The area is made up of lands acquired by the capital Fribourg. The present extent was reached in 1803 when Murten (Morat) was acquired. The canton of Fribourg joined the separatist league of Catholic cantons in 1846 (Sonderbund). The following year, its troops surrendered to the federal army.
Lavaux
Lavaux is a region in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland, in the district of Lavaux-Oron. Lavaux consist of 830 hectares of terraced vineyards that stretch for about 30 km along the south-facing northern shores of Lake Geneva. Although there is some evidence that vines were grown in the area in Roman times, the actual vine terraces can be traced back to the 11th century, when Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries controlled the area. It benefits from a temperate climate, but the southern aspect of the terraces with the reflection of the sun in the lake and the stone walls gives a mediterranean character to the region. The main wine grape variety grown here is the Chasselas. Under cantonal law, the vineyards of Lavaux are protected from development. Since July 2007, Lavaux is a UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Since 2016, the vineyards of Lavaux are not treated with synthetic pesticides any more. There are many hikes possible through the vineyards of Lavaux. There is a hiking trail (Terrasses de Lavaux), going from Saint-Saphorin to Lutry, recommended by the Tourism Office of Switzerland.

Vevey is one of the “Pearls of the Swiss Riviera”. Its lakeside location with breathtaking views of the Alpine panorama, its extraordinarily mild climate, the vineyards, numerous excursion destinations in the region and proud paddlewheel steamers on the lake characterize this town by Lake Leman.
Vevey experienced its first heyday in the belle époque period at the end of the 19th century. Even today, majestic hotels and a flower-bedecked lakeside promenade lined with palm trees continue to serve as reminders of this age. But Vevey is also a modern, regional center which is headquarters to Nestlé, the international Food and Beverage Group. Its most famous inhabitant was probably the comedian Charlie Chaplin, who spent the last twenty five years of his life here. A monument dedicated to him stands on the lakeshore.

Les Avants is a village in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland. It is located in the municipality of Montreux, in the east of the canton, in the district of Vevey. It lies 3.5 km (2.2 mi) north-east of the town of Montreux and 25 km (16 mi) east of Lausanne.
Les Avants is also a winter resort in the Vaud Pre-alps. It hosted the first Ice Hockey European Championship, in 1910.
Ernest Hemingway relates in A Moveable Feast that he used to winter in Les Avants when he lived in Paris in the 1920s.
The village gives its name to the Chemin de fer Les Avants – Sonloup. Opened in 1901 as the first stage of the Montreux-Oberland Bernois, it connects Montreux to Les Avants and Sonloup, 0.5 km (0.31 mi) to the northwest. The village was home to the world-famous opera singer Dame Joan Sutherland and her husband, the conductor Richard Bonynge.
