Etruscan Necropolises of Tarquinia - UNESCO World Heritage Site

This UNESCO World Heritage site is a series of underground decorated tombs, just outside the town of Tarquinia near Rome. It shows us in great detail the cultural history of the Etruscan people, one of the tribes that occupied the area before the rise of Rome. Inside the tombs, we can see typical scenes of aristocratic and rural life - hunting, fishing, banqueting and dancing, and a couple of unusual surprises as well!

Necropolis of Banditaccia, Cerveteri, Roma, Lazio, Italy, Europe

The necropolis of Banditaccia is an Etruscan necropolis located on a tufaceous rise northwest of Cerveteri, in the province of Rome. The necropolis covers about 400 hectares and there are many thousands of burials (the fenced and visitable part represents only 10 hectares of extension and has about 400 tumuli), from the oldest of the Villanovan period (IX century BC) to the most recent from the Etruscan period (3rd century BC). Its origin is to be found in a nucleus of Villanovian tombs in the Cava della Pozzolana locality, and the name Banditaccia derives from the fact that from the end of the nineteenth century the area was banned, that is rented by tender, from the landowners of Cerveteri to favor of the local population. Given its grandeur, the Necropolis of Banditaccia is the largest ancient necropolis in the Mediterranean area. The oldest burials are Villanovian (from the ninth century BC to the eighth century BC), and are characterized by the shape of a well, where the ashes of the deceased were kept, or from the pits for burial. From the 7th century BC, the Etruscan period, there are two types of burial, those with a mound and those with a dice. The latter consist of a long line of tombs regularly lined up along sepulchral streets. In the visitable part of the Necropolis of Banditaccia there are two of these streets, Via dei Monti Ceriti and Via dei Monti della Tolfa, dating back to the 6th century BC The tumulus burials are characterized by a circular tuff-like structure that encloses a representation of the house of the deceased, complete with a corridor (dromos) to access the various rooms. The wealth of details in the interior of these graves has allowed archaeologists to learn about the Etruscan home uses.
For this purpose the best burial appears to be the tomb of the Reliefs, dating back to the 4th century BC and belonged to the family of the Matunas, as we read in the inscriptions: the inside of the tomb was kept in particularly good conditions, allowing to observe also the frescoes on the walls and on the columns. The most recent burials are from the 3rd century BC Many of the finds found in the necropolis are collected in the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia in Rome and in many other museums scattered all over the world, while only a small part of the funeral objects found loco is kept in the National Cerite Museum. Since July 2004, the necropolis of Banditaccia, along with that of the Monterozzi of Tarquinia, has become part of the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Cerveteri and Tarquinia - Italy Unesco World Heritage Site

Cerveteri is a town and comune of the northern Lazio, in the province of Rome. Originally known as Caere (also Caisra and Cisra), it is famous for a number of Etruscan necropoleis that include some of the best Etruscan tombs anywhere.Tarquinii (Etruscan Tarchnal) is said to have been already a flourishing city when Demaratus of Corinth brought in Greek workmen. It was the chief of the twelve cities of Etruria, and appears in the earliest history of Rome as the home of two of its kings, Tarquinius Priscus and Tarquinius Superbus. From it many of the religious rites and ceremonies of Rome are said to have been derived, and even in imperial times a collegium of sixty haruspices continued to exist there. The people of Tarquinii and Veii attempted to restore Tarquinius Superbus to the throne after his expulsion.

Etruscan Necropolis of Tarquinia, Italy - UNESCO World Heritage Site

My boys and I spent our 2021 summer holidays exploring Italy. One of the places we've visited on our tour was Tarquinia, an old city in the province of Viterbo, Lazio. The main attraction there is Monterozzi necropolis, the burial place of the ancient Etruscan civilization who inhabited this area of Italy from 900 BC to 29 BC.
The necropolis has about 6,000 graves, the oldest of which dates to the 7th century BC. About 200 of the tomb chambers are decorated with frescos and around 20 of them can be visited.
Because the necropolis is a great testimony to this ancient civilisation, UNESCO inscribed it to its World Heritage list in 2004.

Places to see in ( Tarquinia - Italy )

Tarquinia, formerly Corneto, is an old city in the province of Viterbo, Lazio, Italy known chiefly for its outstanding and unique ancient Etruscan tombs in the widespread necropoli or cemeteries which it overlies, for which it was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status.
In 1922 it was renamed after the ancient city of Tarquinii (Roman) or Tarch(u)na (Etruscan). Although little is visible of the once great wealth and extent of the ancient city, archaeology is increasingly revealing glimpses of past glories.

The Etruscan and Roman city is situated on the long plateau of La Civita to the north of the current town. The ancient burial grounds (necropoli), dating from the Iron Age (9th century BC, or Villanovan period) to Roman times, were on the adjacent promontories including that of today's Tarquinia.

The main necropolis of Tarchuna, part of which can be visited today, is the Monterozzi necropolis with some 6,000 tombs, at least 200 of which include beautiful wall paintings, and many of which were tumulus tombs with chambers carved in the rock below. The city towered above the Marta valley and was about 6 km from the sea. La Civita is made up of two adjoining plateaux, the pian di Civita and the pian della Regina, joined by a narrow saddle.

The Temple Ara della Regina measuring c. 44 × 25 m and dating to c. 4th-3rd century BC, it was built in tufa with wooden structures and decorations, notably the famous and exquisite frieze of winged horses in terracotta that is considered a masterpiece of Etruscan art. The large walls were built during the city's most prosperous period in the 6th century BC and measured about 8 km long, enclosing 135 ha, and long parts of the northern section are visible.

Alot to see in Tarquinia such as :

Tarquinia National Museum: with a large collection of archaeological finds, it is housed in the Renaissance Palazzo Vitelleschi, begun in 1436 and completed around 1480–1490.

The church of Santa Maria di Castello.
Santa Maria di Castello: church built 1121-1208 with Lombard and Cosmatesque influences. The façade has a small bell-tower and three entrances. The interior has a nave and two aisles, divided by massive pilasters with palaeo-Christian capitals and friezes. Noteworthy are also the rose-window in the nave and the several marble works by Roman masters.
Tarquinia Cathedral: once in Romanesque-Gothic style but rebuilt after the 1643 fire, it has maintained from the original edifice the 16th-century frescoes in the presbytery, by Antonio del Massaro
San Pancrazio: Gothic-Romanesque church
San Giacomo and Santissima Annunziata, churches showing different Arab and Byzantine influences
San Martino: 12th-century Romanesque church
San Giovanni Battista: 12th-century church with an elegant rose-window in the simple façade.
Communal Palace, in Romanesque style, begun in the 13th century and restored in the 16th
The numerous medieval towers, including that of Dante Alighieri
Palazzo dei Priori. The façade, remade in Baroque times, has a massive external staircase. The interior has a fresco cycle from 1429.

( Tarquinia - Italy ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Tarquinia . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Tarquinia - Italy

A Great Lunch in a Trattoria Near Cerveteri

We needed a solution for a weekend lunch and were not in the mood for experiments on empty stomachs so we went for the proven--Guiduccio. We been there before and knew exactly what we were getting.

Guiduccio is a no frills trattoria near Cerveteri, the land of Etruscans, run by Guiduccio and his family.

Here you'll probably never find a single tourist, but locals love it because you get authentic Roman food without paying an arm and a leg for it.

We had an antipasto consisting of afettati (a platter with prosciutto, cheese, etc.), rabbit, beans and sausage, and tripe. That was followed by three different types of first course--mezze maniche all'amatriciana, spaghettoni cacio e pepe and pappardelle alla norcina. Even though we were fried by that point we followed that with a grilled sausage, patate al forno and cicoria and finished it off with some home made cantucci e ciambelline.

All that went down with a wine that is not winning any contests but did an excellent job of accompanying our food.
