By the time I travelled from CATAMAYO to LOJA, ECUADOR it was dark and raining, in these conditions I would have to wait till the morning till I could see this city in all its glory. I checked into my HOTEL, grabbed some food and put my head down for the night.
I woke up 4AM the next day, my JETLAG not allowing me to get a proper nights sleep. I pulled on my clothes and ventured out into the city, my first taste of the ECUADORIAN lifestyle. Join me as I walk round this small and quaint city in Southern Ecuador. What a beautiful city.

A mountain bike ride from Loja to Catamayo, Ecuador
Heather and I took part in an event ride here in Loja that raised money for local girls who can't afford education. The ride was 50K and took us up to the wind turbines then down the other side of the mountains to Catamayo, where the airport is. The scenery is spectacular.

PAILAS ROTAS| Gonzanamá| Cóndor Huasi ¿cómo llegar?
El cantón Gonzanamá se encuentra localizado a 80 km aproximadamente de la ciudad de Loja. Cuenta con diversos atractivos turísticos, en el video de hoy les presento dos de ellos.

- PRIMER DESTINO
CUEVAS DEL CÓNDOR HUASI O CASA DEL CÓNDOR.
Está localizado en el trayecto entre Catamayo y Gonzanamá, en un barrio llamado el Portete, perteneciente a la parroquia Nambacola.
- Ubicado aproximadamente a 15km antes de llegar a la cabecera cantonal.
- SEGUNDO DESTINO
PAILAS ROTAS
Este atractivo ya ha sido popularizado en los últimos años, se ubica entre el trayecto de Gonzanamá a Cariamanga.
- Ubicado aproximadamente a 10km desde Gonzanamá.
- Para llegar a tal destino se puede ingresar por el sector de Luginuma o Lanzaca, recomiendo entrar por Lanzaca por el estado de la vía.
La idea principal era recorrer más lugares, pero quedará para un próximo video! :D
Radio Waves: Our visit to the radio towers near Loja, Ecuador
In this video we take a visit to some radio tower to the north of the windmills located here in Loja, Ecuador. These towers sit at about 2880 metres (9500 ft) above sea level. From this vantage point you get a birds eye view of the city of Loja and the Catamayo valley. Is is an easy walk of about an hour one way. Just remember to bring a jacket!

The entrance to the towers is just west of the Windmills. If you look for this altar you can’t miss it.
While it is possible to drive about half way up to the towers, we chose to park the car near the bottom and walk up. The road has a very gentle slope and is a relatively easy walk. Besides which there are so many interesting things to see on the way up, not to mention we need the exercise.
As you can see from these photos, there is a good reason why it is not possible to drive to the top at this time. Heavy rains earlier in the year caused a number of landslides all along the route. Some are worse than others. The largest began near the top of the mountain and continued all the way down onto the highway and beyond. It was in fact one of these landslides that we crossed in the beginning of the video.
Despite this, it is possible to walk or ride a motorcycle around or over all of these obstructions. Perhaps in the future they will be cleared. Just use caution and watch for falling debri.
As you can see in these fotos the views of the Catamayo valley and the windmills are awesome. At one point you will be right on top of the northernmost wind turbine. A spectacular view indeed!
Although the terrain was very dry for the most part, we did notice that it became a lot wetter in the shadow of the mountain. There was also very little wind on the western side of the mountain.
As you turn the corner near the windmills, however, there is an abrupt change in the intensity of the wind. As I mentioned in “Blowing in the wind” our video about the Villonaco wind farm, there is a good reason the windmills are up here. In fact we would advise against taking this hike if it is really windy. It can also be very cold, so you will want to pack a warm jacket and a hat of some kind.
After you turn the corner, the city of Loja comes into view with some spectacular vistas as you can see from these fotos. If you make the climb to the more remote towers pictured here, there is a 360 degree view of both valleys.
An old communication facility sits atop the first hill. It seems to be in a state of disrepair but may still be functioning. There is a gate at the entrance but it was open the day we visited. If you do visit just remember that this is private property and so you will want to respect that.
We also encountered some interesting plants both on the way up and at the top. Some may only grow at these altitudes. You will definitely want to stop and smell the roses so to speak on this hike.
We hope you have enjoyed taking this hike with us. If you get the chance to make it yourself, you will find that it is well worth the effort.
