11 Best Things to Do in Monterey, California

Get exclusive discounts on your trip at the link below:

If you're interested in moving to the Monterey area or want to learn more about the area check out the channel - Living in Monterey, California below:

What are the best things to do in Monterey, California? Good question. Monterey is a small city in California that was once the capital of Spanish California from 1770 to 1882. It now has many historical sites and modern attractions. At one time, Monterey was an important city in the fish canning industry, but that all collapsed with the disappearance of the sardine. Monterey and the surrounding area have attracted artists since the late 19th-century, and many celebrated painters and writers have lived in the area.

During this time, Monterey hosted California's first theater, public building, public library, publicly-funded school, printing-press, and newspaper. It was originally the only port of entry for all taxable goods in California. Cannery Row, originally the fish packing area, is now a beautiful restored neighborhood, with shops and restaurants. Also along the waterfront are Fisherman's Wharf and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Nearby, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve in Carmel and 17-Mile Drive offer some lovely coastal scenery.

The California sea otter, a threatened subspecies, inhabits the local Monterey Bay marine environment, and a field station of The Marine Mammal Center is located in Monterey to support sea rescue operations in this section of the California coast. The rare San Joaquin kit fox is found in Monterey's oak-forest and chaparral habitats. Sea otters, seals, sea lions, and during the winter months, whales, are all common and welcomed sights. Now, Monterey is a hotspot for tourists and locals alike who enjoy the beautiful ocean views, good food, art and history.

But for those that don’t know the area, what are the best things to do in Monterey? Well, join us as we go through the eleven best things to do in Monterey, California. Whether you’re a local, a returning visitor, or are planning to go there for the first time, check out our list and see if there’s anything that tickles your fancy.

Day Trip to Uvalde ✈️ (FULL EPISODE) S10 E7

Out west of San Antonio, this town is rich in Texas heritage. It's a wild town sitting where the Hill Country meets West Texas and South Texas, giving it a feel that is uniquely Uvalde.

John Nance Garner was Speaker of the US House and Vice President under FDR. Dolph Briscoe was the Governor of Texas. Both were Texan, both were bigger than life and you can learn about both of them here at this museum in Garner’s old home.

You can find pieces of Governor Briscoe’s extravagant art collection in the strangest place — at the First State Bank of Uvalde. Part bank, part museum, you can take a tour of the incredible art pieces that include Remington and Rembrandt original paintings.

Don’t let the outer exterior of this small, wooden shack scare you away. Inside is truly authentic Mexican cuisine and some of the best gorditas in South Texas. Made from scratch, these doughy pockets are filled with tasty goodies. If you’re brave, try the mollejas gordita (cow thyroid glands).

You don’t have to be a pilot to enjoy this airport cafe. Once an active military training facility, Garner Field Airport now hosts a small diner where you can watch planes take off over a beer and a burger. It’s the perfect food to fuel your adventure — literally! Pilots can get the $100 Burger deal, with their choice of any burger and $100 worth of jet fuel.

Towering bluffs. Crystal clear water. Pebble beaches. What more could you need on a hot afternoon? It’s crowded in the summer and secluded in the winter, but either way it’s the ideal oasis in the middle of all that West Texas scrub.

The Ox Ranch is your one-stop-shop for going completely WILD — whether you want to hunt for exotic animals or you’re looking to shoot something with a little more FIRE POWER. This may be the only place that you can drive and shoot old army tanks, including what’s regarded as the “Best Sherman left in the world.” It’s insanely awesome!

Day Trip to Nocona ⚾️ (FULL EPISODE) S9 E10

Nocoana Boot Factory was started by Enid Justin (daughter of Justin Boots owner) in 1925. And though it no longer makes boots, you can stop by to buy some Nocona Boots at a shop inside. It’s also the location for the Nokona American Ballgloves and an awesome brewery.

Fenoglio’s has been keeping the boot tradition alive since the 1880s, and there’s a reason they’ve been around so long. Not only can you find quality boots, but you’re sure to find a variety of boots — from bison to elephant — that are very colorful and one-of-a-kind!

Sadly the Homage to Things That Suck, with a line of vacuum cleaners bearing signs that say things like cancer, taxes and bullies, has permanently closed.

TALES N' TRAILS MUSEUM: Find the history of Montague County at this museum where you can also learn more about the leather history of Nocona and even see ancient artifacts from the prehistoric days! It’s also home to the largest private collection of arrowheads in public view, with over 10 thousand on display!

Head about 20 minutes north of town to see the historic Red River Station, one of the most important stops on the Chisholm trail, where the cattle crossed the Red River into Oklahoma.

RED RIVER PIZZERIA:In downtown Nocona, you’ll the best of all pairings — authentic Italian pizza and Texas wine. Take one bite of their pizza, which is thin crust and just the right amount of sauce, and you’ll swear you’re in Italy! Get “The Murph” to try a little bit of everything and don’t skip out on the “Rico Road” dessert pizza.

Stop into Fenoglio’s for great barbecue served up by the town’s mayor! And this joint might just be the only place you can get a good bowl of crap — seriously! Dig into this bowl filled with sliced sausage, brisket, hamburger meat, onions, peppers and beans. It’s got an unappetizing name, but it’s one of the best meals you’ll have

Day Trip to Castroville ???????? (FULL EPISODE) S13 E11

The fingerprints of 19th-century European explorers and settlers can be seen all over Texas, but there isn't anywhere else quite like Castroville. Established by Alsatian immigrants, Castroville is unique with its distinctive historical treasures, French/German/Alsatian food, and beautiful public parks.

Established in 1974, Haby’s has been baking some of the best cakes, pastries, and bread in Medina County. Located in historic Castroville, it’s the best place to buy quality baked goods, including French bread, croissants, and other heirloom recipe-produced delicacies.

For over 30 years now, Dziuk’s Meat Market has been proudly serving customers their quality fresh cuts, famous dried meats, and utterly unique (and delicious!) raw meat parisa. They also offer processing services for hunters, as well as lots of groceries and deli offerings.

Established and run by Louisiana natives and Alsatian descendants, Paris St. Po’Boys offers the best and freshest cajun cuisine in the area. Their po’boys are made with authentic New Orleans bread, and they also offer boudin, alligator, and other creole specialties.

Landmark Inn tells the story of migration, industry, and preservation in Texas. The site is very large and you can easily spend a whole afternoon exploring the museum and all of the old buildings.

The Steinbach Hus (house) was originally built between 1618 and 1648 in Wahlbach, France, in the Alsatian style. It took four years to dissemble, relocate, rebuild, and restore the Steinbach Hus. It arrived by truck in Castroville (as a gift from the Alsatian French government) in 1998, and is now open for visitors.

Castroville Regional Park consists of 126 wooded acres on the banks of the beautiful turquoise Rio Medina (Medina River). The park is surrounded by a walking trail and includes lots of amenities like grills, picnic tables, sports fields, and pavilions. And don’t forget to head up the hill to take in the overlook over the city!

Castroville | San Antonio Missions | Texas Travel Vlog | August 2022

It is interesting to learn that Texas had a large immigration of German and French settlers, and their influences are still tangible today all over Texas. And

The San Antonio River winds past four Spanish missions built over three centuries ago that are still active religious sites today and whose locations have become a popular leisurely trail connecting it all the way to Downtown Riverwalk.

For lunch, I had initially planned on going to Sammy’s Restaurant but changed my mind because I wanted to check out another barbecue place in San Antonio since it was our last day! We went to B&B Smokehouse…. but boy-oh-boy!!!! It was packed, albeit it was on a Sunday at 1 PM ???? We didn’t try to wait, just moved on to another awesome barbecue place.
