Cerchiara di Calabria is a town in the province of Cosenza (Calabria region), part of the Calabria region of southern Italy, located in the Pollino National Park, Cercharia occupies the ancient site of Arponium in Magna Graecia, later known as Circlarium.
The town's main attraction is the Sanctuary of S. Maria delle Armi. The cells of hermit monks of Greek origin on Monte Sellario were already established by the 10th century.
Near the city there is the Cave of Nimphs (grotta delle ninfe) an ancient source of sulphurous water that forms therapeutic mud and now flows into a thermal pool.

I thought that Campora San Giovanni looked like a nice place to spend a few days and I spent a few days there! It is a village on the Tyrrhenian Sea coast of Calabria, Italy, a part of Amantea for administrative purposes. The town is new and has wide modern streets, the only building of any age is a fourteenth century tower. I go up into the hills above the town which offers wonderful views of the Tyrrhenian Sea!

That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!

Castrovillari is a very nice town on the fringe of the Pollino national park with all round mountains views of the Pollino to the north and Silla range to the south. It also has charming architecture and a medieval castle. I was very impressed by this town. Few tourists stop there, which is a pity as it has so much to offer as can be seen in this film!

Calabria italy
Calabria, in southwest Italy, occupies the toe of the country’s boot-shaped peninsula. It's a sun-baked region of rugged mountains, old-fashioned villages and dramatic coastline, with many popular beaches. Coastal Reggio Calabria, its largest city, is home to the Museo Archeologico Nazionale and its Riace Bronzes, a famous pair of Greek warriors dating back to the 5th century B.C.E.

I leave Castrovillari and continue my journey north through the Pollino Mountains. I particularly like this range of mountains, I comment a couple of times that I find the views and drive even better than those in the Alps! This is the border of Calabria and Basilicata in southern Italy and in 1992 it was included in the Pollino National Park which I believe is the largest national park in Europe (I may be wrong about that). The range and park is named after Monte Pollino 2,248 m but the highest point is Serra Dolcedorme at 2,267 m which overlooks the plain of Sibari. Despite the height of these mountains, have a look at a map and see how close it is to the Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas. The Pollino is home to a large number of interesting species including wolves and I very much hope that I will get the chance to see more of it!
This is part of a very long journey in May and June 2013 from Brucoli in Sicily to Bełżec on the Polish - Ukrainian border. From there I travelled to the UK - so the journey was much longer but I did not film the part from eastern Poland to Norwich (UK).
