CASTLEMAiNE HERiTAGE WALK ~ Victoria 2022

#Castlemaine #Castlemainehistoricwalk #Castlemainevictoria

Peter and Joseph walk the street of Castlemaine to show you the architecture of this beautiful town which was proclaimed in 1853 and a municipality in 1855.

Castlemaine is a small country town in Victoria, Australia, in the Goldfields region about 120 kilometres (75 miles) northwest by road from Melbourne
@TourismServices01

On 20 July 1851 gold was discovered near present-day Castlemaine (Mt Alexander Goldfields) at Specimen Gully on Barkers Creek. The gold was discovered by Christopher Thomas Peters, a shepherd and hut-keeper on the Barker's Creek, in the service of Dr William Barker on his Mount Alexander run. When the gold was shown in the men's quarters, Peters was ridiculed for finding fool's gold, and the gold was thrown away. Barker did not want his workmen to abandon his sheep, but in August they did just that. John Worley, George Robinson and Robert Keen, also in the employ of Barker as shepherds and a bullock driver, immediately teamed with Peters in working the deposits by panning in Specimen Gully where the gold had been found, which they did in relative privacy during the next month. When Barker sacked them and ran them off his land for trespass, Worley, on behalf of the party to prevent them getting in trouble, mailed a letter to The Argus (Melbourne) dated 1 September 1851 announcing this new goldfield with the precise location of their workings. This letter was published on 8 September 1851. With this obscure notice, rendered still more so by the journalist as 'Western Port', were ushered to the world the inexhaustible treasures of Mount Alexander also to become known as the Forest Creek diggings. Within a month there were about 8,000 diggers working the alluvial beds of the creeks near the present day town of Castlemaine, and particularly Forest Creek which runs through Chewton where the first small village was established. By the end of the year there were about 25,000 on the field.

VICTORIAN DAY TRIPS | KYNETON, HANGING ROCK AND CASTLEMAINE | VANLIFE AUSTRALIA | Travel Vlog - ep34

Welcome to our channel, and welcome to KYNETON, HASNGING ROCK, DAYLESFORD AND CASTLEMAINE! | VANLIFE AUSTRALIA | Travel Vlog

???? PLEASE SUBSCRIBE FOR MORE VIDEOS AND TO KEEP US TRAVELLING! ????

01:00 Starting off Day trip 1 in Kyneton, with a coffee (of course!), a stroll down the street, and a walk in the Botanical Gardens. Loved the table tennis table in the middle of the park!

02:49 Hanging Rock - We had a picnic at Hanging Rock.........and didn't disappear! This unique rock formation was made famous from a novel depicting the disappearance of schoolgirls on a picnic here in the early 1900's. Later made into a movie in the 1970's, Picnic at Hanging Rock, although thought to be a true story is actually a work of fiction.

08:40 Day Trip 2 begins

10:15 Sault @ Daylesford

12:58 - The Convent @ Daylesford - A former convent (as the name suggests!) and boarding school, now turned into a cafe, museum, art gallery and more. Mmmmmmmm coffee.....

14:12 Chocolate Mill.....who needs a reason to stop for chocolate right?

15:07 The Mill at Castlemaine - The Vintage Bazaar. This complex had soooo much..... firstly the bazaar which had a collection of weird and whacky, but also practical and useful odds, ends, clothes and gifts. Also alongside the bazaar is a wine maker, a brewer, a bakery, a grocer, a butcher and a nice Austrian Restaurant (Der Kaffeehaus)......highly recommend a beer and the Schnitzel Burger.......yum

16:26 XXXX Antique Complex - a collection of 7 antique stores together.....we just went inside 2, one dedicated to crockery (not shown!) and this Automobilia antique store / memorabilia shop that costs $5 to enter, but is taken off your purchase if you buy anything. This is filled with (pun intended) petrol pumps, old cars bits, as well as lots of paraphernalia from yesteryear such as cigarette boxes, old tills, old tool and the likes.
