SICILY Ultimate Travel Guide 2024 | All Tourist Attractions | Italy

Sicily (Sicilia) is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and one of the 20 regions of Italy. Sicily has 5 million inhabitants, with Palermo as its capital and Mount Etna as its most famous landmark. Sicily is located in the central Mediterranean Sea, south of the Italian Peninsula, from which it is separated by the narrow Strait of Messina.
For centuries it has been the crossroads of Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The imprints left throughout the past centuries from all these diverse cultures has created Sicily’s unique identity, rich in history and extraordinary food. Today, Sicily is home to 7 UNESCO World Heritage sites and attracts over 15 million tourists each year.

The ULTIMATE SICILY ROAD TRIP - Taormina, Ortigia, Agrigento, Erice & MORE (Italy’s Hidden Gems)

Welcome to Sicily, Italy's southern island nestled in the heart of the Mediterranean. While Italy attracts millions of tourists each year, many tend to focus on its more iconic cities and regions. Sicily is by no means a hidden gem, but it certainly provides a more authentic and less crowded Italian experience. With its alluring mix of ancient ruins, charming coastal towns, and delicious cuisine, this is the Italy we've been looking for. We are so lucky that Tommy’s parents are joining us on this unforgettable roadtrip as we go beyond the usual tourist hotspots and immerse ourselves in the Sicilian culture.

Our first destination was the enchanting town of Taormina. In this picturesque, cliffside town, there was so much to do. We visited Isola Bella, a stunning island just off the coast, indulged in incredible dishes like the iconic Bam Bar granitas and pistachio pasta, and delved into the rich history at the ancient amphitheater.

We then headed to Ortigia, a charming island brimming with character and history. Strolling through the streets, we discovered the vibrant outdoor market, where local vendors displayed an array of fresh produce, artisanal crafts, spices, and FRESH seafood. The market's lively atmosphere was sensory overload, and we couldn't resist sampling some of the incredible seafood. The culinary scene in Ortigia, especially its exceptional seafood, makes it an unmissable highlight on any Sicily road trip.

Agrigento's Valley of the Temples stands as an essential stop on a Sicily journey. This ancient archaeological site has well-preserved Greek ruins that transport visitors back in time. We went at sunset for ideal lighting and a great atmosphere.

Erice, a hilltop town in Sicily, is a must-visit destination. With its cobblestone streets and medieval architecture, the town offers a charming and historic atmosphere. We tried the local cookies, which were so yummy. The town's unique blend of history and culinary delights makes it a memorable stop on any Sicilian itinerary.

We spent a couple nights in Castellammare del Golfo, a charming town on the northwest coast of Sicily.

We ended our road trip spending few days by the sea near Messina, providing a perfect place to reflect on our incredible Sicilian adventure.

Journey Through Sicily - Italy Travel Documentary

Sicily has been at the crossroads of civilizations for centuries and is one of Italy’s most interesting and beautiful places to visit.
The first 1,000 people to use the link will get a 1 month free trial of Skillshare:

Located at the center of the Mediterranean Sea, the island’s identity has been formed by cultures and traditions from Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. Distinctly different from mainland Italy, Sicily offers stunning architecture, ancient archaeological sites, lively urban centers, spectacular natural scenery, delicious food, and friendly people.

In this video, I’m traversing Sicily, exploring some of the island’s most beautiful places. From the bustling streets of Palermo to the impressive baroque churches of Noto. From historic Greek temples in Agrigento to the religious celebrations around Catania’s festival of Saint Agatha. From peaceful nature reserves of Trapani to seaside towns of Scopello and Taormina. And from the stormy coastal city of Siracusa to the slopes of Mount Etna volcano.

This travel documentary was made in February 2023, when I had the chance to travel around Sicily for 2,5 weeks.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We start our journey in Catania, a dynamic city with plenty of cultural and historic sights. The highlight here is the Festival of Saint Agatha, one of Europe’s most impressive religious celebrations. Not far from here is Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe, that we visit while covered in snow. Neary Acireale is known for its spectacular carnival, one of the best in Italy.

We drive up the coast towards Taormina, a popular holiday destination with stunning mountain vistas, charming beaches, and a captivating ancient Greek theatre. In Siracusa, we encounter a massive storm that completely changed the atmosphere of this beautiful city. It’s in Noto that we admire the exceptional baroque architecture this corner of Sicily is famous for.

Through the hilltop village of Enna, located in a broad valley with panoramic vistas, we reach Agrigento, to visit the amazing Valley of the Temples. We briefly walk along the beach at Scala di Turchi, peculiar rock formations made of marl, before stopping in the fishing port of Sciacca, just in time to meet the fishermen returning to the town.

Poggioreale and Cretto di Burri are stark reminders of the earthquake that hit the Valle del Belice. Further West, we find the salt pans of Saline di Trapani, a protected nature reserve that was once the most important salt production site in Europe. A steep road up leads us to Erice, a medieval town with 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape.

We travel onwards to the Gulf of Castellemare, a region filled with attractive villages and rugged coastal scenery, and visit places like San Vito La Capo and Scopello. We finish this journey in Palermo, the vibrant capital city of Sicily, to explore the lively street markets, eat some delicious food, and admire the striking buildings.

Renting and Driving a car in Sicily

All you need to know about renting and driving a car in Sicily, with information about the needed driving license, speed limits, parking, where to rent for the best deal, petty crime, traffic and a comparison with public transportation.

My suggested website to rent a car:
It's a comparative website (similar to Airbnb) providing the best deals around, you will not be disappointed!

IMPORTANT! Remember to fully insure your car to have a smooth experience
Full Guide about RENTING a car in SICILY:

In the video I mentioned that Brits need an IDP, but it's not correct. You can drive if you have a valid UK driving licence. I asked a few renters and I had mixed answers, however, checking the government websites (May 23) there is no problem. My suggestion is to bring a copy of the present rules to the Rental Agencies.

Street Food in Italy - Sicily

Siracusa, hometown of Archimedes and a Street Food artist.

Sicily SUCKS, why we hated it!

We spent two weeks in Sicily in July and after all the research that I had done I thought it was going to AMAZING! Just like being on a Greek Island I thought. Boy was I wrong. I must admit there were parts of Sicily that were gorgeous, but not all of it. Watch and see what to hit and what to miss when going to Sicily.
