Castelbuono - a wonderful surprise south of Cefalù [Fiasconaro panettone & Nangalarruni]

This is a place to fall in love with! Castelbuono would surprise you already while you're headed towards it. The views that open while driving, are magical. You enter a part of Sicily, which is 100% preserved in nature and atmosphere. ❤️

Did you know that in Castelbuono you find the exclusive panettone of Fiasconaro? It represents true craftsmanship and passion for this famous sweet bread, which in fact is a tradition born in Lombardia, but which the Fiasconaro family believed could be produced and established locally - in Sicily, right in Castelbuono! And yes, the products of Fiasconaro taste incredibly, as you will witness - judged by own experience. ????

For a late light lunch we rumbled into Nangalarruni, as it was one of few places open at that particular hour. Imagine our surprise when it showed to be a Michelin Guide restaurant. The result - an exquisite lunch of local dishes innovatively approached, in a nice familiar atmosphere, offered at a fair price.

Come along on all incredible encounters of this day full of fun surprises!

Messina's Marvels: Top 10 Things to Do in Messina (Sicily) On a Budget

My first dream was to live and work in Sicily!
And now, against all odds, I stand on the cobblestone streets of Messina, the first chapter of my Sicilian adventure. Prepare to embark on an unforgettable journey through its streets, where history and flavors merge into an intoxicating symphony. 10 places to visit, 3 places to eat and 2 to drink in Messina, Sicily. Everything on a budget!

Messina, a coastal city in Sicily, Italy, boasts a rich history spanning millennia. Founded by Greeks, it flourished under Roman rule. Its strategic location made it a Mediterranean trading hub. Throughout centuries, it experienced Byzantine, Arab, and Norman conquests. A catastrophic earthquake and tsunami struck in 1908, reshaping its landscape. Messina played a role in World War II, and post-war reconstruction transformed it into a modern city while preserving ancient remnants. Today, it stands as a blend of ancient charm and contemporary life, reflecting its enduring resilience through the ups and downs of time.

Story of Testa di moro / Moor's Head
There are many variations of the legend behind these elegant, hand-painted ceramic decorative vases. Two are most prevalent and both tell a story of passion, betrayal, jealousy and revenge.

During the time of the Moor domination in Sicily, a Saracen merchant falls in love with a beautiful local girl in the Arab quarter of Palermo, Kalsa. Their love blazed fiercely until the maiden stumbled upon a secret - her lover had a hidden family in distant lands. Consumed by jealousy and fury, she ended his life while he slept, severing his head in the belief it would bind him to her forever. She used the head as a vase to grow a beautiful basil plant within, watering the plant with her tears. As the plant flourished, the intoxicating smell of basil made her neighbours envious and they sought to replicate the bountiful fertility, crafting vibrant clay head pots with the same features as the Moor's Head.

In the other version, the girl's family discovers the love between a noble Sicilian girl and a young Arab. Her family punishes them both by beheading them. Their heads are then turned into vases and hung as warnings on a balcony. The heads represent the impossible love of a young couple and are always made in pairs.

A CASTELBUONO per il tour GASTRONOMICO... Mangiamo l'impossibile!!! - Viaggio in Sicilia - MADONIE
