Places to see in ( Mantova - Italy ) Castello San Giorgio
The castle of San Giorgio is one of the most representative monuments of the city of Mantua and is part of the Reggia dei Gonzaga. Built on the ruins of the church of Santa Maria di Capo di Bove from 1395 and completed in 1406 on commission of Francesco I Gonzaga and designed by Bartolino da Novara , the castle of San Giorgio is a square-shaped building consisting of four corner towers and surrounded by a moat with three doors and relative drawbridges , aimed at defending the city.
The architect Luca Fancelli , in 1459 on the recommendation of the Marquis Ludovico III Gonzaga , who freed the rooms of the Corte Vecchia for the Council promoted by Pius II , restructured the castle that definitively lost its primitive military and defensive function. For many years the manor house was the residence of Isabella d'Este , wife of Francesco II Gonzaga , one of the most famous noblewomen of the Renaissance . Isabella wanted at the court numerous artists and humanists of the time, such as Andrea Mantegna , Perugino , Leonardo da Vinci , Ludovico Ariosto andBaldassarre Castiglione , making Mantua one of the major European courts and artistic and literary center. In the prisons of the castle the condottiere Paolo Vitelli was closed again in 1496 , taken prisoner by Francesco II Gonzaga. The castle, along with other adjacent buildings, remains the prince's residence for about a century, until the time when Guglielmo Gonzaga will move his apartments into the restored Old Court.
In 1810 the Tyrolean patriot Andreas Hofer was imprisoned in the prisons of the manor before being executed. Starting from 1815 with the Austrian occupation of the city, the castle became the maximum security prison in which the opponents were closed. From 1852 in the castle were enclosed the Martyrs of Belfiore and some patriots attached to them ( Ciro Menotti , Teresa Arrivabene ). The earthquake of Emilia in 2012 caused structural damage to the building.

Camera degli Sposi .
The Camera Picta (Camera degli Sposi), a wonderful room on the main floor of the north-eastern tower of the castle of San Giorgio, is the work of Andrea Mantegna . The Mantegna has made it over a period of nine years, from 1465 (date engraved on the wall) to 1475 (date engraved on the commemorative plaque at the entrance of the hall), and readjusted the narrow space of the cubic room with vaults on lunettes in a succession of reality and fiction giving the environment an en plein air atmosphere (thus giving an idea of being in a false loggia). The space of each wall of the room was divided by the artist into three openingsthat transmit to the spectator, through wide arches, bucolic landscapes and curtains moved by the wind a strong antithesis with the reduced architectural environment. The frescoes have been made either dry (north wall, this technique allows a meticulous care of details) or fresh (south wall, the fresco obliges the painter to opt for a more synthetic taste). There are two painted scenes depicting members of the Gonzaga family , the Scene of the Encounter and the Scene of the Court . With them Mantegna pays tribute to the patrons that so many clients have procured for him. In the room, you can not stand more than 5-10 minutes because (using the technique of dry painting) the humidity and the exhaled air

Orvieto, Italy- a Charming Hilltop Town! Located in Umbria Italy
Orvieto is located in the Umbria Region of Italy and was the perfect stop for us to explore as we traveled from Rome to Florence. Orvieto was the alternate offered to our tour group since the visit inside the colosseum was canceled. This town has so much to see I was disappointed we only had about 1-1/2 hour to roam the town. The Orvieto Cathedral: Duomo Di Orvieto was the most stunning cathedral I have ever seen!
Orvieto is one of the oldest inhabited areas in Italy dating back to the Etruscan civilization that settled here in the 9th century. I recently learned that there is a series of tunnels and caves all underneath Orvieto available for touring.

Oh Italy... every time I visit, you blow my mind! We had no expectations about Bari and the Puglia region in general, but we fell in love since the very first minute! This has to be one of Italy's most underestimated regions. I don't understand why more people don't come here!
Did you know Italy is my favorite country? I have a weird connection with it. I don't know if it's the food, the language, the history, the sights, but it's a country I fell in love with since the first time I visited when I was 19... many many years ago!!! (I'm 35)
We hope you enjoy this Bari Italy vlog! We didn't really have a plan here, but somehow we ended up trying all the best foods and it honestly felt like being on vacation. We can't wait to be back to Italy!

10. Paestum
Paestum is a Greek settlement where you can find the best preserved Greek doric temples worldwide. Most of the ancient Greek city has not been excavated yet. Besides three temples, the side has a gymnasium, city wall and tower ruins and plenty of house wall ruins. Part of the site is also a museum showing excavated items such as statues, vases, metalwork, and painted grave stones.
9. Ravello
A peaceful area with a small population, Ravello offers stunning views of the Mediterranean. Visit their renowned gardens, Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo, and their spectacular Duomo, the Cathedral of Ravello, which is located in Vescovado Square. During summer months the city hosts the annual Ravello Festival, an event started in 1953 in honor of Richard Wagner and continued as a celebration of local art and music.
8. Capri
The small Italian island of Capri is situated 5 km from the mainland in the Bay of Naples, a celebrated beauty spot and coastal resort since the days of the Roman Republic until now. Capri, known in Greek mythology as the isle of the sirens, was a favored resort of the Roman emperors. Most notoriously, the emperor Tiberius had his villa on the island, the location (supposedly) of debauched orgies.
7. Pompeii & Herculaneum
Pompeii is in Campania, Italy, not far from Naples. Its major attraction is the ruined ancient Roman city of the same name, which was engulfed by Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This site is considered to be one of the few sites where an ancient city has been preserved in detail.
6. Certosa di San Martino
Certosa di San Martino, a former monastery complex, now a museum. It is the most visible landmark of the city, perched atop the Vomero hill that commands the gulf. A Carthusian monastery, it was finished and inaugurated under the rule of Queen Joan I in 1368. Today, the buildings house a museum with a display of Spanish and Bourbon era artifacts, as well as displays of the presepe—Nativity scene—considered to be among the finest in the world.
5. Capodimonte Museum
It hosts paintings from the 13th to the 18th centuries including major works by Simone Martini, Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, Masaccio, Sandro Botticelli, Lorenzo Lotto, Giovanni Bellini, Giorgio Vasari, El Greco, Jacob Philipp Hackert. It is also the place where are hosted the works of the most important Neapolitan painters, like Jusepe de Ribera, Luca Giordano, the Neapolitan Caravaggisti.
4. Museo Archeologico Nazionale
It is the most important Italian archaeological museum, and it contains a large collection of Roman artifacts from Pompeii, Stabiae and Herculaneum. The collection includes works of the highest quality produced in Greek, Roman and Renaissance times.
3. Duomo (Naples Cathedral)
Naples Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral, the main church of Naples, southern Italy, and the seat of the Archbishop of Naples. It is widely known as the Cattedrale di San Gennaro, in honour of Saint Januarius, the city's patron saint, but is actually dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
2. Castel Nuovo
It is a medieval castle and the main symbol of the architecture of the city. It was first begun in 1279 by Charles I of Anjou and completed three years later. Castel Nuovo soon became the nucleus of the historical center of the city, and was often the site of famous events. For example, on December 13, 1294, Pope Celestine V resigned as pope in a hall of the castle. The event was famously depicted by Dante Alighieri in his masterpiece la Divina Commedia, in the verse Colui che per viltade fece il gran rifiuto.
1. Palazzo Reale
Palazzo Reale is one of the four residences used by the Bourbon Kings of Naples during their rule of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies (1730-1860). The Royal Palace is on the site of an earlier building meant to host King Philip III of Spain, who however never made the trip. The architect chosen for that palace was Domenico Fontana. The building was put up on the site of an even older Spanish viceroyal residence from the early 16th century.

Aragonese Castle is a castle in Reggio Calabria enlarged to its current extent by Ferdinand I of Aragon. The Aragonese castle of Reggio Calabria is the main fortification of the city, located in the homonymous Piazza Castello between Via Aschenez and Via Possidonea . Together with the Riace Bronzes , it is considered one of the main historical symbols of the city of Reggio . Since 1956 it houses the observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics.
Although universally known as Aragonese, the castle of Reggio actually has much more ancient origins, traces of a fortification of this area of the city in fact date back to times of much earlier than the construction of the actual castle.
Today the hill on which the fortress stands is much less evident, but in antiquity it represented an important point for the protection of the system of the walls. Most probably, the belt of the palaiapolis (the palèpoli which was the archaic city founded in the 8th century BC by the Calcidesi ) had, as the lower corner of the walls that descended from the acropolis , the area of the current castle. In the Hellenistic period, with the enlargement of the city towards the sea, the hill remained a fortified place of considerable military importance, while the walls, which in the polis of the classical era bent to the north, now descended to the port; the archaeological site of the Greek Walls on theMatteotti seafront shows the corner of the belt.
In Roman times, during the imperial period, the walls were probably not cured and restored, given the prosperity enjoyed by the empire, and the most important forts along the walls were abandoned to their fate. Under Emperor Justinian I , during the war between the Goths and the Byzantines , Belisarius entered Reggio to free it from the barbarians and found the city devoid of fortifications, so the general immediately ordered the restoration of the city walls. He could not in fact allow the city to be unguarded given the important role that the port of Reggio held in the connections between Italy and Constantinople . So the lower part of the walls that were resting on the port, the hill of the castle, resumedit then became the angular bastion of the boundary, facing the mountain. All this created a fortified center that protected the port of Reggio and all of southern Calabria . The documented existence of a real castle dates back to the year 536 .
Despite numerous interventions, the appearance of the castle remained almost unchanged since the time of Ferdinand I until it was decided to reconvert the barracks that led to the demolition of the ravelin with the unification of the internal floor; during the Risorgimento, the Aragonese castle became a political prison and a place for the rebels' execution.
In 1860 , the city and the castle were conquered by Giuseppe Garibaldi , then with the unification of Italy and the new town plan (drawn up in 1869 ), the bastion was considered a foreign body in the new urban structure, if desired in its place draw a large square. This sparked disputes between those who wanted to demolish the castle to make disappear the last testimony of Spanish rule and those who wanted to prevent its demolition because it is a historical monument of ancient and important city memories. The idea of the Municipality of Reggio - which in 1874 bought it from the Government to demolish it - opposed the then Minister of Education, stating that the castle was an archaeological monument.
In 1892 the provincial commission of archaeological assets decreed a partial demolition of the castle but with the preservation of the two towers as Historical monument of the city, and five years later (in 1897 ) the castle was declared a national monument .
In the early 1900s it was used by an artillery brigade. The earthquake of 1908 damaged the oldest rooms but left the two towers unharmed; the damage, even if minimal, of the structure caused a decree law of the Civil Engineers of 1917 to indicate the methods of demolition, but in the same year the castle was spared because it was used as a barracks.

Places to see in ( La Spezia - Italy ) Castello di San Giorgio
The castle San Giorgio is a Genoese military fortification that rises on the heights of the city of La Spezia , (also called colle del Poggio) and can be reached via the Via XXVII Marzo which, today, crosses the old walls placed in ancient times to defend the inhabited.
The original nucleus of the manor, which was rebuilt over the centuries, arose in 1262 by the will of Nicolò Fieschi , who wanted to strengthen its dominion in the area, he expanded the old fort already present on the hill of Poggio. But in 1273 the troops of the Genoese Republic led by Oberto Doria , conquered, destroyed and sacked La Spezia by beating the Fieschi troops . Nicolò Fieschi ceded all his possessions to the Republic.
In 1343 the castle was rebuilt, the year in which the doge Simone Boccanegra elected the Place de Spetia to house the new Podesteria generated from that of Carpena. The construction of the new boundary walls of the village dates back to this period, of which today remains a testimony of about three hundred meters. In the short section you can still see the characteristics of the Ghibelline battlements and the guard walk .
The path of the ancient walls forms a rectangular wall that descended towards the current via Biassa and, following today's via Colombo and passing through via Sapri, it turned towards the church of Saints Giovanni and Agostino going up towards the fort. The walls however caused a big problem for the La Spezia community: completely excluding the building of the church of Santa Maria , which was sacrificed and demolished in 1436 , in order to avoid an easy raid by the Visconti troops , only to be rebuilt subsequently within the defensive perimeter.
Today the castle San Giorgio, after the careful restoration lasted more than a decade, has been returned to the spezzini and to the community in its ancient splendor. Precisely for this reason, the municipal administration of the time has decided to move inside it the civic archaeological collections of the Ubaldo Formentini Museum , first placed in the old and inadequate premises behind the Mazzini Library of Corso Cavour.

Castello Tesino a beautiful village in Trentino Alto Adige| Biolago | North of Italy 2022
I am taking a break from our Pantelleria episodes as we're back in the incredible mountains of Trentino Alto Adige. So this weekend we have visited a surprisingly pretty village just one hour away from Trento City - the Castello Tesino or Casteltesino.
The name of Castello Tesino dates back to Roman times, but there are archaeological remains that testify to the presence of the Reti in a much earlier period. The area was an excellent outpost for the Roman legions who passed on the Via Claudia Augusta , a Roman road that started from Altinum in the direction of Augusta Vindelicum (the current Augusta in Germany ) and that passed through Castello Tesino due to the marshy situation and even to the presence of a lake where the Canale di Brenta is now located . However, when around the year 800 the Canale di Brenta became uncloggedto form the current situation, the viability moved to the more comfortable and direct Valsugana , leaving the Conca del Tesino in an isolation that favored its independent character and rarely subjected to medieval lordships (the dominion of Count Biagio delle Castellare should be remembered).
