Jasper County was formed in 1841. Carthage was chosen as the county seat, the area cleared and the town platted in 1842.[ The city was named after ancient Carthage. By the time of the American Civil War, there were over 500 residents, a brick and stone courthouse, and several businesses.

The area was divided over slavery, and almost all of the African-Americans in the county at the time were slaves. The Battle of Carthage, fought on July 5, 1861, was a clash between Union troops from St. Louis and Confederate troops led by the pro-Southern Missouri Governor Claiborne Fox Jackson. The Second Battle of Carthage occurred in October 1863 when Union troops confronted Confederate troops north of town and forced them to return to Arkansas.

The area grew rapidly following the Civil War. The Missouri Western Railroad arrived in 1872. Town residents started a foundry, furniture factory, woolen and grain mills, a plow works and numerous liveries and other businesses. Leggett & Platt, now a Fortune 500 company still based in Carthage, was founded in 1883. Nearby lead mines and limestone quarries also contributed significant wealth and Carthage became one of the most prosperous towns in the area. Residents poured their money into ornate Victorian-style homes, many of which are now part of the Carthage South District, which was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The Jasper County Courthouse, also on the National Register of Historic Places, was built of Carthage stone in 1894–95.

U.S. Highways 66 and 71 came through town in the 1920s, and for a time the town saw a stream of cross-country traffic. Route 66 intersected with U.S. Route 71 at the present intersection of Central and Garrison Avenue. The original owners of a Boots Court motel at this crossroads promoted a drive-in restaurant with a KDMO AM radio broadcast, Breakfast at the Crossroads of America, named as a reference to the two major highways of the era. Route 66 was eventually re-routed, and then replaced in the 1960s with Interstate 44 running south of town.

▶️ Here is the ultimate Tunis travel guide with things to do in Tunis Downtown
• Souks (bebbhar): The souks of Tunis are a set of stores, shops and workshops located in the medina of Tunis and mostly built from the 13th century.
• El Ali: When you enter to the souks from bebbhar, especially if you’re a morning person, I advise you to have a Tunisian traditional breakfast in El Ali.
• Zaytouna mosque: The Second place that I recommend you to visit on day 1 is the Zaytouna mosque. It presents religious history of the people of Tunisia.
• El Emba: It’s a small historical coffee shop, located under a grape tree. It is well known by its natural grape juice and its tea.
• Torbet El Bey Museum: The Tourbet El Bey museum is a Tunisian mausoleum located southwest of the Tunis medina. It is the last home of the rulers of the Husseinite dynasty.
• Panoramamaisond’orient: It is a coffee located on a rooftop of a Tunisian crafts shop.
• Bardo museum: Bardo museum was a castle of a Tunisian ruler. It was then turned into a museum in 1888.
• El Nasr: As you may have got a bit tired after walking the whole museum, I suggest having a lazy rest of the day in a restaurant or a coffee shop in El Nasr.
• Tour in Sidibou Said: This city represents the pure Tunisian city, with blue doors and white walls. And what’s much better than that is that it has a mesmerizing sea view.
• Café des delices: The Café des Délices or Café de SidiChaabane is a café designed on the terrace and created in the 1960s in SidiBouSaïd in Tunisia. Located at the top of the village, it offers a view of the Gulf of Tunis.
• Safsaf: In that place you can find a well, a noria, a camel, a gigantic tree and a restaurant.
• Dar el marsa or the cliff: It’s a hotel and a spa for you to relax and enjoy a great view. You can also enjoy their tasty delicious meal in a classy restaurant with sea view.
• Carthage Acropolium: Saint Louis Cathedral of Carthage is a former Catholic cathedral located in Carthage. It is named Acropolium as it is a cultural place hosting meetings, exhibitions or concerts.
• Archeological site of Carthage: This site involves the American cemetery which is a military cemetery created in 1960. It groups together on 11 hectares the graves of 2841 American soldiers.
• The baths of Antoninus: The baths used to be huge complex built during roman Carthage. You can also have a great sea and Bougarnin mountain from there.
• Modern theater: It’s a reconstructed amphitheater. The government uses it now to organize big events like Carthage’s festival.
• La perle du lac: It’s an ongoing project, of a very luxurious city on the lac. It’s well built on good basis.
• Dahdah: Now after you relaxed a little, you can get excited and thrilled with some impulsive, entertaining, adrenalin draining games in Dahdah.
• Lac 2 cornice: After a lot of gaming and action, you need to regain some calories. So we thought about taking you to a wonderful place where you can eat and enjoy the view at the same time.
• Tunisia mall: Tunisia Mall is the largest shopping center in Tunisia and one of the largest shopping centers in Africa.
• La goulette (halkelwed): La Goulette is a cosmopolitan Tunisian city that hosts the main port of Tunis.
So, I hope this guide will help you to know the Best places to visit in Tunis Downtown.

Best Guide to the Carthage Archaeological Site

There is a tremendous amount of history in the northeastern Tunisia town of Carthage. If Carthage's most famous general, Hannibal, had been successful against Rome, the world would be extremely different even today. The Roman Empire prevailed in the Punic Wars, however, and now not much remains of the empire of its top rival in the second and third centuries B.C.

There are Punic ruins and there are Roman ruins in Carthage today. Watch this video to see the major sites and learn some history that you never have known.

‘Precious Moments’ In Carthage Missouri’ - Route 66 Quick Vlog From The Road Part 5

Well after a couple of days in bizarre Branson we head back to Route 66 making away along the historic road to Carthage Missouri. We stay for the night at the classic Boots Court Motel. Our room was the Clark Gable room, it was where Clark Gable stayed during the war.

You can now watch the longer Route 66 Vlog :

During the day we stopped at the old gas station at Gay Parita. Really friendly place where they offered us free coffee, water and fresh water melons. This place is definitely worth stopping at.

We then visit one of the oddest places, the Precious Moments Chapel near Carthage. This is the place for you if you want hundreds of little eyes follow you around, image Disney’s ‘It’s A Small World’ but even more sinister.

If that’s not your thing then you must visit Red Oak II , a collection of old buildings and old gas stations which have been brought in and rebuilt. Be careful as some of these old buildings are actually peoples houses.

We end up in the classic Boots Court Motel, tomorrow we head off to Oklahoma our third state. #Route66 #HistoricRoute66

Carthage, IL | Historic City Walking Tour

Carthage is a city and the county seat of Hancock County, Illinois. Carthage is best known for being the site of the 1844 death of Joseph Smith, founder of the Latter Day Saints movement. The first European-Americans settlers arrived in Carthage and Hancock County in the first few decades of the 19th century. By 1833, they had erected simple buildings in Carthage, and the town was platted in 1838.

I've been a big fan of Route 66 ever since I did the whole trip in the fall of 2020. When I did that trip, I was very interested in this stretch of the road, but it was raining and I wasn't able to explore it thoroughly. This time I really took my time and found there were 11 ghost town type places within a short 34 mile stretch. That's pretty incredible if you think about it. They range from towns of around 100 people to hardly anything at all. Also included are some epic Route 66 stops like Spencer and Paris Springs Junction. This video should be interesting for anyone interested in Route 66 or Missouri history!

Red Oak II, Missouri - the ghost town that’s one of the most incredible art projects in the world!

Red Oak II, just outside Carthage, Missouri, is a truly magical place to visit. Artist Lowell Davis took old buildings, restored them, and moved them to his farm to create a living outdoor art museum. I can't do it justice in this description, so you'll have to see the video for yourself. And if you're ever near Carthage, it's a must see just off Route 66!
