Crossing Africa and the Sahara by Truck

This video documents a journey made across Africa and the Sahara Desert in 1959/60. It uses color slides shot during the journey and shows how images from the past can be given a new lease of life. This is not a journey I would care to make today.

01:09:21 Naturschutzzentrum Poda
01:17:48 Das Heiligtum Beglik Tasch
01:19:54 Feuertanz und Yoga
01:22:14 Rituale und Mythen in Balgari am Strandscha-Gebirge
01:24:44 Saline im Atanassow-See bei Burgas
01:27:18 Verabschiedung

Milwaukee Shapes the Universe: Dr. Prasenjit Guptasarma, April 20, 2022

Milwaukee Shapes the Universe is a virtual series focused on space research and technologies being innovated in Milwaukee. UW-Milwaukee researchers will share their latest technologies and ideas around space tech and innovation.

This week’s featured speaker is UW-Milwaukee physics professor Dr. Prasenjit Guptasarma, whose research involves unconventional magnetism and superconductivity, quantum materials, and materials for energy sustainability. Dr. Guptasarma’s team has been working on new technologies in the area of rechargeable batteries. These have applications in everything from cell phones, computers, and electric vehicles to complex components in space travel infrastructure.

Guptasarma aims to replace present-day rechargeable-battery components such as Lithium and Cobalt. These, and other elements in our rechargeable batteries are environmentally unsustainable resources of planet Earth. In many cases, they are based on vulnerable supply chains which end up in human exploitation or geopolitical conflict.

As a Condensed Matter Physicist and a Materials Scientist, Guptasarma seeks to elucidate the fundamental quantum physics behind unusual electronic and magnetic properties of materials. His research group’s work helps predict, discover, and commercialize new materials with wide-ranging applications in advanced electronic devices.
